The Family Literacy Program

The Fairfax County Public Schools’ Family Literacy Program teaches beginning level English to adults and enhances the literacy experiences of their children to foster independence for families. Family Literacy classes are free for residents of Fairfax County. The classes teach English using topics such as health, school, employment, consumerism, and parenting. The program is currently offered at fifteen elementary schools in Fairfax County.
The Family Literacy Program is offered in two semesters (twelve weeks each). The fall semester runs from the end of September until mid-December. The spring semester runs from late January or early February through April. Registration takes place in the fall and winter. However, you may register at any time, provided that there is space in the class. You are encouraged to attend both semesters. Schools may begin to advertise and register participants as early as August during their Open Houses or at Back to School Nights in September.
Classes are held during the daytime and in the evening. Students who attend an evening program are encouraged to bring their children currently enrolled in kindergarten through 6th grade. Those who wish to come to a daytime program are encouraged to bring their children ages three to five who are not currently enrolled in a preschool class. Bringing your children is a very important part of Family Literacy as it fosters strong family ties and builds literacy skills for everyone.
