I think one of the great problems Liz Truss and the Tories in general have is they actually are totally unaware of their own inadequacies. That's why they keep doing silly things with zero shred of self awareness.

The Queen died. I'm not even joking, if she hadn't have died, Truss' premiership would have been even shorter.

There is a root cause for the outcome. The person didn’t fail… the system did. That’s what needs be fixed… not very very funny in light of circumstances in Britain. Most political systems suffer from the same problem.

A straw woman and utter hypocrite. Shoving her previous Lib Dem and Brexit credentials under her bed (horrible image), and becoming a soi disant 'true Conservative'. Any decent person would fuck off UNDER the nearest rock, but not our Liz - she's ON TOP of the nearest rock, i.e. CPAC.

Don't agree with much of this. Burke represented a rotten borough. He had an aristocratic sponsor and wasn't interested in the views of ordinary voters. Most MPs these days are clueless middle managers and out of their depth. The MSM isn't much better. Truss was trying to adopt Reagan's economic policies. Truss, Reagan, and Thatcher were fans of Hayek. Reagan achieved average economic growth between 1983 and 1989 of 4.4%, by cutting taxes, increasing borrowing, and government spending. He also cured inflation and unemployment. The top tax rate fell from 70% to 28%. Truss wanted to adopt his growth policies. Economically illiterate commentators in The Times claimed what Truss was doing had never been tried before. The US is still applying Reaganomics. The Tories have returned to the Butskellism of Heath and Wilson, and policies that failed in the 1970s: big government and low growth. Rather than follow the US, Cameron adopted EU austerity policies and wrecked the UK economy. The debt-to-GDP ratio went from 50% to 90% under Osborne. The US marches on with stellar growth and the EU has flatlined. The EU is fucked.

It crazy to me that any UK PM can think that they think they can be like the US, the differences are staggering, and to long to list.

This is a great podcast. Often very amusing, informative and stimulating but sometimes even Tom and Dominic get it slightly wrong. While l agree that Liz Truss was too much ambition and not enough sense, she did handle the Queen's funeral and her own exit with commendable dignity (unlike Johnson). The Tories used to be the party of law and order and high standards in public life. If they choose Johnson again, that reputation is lost for ever and wipeout at the next election will be fully deserved. Johnson's supporters appear to care only for power at any price. Probity is nowhere (like the U S Republicans).
