The Failed Kaiju Movie | Nezura

Today I look into the story of the failed production of the now Canceled Daiei film Giant Horde Beast Nezura (1964). Looking into it's rocky start to its evolution to a certain Giant Turtle. I also briefly cover the biopic Nezura 1964 (2020) which chronicles the events of the disastrous production.

I could see this movie being a real hit nowadays. Change the script a bit to have it be a mutated rat, that escaped and started to change in appearance, later to take over a large nest of rats. The humans of the story are mostly told that everything is fine, or are concerned that not killing the rat could expose some operation, or something of the like. A few days later and the nest of rats, has accidentally been boxed up, and shipped out too Japan. A week goes by and the ship finally, after having no communication to the mainland or other scours, does arrive and is anchored into the harbor. It is left until the proper authorities can be called out to look it over, and the rats, which are now about the size of dogs, escape the ship and go into the mountains and forests, hiding out. A couple of weird stuff happening, people saying that there are monsters in the mountains. And finally a team is put together to investigate/deal with the problem. The team does find the nest of the large rat, now to the size that is on par with Food of the Gods, and it is shown that the new generation is always bigger then the last, with many killing and eating the previous generation. The team decides to blow up the nest and the rats, and use TNT, or what have you, to end the problems. Sadly, this wakes up Nezura and the now Kaiju sized mutated rat, marches the rats towards the towns and villages near the the base of the mountain, with a city being the next thing in its way. The military can't get involved right away, and the villages and towns are abandoned as people flee. The city is then taken over with the rats destroying plenty, and Nezura going on a full rampage. Finally a plan of attack is decided upon to attack during the night well Nezura is asleep, and once the military lures the rats towards the edge of the city, along with the subway tunnels, they attack the rats on the city limits and gas the subway system, and leave out poison for the ones not daring to leave the edges of the city. Nezura wakes that morning to see that the whole nest has been wiped out, and the military start the assault on the Kaiju, attacking it with everything. Then Nezura, having been blasted and mortally injured dies as it was making it's way back to the harbor. The film ends with a note that "Humans make monster, because sometimes we are ourselves, monsters. The End. I think this could be a great way for everything to go in my opinion.

It's funny that the plot of Nezura actually has a lot of potential. As for Mammoth Nezura, I see her as female as a nod to naked mole rats (which are eusocial mammals who are ruled by a queen).

It's crazy they went to all that trouble to make a giant Nezura and not show it off than the "blink and you miss it" in the movie. It's a really cool design and honestly feels like something that would have been designed by the company back in the day. (Well, maybe not as detailed in the scales and skin of the monster), but the basic jest would probably be there. Anyway, I can't imagine how terrible the production process could have been in the flick. At least they were able to realize their problems and abandoned ship before it sank the company. Sort of like how Sound of Thunder tanked Franchise Pictures when that was made.

The film adaptation of Food of the Gods might have come afterwards, but I'd be surprised if Nezura wasn't inspired by that part of the original novel. A scientific growth-causing superfood, accidentally fed to the local rat population and creating a dangerous swarm of giant rats? Some coincidence. Also, yeah, big shocker that catching a bunch of wild rats and enclosing them in your workplace didn't work out. 🤮

The "ra" at the end of kaiju names does actually mean something, it roughly translates to "monster" (also the case for Hedorah). Gojira does not get his name from this convention, his name was made by combining the words for gorilla (gorira) and whale (kujira)

This is the same premise of another MST3K movie. The Beginning of the End was shown during the Mike Era. Radiation used to enlarge crops inadvertently enlarges hordes of locusts. Hence the title implying Armageddon. Actual locusts trampled obvious models. Superimposed locusts were used for close up shots so they appear giant. For the time it was movie magic, but by the 90s it was pretty lame. They really should have consulted a zoologist before trying. More animals commit cannibalism than is comfortably thought about, as if even one is comfortable. Rodents need a lot of care if you want to avoid problems. Urine in large amounts allowed to fester creates a toxic smell. They also didn't need that many. They only needed enough to move around a portion at a time. Having much less would have kept the place be cleaner. After shooting is done for the day sanitize the set. Which would easily cut down on the health problems. Recycling footage and stock footage would greatly reduce the time needed for animals. Also the wild mice was insanely stupid. There's just too much stupid to unpack with that plan.

Using live rats to make a kaiju movie?! That was foolish, egregious, and too much of a health risk. Daiei must've had to pay a hefty fine for unsafe and unsanitary working conditions, when Nezura was in production in 1963. Small wonder they went bankrupt in 1971.
