"Is she just going to be driven insane?" 😅 In the story story, the narrator murders a man, hides the body, and is tormented by his guilt when someone comes looking until it drives him mad and he confesses to stop the beating heart he hears. The way it is used here was chilling, with Vic already being insane and peeling back the layers of her self-delusion, set to the whirr-click metronome of Vic's prototype heart.

to answer your question about how Vic knew about Roderick trying to kill himself: I'm pretty sure that Verna was possessing Vic for a moment as she did with the chimp in the episode where Camille was killed. after a few rewatches, I noticed how Vic seemed to snap out of it and call for her dad just after she stabs herself. this confirms, at least for me, that she was being possessed in some way.

I don’t get that Verna was possessing Vic. Verna does not possess, she manipulates. Verna is not an original character in any of Poe’s work. Vic was just out of her mind crazy at that time, just like the story, “The Tell-Tale Heart.” When she stabbed herself, it was like a bucket of cold water being thrown in her face and brought her back to sanity for that last moment of clarity to say, “Daddy?” That Daddy was was a question of what is going on, not a cry for help. I see what you are saying, I just think they were sticking to the original story.

probably my favorite episode of the series and that's largely due to T'Nia Miller's acting as well as the reveal of where the chriping sound is coming from (and how it continues on in the credits) ❤ I was already enjoying this series but this episode solidified it as being my second fave Flanagan show

You are right her name is Verna which is a variation on the word Raven if you look at it closely any way the moment Vic said those things it was Verna talking through her and then after she stabbed herself she wasn't under her control anymore that is how she knew he tried to kill himself. I am glad you both are enjoying this show as much as I did, though I am like you I don't know anything about Poe's work and still enjoyed every moment of this show. Verna more complicaited than one would think, but I won't go into more detail so that you don't have any spoilers. The color orange for Vic represents pride and arrogance.

Roger Corman made a series of films in the 60s that adapted Poe's work. Usually they starred Vincent Price as well as other iconic horror stars like Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre. The scripts were by Richard Matheson, who wrote the novel I Am Legion as well as The Incredible Shrinking Man and The Legend of Hell House. He also wrote scripts for the original Twilight Zone. The movie, The Raven, not only stars Price, Karloff, and Lorre, but also has a young Jack Nicholson is an early role. The Corman Poe films include: The Raven House of Usher Tomb of Ligeia The Masque of the Red Death The Pit and the Pendulum Premature Burial Tales of Terror (an anthology film that adapts the Poe stories Morella, The Black Cat, and The Facts of the Case of M Valdemar. The Black Cat incorporates elements of The Cask of Amontillado) Two more films are considered part of Corman's Poe series. But The Haunted Palace only derives its title from Poe's work. Its plot is based in an H P Lovecraft story. Another film, The Terror, is not based on a Poe story. But was an attempt to squeeze out another film with a limited budget and using the sets created for The Raven. It starred Karloff and Jack Nicholson and was shot over a period of nine months by five directors that included Francis Ford Coppola (Coppola began his career directing Dementia 13 for Corman)

this is one of my favorite episodes of the series! T'Nia Miller is a powerhouse and she totally sells Vic's slow descent into insanity. I highly recommend reading the source material "The Tell-Tale Heart" because it is one of Poe's best works, and this episode sticks pretty close to the original story. this episode, along with the finale, helped me realize that The Fall of the House of Usher is my favorite Flanagan series and I am so excited to watch your reactions to the rest! 😄

She was a control freak and selfish, but the show makes it clear that that sprung of Roderick's mind games between her and her brother messing up her sense of worth and trust.

“The Tell Tale Heart” is definitely a greatPoe short story as well as an excellent episode of this series. The story, much like Vic in this episode, is a great example of the unreliable narrator. As Verna in disguise mentioned in this episode, Vic appears to want to be magnanimous but really wants fame and fortune. Agatha Christie would later use a similar format in The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. New Year’s 1980 happened post Annabel as will become apparent over the next episodes. Verna briefly spoke through Vic IMO when she said ‘you should have jumped’ shortly before her death. KERP AN EYE ON THAT WALL! 😮

Verna is not really a "devil-woman". That would imply that she's pure evil. She's too fair and considerate with the innocents in the story (like the staff at the rave in Perry's episode) and also gives each of the children a chance to make a different choice. A "devil" wouldn't care to do any of that. She's more akin to the Grim Reaper or an angel of death. She can also be seen as an executor of fate or karma, a deliverer of consequences.

That's not a spoiler but: Notice the references to *NONE* of the Ushers being able to sleep since Prospero wake up on episode 2. They are all being denied sleep and each day that has a deeper impact on their mental stability. Prospero died too soon, but those that survived so far are imploding, and Tamerlaine is having full on blackouts.

As someone who is in the business, one of the things I can’t stand is the body’s reaction to one’s own death. For example, people having their throats cut and then they just fall dead. I can tell you from real life growing up on a farm, that that is not real or how how the body reacts. When a person has a gun pointed at someone and another person comes from behind, shoots the would-be killer and they drop the gun and fall down dead… not real! When you get shot, all of your muscles will contract. So when you shoot the would-be killer, the muscles in the hands of said killer, contract and pulls the trigger of the gun they are holding, thereby shooting the first victim if they are in close proximity of each other. ( or missing because their aim wouldn’t be at their very best at some distance.) Their teeth would clinch, total body reaction. All of that to say good for them!!! The Doctor, being hit in the head with a marble figurine, could cause the cranium to crack and puncture the brain that would make the nerve center to go “oh, hell! I’m damaged! How can I repair myself or get help?” The body’s systems would shut down, not all at once. So the Doctor’s/Girlfriends body would be twitching or jumping during system failure. When someone is being choked to death, it takes approximately four minutes of applied pressure to deprive the body of oxygen enough to cause death. Not just counting to ten. In the 1980’s bar scene, it has already established that Rodrick was married to Annabelle Leigh AND had two children. That’s what August was talking about when he said Rodrick should have been spending New Year’s with his family, not out kissing some woman. And he knew how much in love she and he were, therefore, he would not be out for any other reason. Madelyn’s schemings turned Rodrick into doing something he would not have normally done. UNLESS…

❤Verna is.....wait for it.....anagram for Raven. The Tell-Tale Heart is one of Poe's most popular short stories. It has a very unreliable narrator and the reader doubts the sanity of the narrative. Paranoia and preoccupation are palpable to the reader. The Narrator goes mad from hearing something nobody else can hear which is done really well here.....except Roderick can hear it the artificial heart beat. Is he part of the insanity...ummmm yes.

That “daddy” always gets me… to be a child who wants nothing more than the love of her father but that’s never something he gave her but as he admits turned his kids against each other to win his love. Guilt killed Victorine something Roderick says has no purpose. This is as the first child he witnessed die and he seemed to be fond of Victorine for doing something that seemed worthy. A lot of who Roderick used to be is reflected in his children especially the eldest three

Yes they are not great people but they also were raised by to be anything but good people. That’s mostly down to Roderick and how much he screwed up his kids. They become mentally trapped in this cycle and react accordingly which for them is the only ways they know how to express any emotion.
