Not sure if anyone mentioned it before: Shady Sands was a city, founded by survivors that emerged from Vault 15. So in a sense, Hank destroyed a settlement that grew out of Vault-Tec.

This series is a study in how to adapt a game to screen. The casting is nothing short of perfect, and they recreate enough stuff from the games to appease the fanbase, but the key element is tone. That's remarkable, because the tone of the games are grim, tragic, and brutal. And wacky, with sly, sarcastic humor. And getting that mix right was the real miracle of this show

It's also good that they leaned into the fact that the franchise/universe is ripe for anthologies, stories set in the same universe but being mostly separate from each other apart from factions etc. The fact that it's all original characters, and a somewhat new story (besides using the trope of leaving the vault chasing after a missing family member) means it's fresh for fans of the series, and the writers have more creative freedom, the problem with a lot of tv adaptations is when they try to stick to the source material and just straight up adapt the story of it, they rarely do it justice and it just annoys everyone, I think the only exception would be the Last of Us, but they had the fortune of the game being more structured like a show/movie than vice versa already. Plus I just love seeing all the pre-war stuff which outside of Fallout 4 is referential only., and yeah they nailed the wacky humour contrasted with the bleakness really well.

This show is definitely rewatchable, and you'll likely catch a bunch of little things that will have a different meaning on a rewatch, if you didn't notice the 1st time. A few examples, the 'Don't Lose Your Head!" poster that's repeatedly shown in the 1st ep; the shop keeper telling Lucy she didn't belong up there because she was so clean and still had all 10 fingers; Hilzig telling he she'd have to adapt to live on the surface, but if she did, would she still want the same things (rescuing her father); Lucy saying it would break her dad's heart if she sacrificed a whole community to save him

Yeah, it was only when rewatching it with my father that I realised that Cooper says the "We Cowpokes" line to his daughter (kind of gets overshadowed by the thumb bit at the time), which he says to the Outlaws as the Ghoul 219 years later. And equally the foreshadowing of Thadeus' hatred of Ghouls, only to become one. The writing is pretty incredible.

The last altruistic people in the Brotherhood of Steel was Elder Lyons and his daughter Sarah, and they helped bring clean water to the Washington DC wasteland. But after they died, the remaining brotherhood members decided they didn't want to escort water caravans to help wastelanders, and they went back to collecting and hoarding technology. This happened between 2277 - 2287 (20 - 10 years prior to the show). If Maximus is going to try and change the brotherhood from the inside, it's going to be an uphill battle.

If the latter and if VaultTec plans to recolonize the surface in a couple of decades I think a BoS vs VaultTec war is on the horizon

When you have a moment, now that you've seen the full season, search KZread for, 'Every "Okey Dokey" in Fallout'. It's a short that shows the 5 times Lucy uttered this phrase. It shows the range of emotion throughout the show, and is quite simply a tiny sampling of the level of writing and acting in this series, in one silly little phrase. That last 'okey dokey' is so much more impactful and seeing all of them back to back drives that home. I can not wait for the 2nd season!

Some reference about Shady Sands if you're interested. It's a settlement seen in both Fallout 1 and 2. In 1, it's a small village, usually the first place a player encounters after leaving Vault 13. In 2, it has started to grow and prosper and is now the nucleus of the New California Republic. It's not seen in Fallout: New Vegas, but is referenced as the NCR is one of the major factions in the game.

Those Vault suggestions in that meeting did happen as actual Vault tests. In the games you can find the ruins of all of those Vaults. As for the bombs surprisingly Vault Tec did not drop the bomb first. People who have watched the show only wouldn't know this but in the games you see that Vault Tec and its associates were caught completely off guard when the bombs dropped. Many Vaults were still unfinished and some Vault Tec staff did not make it to their Vaults. Shady Sands was a Vault community created by the people from Vault 15. The NCR was essentially a Vault Tec community. Vault Tec's plan to create the best society resulted in the NCR. The NCR was a democracy. They had laws in their society. They had their own economy. They had their own army. They had trains and power stations. The NCR was an actual government and it was successful. Hank destroyed Shady Sands a Vault society home to the government Vault Tec wanted to create. Hank ended up ruining Vault Tec's end goal plan due to his ignorance. In the last shot that is the city of Las Vegas. The famous sign is revealed in an after credits scene. The city was renamed New Vegas and is the only city that avoided being bombed because Mr House CEO of Robco set up a defense system to protect the strip. He was at the meeting with Vault Tec.

  • @Zappina

    @Zappina

    22 күн бұрын

To be fair, nope. It was suggested in the game(fallout 3 i think) that Vault Tek dropped the bomb first, not the chinese. However its a sheer contrast to the Black Isle games, where the Enclave(which was the shadow organisation of the government) was suggested as a culprit. If you think Hank did harm Vault Tek's plan, that is a no. Vault Tek plan was to outlast everyone and built the perfect management so they can alone rebuild the world. That means they need to outlast or destroy any not planned society and Moldaver was not a Vault Tek employee and Vault 15 was not the vault which suppose to rebuild the surface. It wasnt even a control vault like Vault 13. They already had a government and a successful republic without any Vault Tek representative to lead them. Vault 31 was supposed to build the perfect society, thats why the reclamation day was the main purpose of the vault and had no experience going on there. So Hank did everything right based on VaultTek's plan. New Vegas although was part of the plan, still it doesnt supposed to be the city to form a country wide governing system and House did stick to the plan.

I just noticed a little bit of inflection in a speech watching this time that kind of confirms something that first occurred to me watching the scene of Rose greeting Muldaver. Muldaver described Rose as "Kind, loving...curious." The slight pause and the look on her face when she said that kind of makes you think, considering how Muldaver was smiling at Rose and little Lucy in the flashback and when Muldaver activated the cold fusion, plus the way she said, "Rose, we did it" (and keeping Rose alive all those years). Was the "curiosity" that she mentioned partially of the "bi" kind? It would add even more to Hank's motivation (and add more meaning to Muldaver's line "That's how Vault Tec deals with competition").

The 1st episode showed that Cooper Howard was divorced at that time. There was a comment of his needing to work to pay for his "Alimony" obligations. This last episode shows why he was divorced. Talk about irreconcilable differences! I had hoped that this episode would show the fate of Cooper's daughter. But that will obviously be revealed in S02. There is still the question of who actually dropped the bombs. Was it Vault-Tec? Or America's enemies? The fact that Cooper's daughter was not in any Vault before the bombs came reveals 2 things. Either Vault-Tec did not drop the bombs. Or that they did but Cooper's ex-wife did not have any control or foreknowledge of when the bombing would precisely occur. Because she obviously would not allow her daughter to be outside and with Cooper during the bombing. S02 will likely answer the questions regarding Cooper's ex-wife and daughter. (side note: In over 200 years Cooper really hasn't discovered the answer yet? Hopefully S02 will also answer that mystery of why it has taken so long).

_In over 200 years Cooper really hasn't discovered the answer yet?_ The very first episode shows he was captured at least 30 years earlier by someone called Dom Pedro, and spent virtually all that time buried alive, with only brief phases of intermittent torture and mutilation in between (probably to harvest his organs). And if ghouls are routinely imprisoned in some places for the purposes of organ harvest - the Super Duper Mart where Lucy encounters Snip-Snip comes to mind - Cooper may well have been captured and imprisoned in organ farms multiple times over the years. He definitely hasn't been able to spend the whole 200 years roaming for his answer. In any case, though, I'm with you in wanting to see more of what happened to him over those two centuries, as well as who Dom Pedro is :)

Some things to think about. 1. I think Hank was equally upset because Moldaver and Rose were in a relationship. Moldaver wouldn't have kept ghoul Rose around if they didn't have a tighter bond than friendship. Where was Moldaver when Shady Sands was attacked? 2. Did Vault-Tec actually drop the bomb? Would Hank's wife risk her daughter by setting off an apocalypse without her being safe? Their willingness to set off bombs doesn't mean they did. 3. How was Shady Sands destroyed? Nuclear weapons, even in Fallout, explode above a city, not at ground level. To leave a huge crater, the bomb would have to be carried somehow to Shady Sands and secretly because Shady Sands was the capitol of the NCR. They had a large population and soldiers. Where would Hank get a nuclear bomb big enough? I am sure he did something but probably not dropping a bomb. For next season I hope you do one episode per show. There were so many things I wanted to see your reaction to but were skipped.

I don't know anything about Fallout lore, but there is certainly going to be a twist there. I doubt it will be as simple as Hank being outright bad. Hank could very well have known about an unknown faction such as the original US government/military and missing president, potentially foreshadowed in episode one. If Vault-Tec really had been tasked by the government, perhaps those are the individuals who were overlooking the meeting and prompting Barbara. It's possible that Hank really was just trying to get his wife and kids away from a significant emerging power that would challenge the authority of government. Plus, there's no way Barbara would've been happy about nuking everything while her daughter was at a party with Cooper, so it probably wasn't V-T.

While I don't want to say to much and spoil something I think we'll see in season 2, I don't think Thaddeus is turning into a ghoul, but a different type of abomination. I guess we'll find out when season 2 realeases. Also, a Easter egg in the code Hank uses, 101097, 10-10-97 was the release date of the first Fallout game. One more edit, the final shot with Hank looking out at a city, that was New Vegas. As a fan of the games, that was a "oh holy sh$#" moment.

I have major doubts that an injection of anything can cause someone to become a ghoul. There are other mutations with regenerative capability. It would be "boring" to have another ghoul character in the story. I'm sure he's going to be something "new" (to the show). [PLEASE don't say more! If you know, you know -- and no one else needs to know! 😉]

@@michaelhoward142 Frankly, I'm completely on the other side of the fence: the franchise's lore of radiation exposure turning people into ghouls strikes me as the only glaringly unscientific aspect of what is otherwise pretty hard sci-fi. The main plot line of the very first _Fallout_ game includes major elements of biowarfare and genetic manipulation for the purposes of inducing resistance to radiation (also touched on in the show), and the files you find in the Glow in that game contain a lot of material clearly written by a game writer who understood a lot about biology. For that reason, it seems weird that at the same time they'd be happy to attribute ghoulification to nothing more than radiation exposure. In any case, I'd definitely like to see Thaddeus be incorporated into a richer exploration of what turns people into ghouls in future series, and a biochemical explanation (as seen in the show) makes way more sense

I'm going to take a wild guess here and predict that if and when Addie plays Fallout 4, that she will not be eagerly joining the Brotherhood of Steel faction the first time around. The game has 4 factions, so if you play it through 4 times, you can do so by siding with a different faction each time. Each faction has their share of unique and interesting and unexpected side quests. And its those side quests rather than the main quest that makes the game so enjoyable and entertaining and replayable. Now if you'll excuse me, the Glowing Sea awaits.......

Republic was no better than the rest of the factions (if i recal been awhile) this show for the time being made them the "good guys" but that can change which is one thing the game did well was paint images of them then subverting your expectation

4:33 It didn't start as a human, they genetically mixed human DNA with that of "radiation resistant species", such as the gulpers. It's why the gulper in the show has human features instead of "just" being a muscular bipedal newt, like in the games. It's also why the woman in the video was birthing little gulpers. 5:01 While surface dwellers might think the Vaults were a place for rich folks to hide in, the truth is that most of them were actually social experiments. That's why almost all of them that you find in the games are in a fallen state and you have to piece together what happened there, based on environmental clues and through hacking terminals (if your skill is high enough). 7:08 Turns out "The Trap" was for the viewers all along. :D 8:04 Yeah, he'd be devastated... x) 10:13 Remember him when Lucy and Wilzig were leaving Filly? He said he'd sell potions to regrow an entire foot. 27:15 She became a different animal altogether. 34:15 Time for Arcane & Silo, which both get their second season this year too. :) Edit: Still missing The Boys (+ Gen V between season 3 & the soon releasing season 4) too.
