Yes, especially considering that was right about the same time that Israel was reborn in a day, just like Isaiah's rhetorical question! Who hath heard such a thing? who hath seen such things? Shall the earth be made to bring forth in one day? or shall a nation be born at once? for as soon as Zion travailed, she brought forth her children. Isaiah 66:8

I was reading about the scrolls the other day, and must say, wondered about how much truth is in the story of discovery and the how, whys, where's and what's. This interview is in good timing as such and I'm ready to listen. One of my 'silly' thoughts while reading was the boys' chance finding with the clay pots hidden below and breaking/ cracking. The term 'crackpot' came to me. I pray not too many crackpots have been released into the world to impart historical facts that the world can trust. Our Lord is a task master and sure doesn't make the discovery of Truth easy. Being reminded to believe nothing and question everything is the best advice ever.

After I became passionate about Apologetics and evangelism a few years ago, there's been an interesting juxtaposition that takes place. Learning about God's Word and His Truth objectively forces you to accept the findings even if there's an underlying fear that what you study and find will conflict with traditional beliefs we form. What I've learned so far, is there's so much more to learn! To let God's Truth reveal itself and not think we have to force it to. Truth is truth and it will show itself, time and time again. God never disappoints! We just need to be open to accept those revelations and know there will always be tough questions!

You can find it on some academic sites I have seen, but I don't remember where. It is usually just a repeat of what we already know or have but with some additions about "sons of light" and a battle or the location of temple treasures using landmarks akin to "turn left at the McDonalds" which mean nothing without their original context. That sort of thing. Try Google Scholar and look for the citations at the end and that might give you the link, or just go searching online. Unfortunately, google searches aren't what they used to be but universities have online pictures of the scrolls (the ones pieced together) and the great Isiah scroll has a display in Israel (can't remember if it is a copy or the original) in a museum for the public. They used to be more proprietary but have loosened up alot since they realized their mistake of allowing politics to win out over academia. Now they have it all split with partner universities who help them out with translation. I know someone whose father worked on translating some of the scrolls and Isaiah was a little bit different, but that only interests a few people. Read what you have in the bible, and then compare with the Hebrew, Greek, Aramaic, Arabic writings with biblical scrolls and you'll see if the differences are interesting and meaningful to you -- or not.

@Frank Beans The Dead Sea Scrolls were found mostly in clay jars inside caves along the Dead Sea near the ancient Essene community of Qumran. These jars are known as “keneesas,” (sp.?)which were used to store Scriptures that were no longer in use. I.e., many were much older than the time of Jesus; up to about 200 years BC, some later, right up to the time of the Roman siege, beginning in AD 68. That’s the date they were likely abandoned, not to be discovered again until the 1940s. Some believe there may be some New Testament fragments among them, although this is doubtful given the early date. But speculation abounds on this issue.

Hello Sean, great show! Thank you. You look a lot like your dad used to 😊 back in the day. A city bus driver was reading his book in 1975 in Albuquerque, and he as well as the book led me to the Lord, way back then. You remind me of myself when I was a younger preppy prof, t-shirt, and sports jacket, nice. I finally met your dad in 1988 in a Julian, CA camp he was holding then. I was in good shape then, a marathon runner, and I remember he was competitive like me. He did not like coming in behind me in his 5 or 10 k race then, the apple pie that day tasted a bit better. I praise the Lord, and thank Him, for bringing him (I think it was Dottie) and yourself into all of our lives. God bless you, young man. Rooting for any apologetic.

Those were on papyri as we have found. This is largely the product of Hellenism, as you may know, and the Greek language was prevalent, even amongst the Jews, in the first century.

You know, it's perfectly possible to be a Christian and not read every story or passage in the Bible as literal. Choosing between seeing things from the perspective of those who wrote it versus how it fits into what we understand today are two different things but not necessarily mutually exclusive as long as you can see the difference between the two and keep track of it. Both perspectives either are or were as dynamic as the people holding the perspective in their time.

The comment Dr Evans made several times about how the Kumran community sometimes translated the name of God using a Paleo-Hebrew script points to something. It points to mankind's tendency to resist changing an ancient sacred form. You can find this in every religious denomination and also in the oldest of religious communities. The implication though is what is so interesting. Preserving the use of an ancient script for the writing of God's name, the most sacred of all things, points toward the fact that there were scripts with that name being written during the time when Paleo-Hebrew was the normal way of writing.

In the 1960s, I saw the Dead Sea Scrolls in Manchester, UK. I went to see them as a class visit as a school boy. The Dead Sea Scrolls which we saw were special as they were written on metal which was rolled up. At the time we saw them they were discussing how they could unroll the metal rolls without them being damaged. They showed pictures of very fine circular saws which they suggested they could use to cut open the scrolls in order to read them. Does anyone know what was written on the metal scrolls and if it is displayed on the Web?

@@liljade53, why don’t you look in the KJV Bible, the preserved word of God, YHVH, the only true living God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the only translation taken from the authentic Masoretic texts and the Textus Recepticus? In a world that devotes itself to hating and mocking the Lord Jesus Christ (only Him, not the false gods of pagan religions, which itself speaks VOLUMES), why would you expect to be able to “Google” the truth? God’s word is the only truth in this world that’s ruled by the usurper, Satan, and his minions. Jesus tells us until He returns, Satan is the god of this age, who usurped dominion over the earth when he deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden. Scripture tells us over 500 people at once we’re eyewitnesses to the risen Christ, and at the time Paul wrote those scriptures, the majority of the 500+ people who saw the resurrected Christ with their own eyes, all at once, were still alive to contradict Paul’s writings if they had not actually seen the risen Christ, but NONE OF THEM DID. The reason the Bible has been proven to be the true Holy Spirit inspired word of God is because it’s an accurate account of human history, and is confirmed by archaeological findings. Do you know that prior to 1950 or so, there were reports in newspapers around the world of archaeologists discovering the bones of giants, confirming the Bible’s account of Genesis 6 and the race of giant Nephilim who were created when fallen angels mated with human women in an attempt to corrupt all mankind’s D N A to prevent the Word, Jesus Christ, from becoming a flesh man to be the Kinsman Redeemer for mankind. But in the 1950’s is when they began teaching the lies of evolution, and the bones of the giants were removed from museums, and covered up, because they don’t want humanity to know we have a Creator, Jesus Christ, who loves us. Our God and Creator loves us so much that He came down to us and became incarnate in the flesh body of Jesus Christ, to pay the death penalty our sins had earned us with His own life, because Jesus knew He could raise Himself up again the 3rd day. The fact that the Bible prophecies written in the scriptures thousands of years ago are coming true today proves our God and Savior, Jesus Christ, is alive and sitting on the throne of Heaven, orchestrating the end times events. Why can’t Jesus just come back now? Because God, unlike mankind, is not a liar, and since He has given us the end of the world from the beginning of the world written in the scriptures, the scriptures must be fulfilled exactly as written, because if they are not fulfilled exactly as the Holy Spirit gave them to man to be written, then that would make God a liar, and Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, can’t lie because He has no sin in Him. That’s why Jesus says the scriptures must be fulfilled in order for Him to return. The Bible is 1/3 prophecy, and over 2,000 prophecies have been fulfilled exactly as written. Jesus told us about artificial intelligence thousands of years ago, when He told John in the last days life would be given to the image of the beast, so the beast could speak. Jesus told us in Revelati0n that all the nations would be deceived by a pharmaceutical, which is the death jab for the C0VID lie. So if you want the truth, read the KJV Bible. It’s the proven preserved word of God, given to man by His Holy Spirit, as evidenced by the 100% accurate fulfillment of the prophecies within it. Do you know Psalm 22 is a prophecy of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ? And it was written about 500 years BEFORE Christ came, and before crucifixion ever existed. The coming of the Messiah, the Savior of mankind, all who believe in Jesus Christ, was the fulfillment of over 300 prophecies written in the Old Testament scriptures? That’s why Jesus was so harsh towards the religious leaders of Isr@el who should have immediately recognized Jesus as their PROPHESIED Messiah, but they didn’t, because they didn’t know the scriptures that they should have known because the scriptures were only given to Isr@el at first. After Isr@el rejected their Messiah and His kingdom, Jesus commanded the gospel go to the other nations of the world, to the Gentiles, and praise Jesus for His mercy and grace upon us who believe on His finished work on the cross and His resurrection the 3rd day for eternal life.

Would really appreciate if you would point me to the source of this nonbiblical fragment 4Q521, which is dated to 30 years prior to the birth of J. . @@thevulture5750 There's really quite a few sticking points for me, but to name some of the biggest: 1)Generational Sin: The idea that everyone is born damned to hell because of something their ancestors did. 2) Infinite Punishment for finite crime: The idea that someone deserves to burn in hell forever because of a finite amount of sin. 3) Logical inconsistencies in the nature of God: For instance, if God is all powerful can he create a rock too heavy for him to lift? If God is perfect and self sustaining, why would he create humans for a relationship? That would indicate that God was somehow lacking in his nature. 4)The Christian notion of a New Covenant: This one really bothers me because it implies that morality is subjective. God commanded one thing of the Ancient Israelite and then commanded something completely different from the Gentiles. It's ironic because Christians point to the Bible as a source of objective morality yet it's clearly subjective. A)To add to that point, interpretation of the Bible is subjective. You talk to 1,000 different Christians and you will get 1,000 different interpretations of what the scriptures mean. 5)The idea that the only stipulation for salvation is believing in Jesus and the Resurrection (accepting Jesus into your heart). This leads to situations where someone who has lived an evil life can accept Jesus as their Savior on their death bed and be rewarded eternally: Whereas someone could live a very moral life, but not believe in Jesus or believe in the wrong God, and be eternally punished. Such a system negates morality.

As older I get I've become less Religious and more Spiritual. I've also come to the reality that no one with real truth to himself actually knows who God is or ever was. And why should he be so secret to only a few...And the few say that they we're the chosen people (they say) but somehow God didn't tell the rest of the world to right it down... That's puzzling... I'll just sit and wait on God to tell me himself if things are that important to him... I've also realized that God doesn't stop anything from happening (like a child walking into traffic or being eaten by a beast..storm deaths..desease...ect...) I believe he gives us life and that's it...we make up all the rest

Hi, God told us what is important to him in the Bible and how to right the world (altough it's not that important because our goal is the eternal life, not this one), but people don't want to read it.

If God ended all suffering, he'd have to end your life and mine as well because we're all sinners. Instead, he's patient and longsuffering, giving ALL a chance to turn to him while we live. Also, people seem all too quick to blame God for injustices, and never give him credit for all the good that happens in the world.

You took the words right out of my mouth I don't think God does much intervening at all I've been thinking about that a lot recently as I'm aging I've been thinking about a lot of things pertaining to God. You seems to be very hard to find. I do think though, he will give us hints on what we should do to accomplish our goal or give us the opportunity. Perhaps inspire us to get our asses moving and try to accomplish what we're trying to do. What do you think?

Dr. Sean, why were some of the manuscripts written in Greek? (That would move the timeline forward considerably). And sheepskin, not papyrus? They appear to be Templar scrolls. And do ANY of the Hebrew manuscripts contain lettering resembling the Moabite Stone? .

From the Lexham Bible Dictionary Sampler pg. 187: “1QIsaᵃ preserves a text type that, while close to the traditional Hebrew (Masoretic) text, also contains over two dozen readings where it agrees with the early Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible (the Septuagint, or LXX) rather than the MT [Masoretic Text]. Some would assign 1QIsaᵃ to a text type distinct from those of both the MT and the LXX (Ulrich and Flint, Qumran).” “Although the biblical scrolls from Qumran generally retain a more ancient form of Hebrew than that which was actually spoken in that day, some claim that the scribe of 1QIsaᵃ [the so-called Great Isaiah Scroll] clarified the text of Isaiah for an audience that no longer understood some classical Hebrew forms, updating and including more popular terms for a contemporary audience (Parry and Qimron, New Edition).” (in the same source. pg. 187.) Parry and Qimron undoubtedly were guardedly referring to Dr. Solomon Zeitlin who likely “threw the baby out with the bathwater.” Professor Zeitlin got to read some of the evidence from Qumran in the years it was being discovered (1948-1956) because there are only 10-12 rather-well to quite-well preserved scrolls and many of these were published in the beginning but there’s about 900 manuscripts from Qumran and almost all of them consists of tiny, brittle fragments which were extremely slowly edited over four decades by an exclusive four-man team before they were published in 1991. And virtually no one else had access neither to the scrolls nor even to photographs of the text until they were published. (An article from February 12, 1956 in the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (est. 1917)) Prof. Zeitlin Disputes Value of Dead Sea Scrolls for Judaism The Dead Sea Scrolls “have no value for Judaism or the history of early Christianity” Dr. Solomon Zeitlin, professor of Rabbinic Literature at Dropsie College, said last night at a lecture here. He asserted that the scrolls are not of great antiquity, but were written in the Middle Ages by “none too literate writers and hence have no value for Judaism or early Christianity.” Dr. Zeitlin based his argument on his study of “the internal evidence” in the scrolls. He pointed out that the spelling of various Hebrew words and terms which occur in the scrolls did not come into usage among the Jews until the Middle Ages. He also indicated that the scrolls contained references to Jewish laws which were not in vogue during the pre-Christian period but were enacted centuries later. “If one assigned to Shakespeare the authorship of a newly-found manuscript wherein there were words like Fabian, ‘telephone’, ‘automobile’, ‘New Deal’, and reference was made to laws which were enacted in the Victorian age, would any student of English literature regard the manuscript as that of Shakespeare?,” Prof. Zeitlin asked. “Similar reasoning applies to the Dead Sea Scrolls,” he said. Prof. Zeitlin also disputed the importance of the famous “so-called Manual of Discipline” of the Essene sect, and the Commentary on Habakkuk and the Zadokite Fragments in which the expression “Teacher of Righteousness” is held to be significant for anticipating the ministry of Jesus. “Detailed study of these scrolls show that they were written in the Middle Ages by uneducated Jews who either belonged to one of the Karaitic sects or were influenced by one of them”, he claimed. (source: www.jta.org/1956/02/22/archive/prof-zeitlin-disputes-value-of-dead-sea-scrolls-forjudaism) The Habakkuk Commentary (1QpHab) is carbon-14 dated as late as AD 122. It and the Community Rule (1QS) which is carbon-14 dated as late as 2 AD were found rolled together as one, packed the same way in which the Great Isaiah scroll (1QIsaᵃ) was packed. Initially upon discovery, they appeared to be two black wax or tar covered cylinders. Being sealed so kept them extremely well-preserved. The Great Isaiah scroll was first carbon dated as late as 1 AD but the scholars date it to 160-200 BC. i figure the scribes had some old skins to use and faked the old lettering for the "Great" Isaiah Scroll (1QIsaᵃ) and then later time-capsuled it for the very purpose it's serving twodaze whirled because a comparison of the most quoted by the writers of the New Testament book, that is NT verses of Isiah (alone) to the Masoretic Text vs. the Septuagint will show how the current Hebrew text is scrubbed of Messianic verses.

Messianic rebel Jews fighting the Empire of Rome described the Messiah as a military leader. The Roman Emperors (who built the Coliseum) created a peaceful messiah named Jesus who advised the rebels to “turn the other cheek” and “give unto Caesar what is Caesars”. The 100 years of war finally ended. - Joseph Atwill
