The Fans Who Make Football: FC St Pauli | Featured Documentary
Since it was established in 1910, FC St Pauli of German football’s second tier has become one of Hamburg’s best-known exports. But it is not their football that has garnered so much attention. It is their unwavering fandom cultivated over decades that has made the club famous around the world.
Proudly anti-establishment, St Pauli supporters are united in empathy, representing the poor and downtrodden - a far cry from violent hooliganism common amongst football "ultras" in other parts of Europe.
Their focus on social issues and political activism is symbolised by the unmistakable pirate skull and crossbones that have become the club's emblem.
They are unapologetically anti-racist, anti-homophobic and anti-fascist. It is these political positions that have given the club international notoriety. St Pauli were the first football club in Germany to ban fascist symbols from their stadium, and have since gained a cult following way beyond the Hamburg city limits.
Beyond the usual football chants and rock music, we follow the "ultras" of FC St Pauli, a beacon of hope in the midst of Europe’s rising far-right movements.

We love both these clubs. If you look at crystal palace ultras at selhurst park there are a lot of Celtic and at pauli flags big catholic and left wing presence within the palace mob there has been for years

I’m a Liverpool fan quite disenchanted with the state of football. St Pauli is an inspiration, this is what football should be about.
I am a Barcelona F.C. fan but if they ever play against St. Pauli, I’ll be supporting St. Pauli.

Im sorry to hear that, i was born in hamburg and truly hate hearing about racism in my city… Its always been a major port city with open doors to all who come, but of course our dark past and some certain individuals nowadays still take part in racism which is sad. Im originally from Mecklenburg, living in Rostock, the home of Hansa Rostock, one of the clubs really hated by St. Pauli's fans, but my great beats for St. Pauli since my time in Hamburg. Originally, I was Hansa fan, but Hansa had and has many problems. Corruption in the past and far-right people under the ultras, as well as the many bad memories of my childhood in Mecklenburg, broke this love for Hansa. St. Pauli (Hamburg) gave me a new home, a new community. I remember how overwhelmed I was when my bank made known that it started a partnership with FC St. Pauli. I knew that my bank would come from Hamburg, but I never noticed that it came St. Pauli earlier. Actually, my bank can't afford to spend enough money into the club because they are too small and too focused on human rights and environment protection over profit, but this is why St. Pauli agreed to a lower price for the partnership. Of course, I was one of the first people who ordered the "Kiezkarte". Who doesn't want to pay with a card in the store and show which club you like at the same time?!

St. Pauli is more a cult than a football team. I share lotsa sympathy with and for St. Pauli. Thanks a lot for this video. If You consider to keep up with this series, I'd recommend You doing a video on the history of 1860 Munich (aka. the Lions). I'm a huge fan of the Lions, especially as they were 2nd league in the 1990's and fought their way up to the 1st league. 1860 Munich is the real counterpart to FC Bayern Munich in German football. 1860 is the working class football club of Munich. Actually they are 1st in 3rd league. It's a strange club with all their background at the Grünwald-Stadium and all their ups and downs. I've been to the Grünwald-Stadium in the 1990's as they were 2nd league and fought their way up to the 1st league. The atmosphere at Grünwald-Stadium was indescribable back in those days. This was not regular German football-fans ... this was more Tifosi-alike. 1860-supporters are some special kinda Tifosi. Well, Munich is not really Germany at all. Munich shares a lot with cities in Nothern Italy. Besides 1860 makes a great story for journalists, due to the corruption issues that happened after they fought their way to the 1st league. Corruption-issues of the management, none regarding the players or trainer or backup-stuff. I guess 1860 Munich might make a great story in series like this. Annotation: Whenever I go to a football-game, I always wear a Sierra-Leone-National-Tricot. Why? Because I love African football on one side and on the other side I love 1860 Munich (the Lions) and that Sierra Leone tricot shows a Lion.

A great documentary and in any case st Pauli is just awesome. But they are by no means the only ones who have such a fan culture. Düsseldorf, Jena, Chemie Leipzig are just as well positioned and, of course, Eintracht Frankfurt. Who don't want any AFDers as members.

I can remember going to watch Man City at Hamburg in a friendly during Kevin Keegans day ..... the Hamburg fans were great, and were hospitable ... but as we drank in a bar the night before the game, a large bunch of masked St Pauli fans turned up 'out of nowhere' looking for trouble ..... a battle ensued before they ran off into the night, and the bar was left in a bit of a mess.
