Richmond B.C. is located within greater Vancouver. British Columbia and the greater north west is a hotbed of hydroelectric power generation, with their large number of rivers with dams. Ebco is one of many highly talented engineering companies, with trades people of a very high quality. It shows in the video, the pride of fabrication.

This a very nice video and it really shows the steps in building the spiral casing. A unit of that size (output) cost millions of $. Francis turbines are very good when flow is constantly above 60% of the design maximum flow. Great job ebco on showing how it's made.

Nice job I appreciate all the work as a machinist myself, but I want to know what happens to the turbine when the fixed deflecting blades are worn by erosion from tons of water passing through them every minute, the water is full of impurities like particles of sand suspended in the water which erode the fixed blades!!! As for the movable blades it is no problem as they can be removed and changed but the fixed blades are part of the turbine itself?

One problem, this was the housing, to make it a turbine you still need a rotor, bearings and a PTO shaft; none of which was shown in this video. This is the volute assembly where the rotor is housed.

There are graphics that explain the range of use of a francis turbine in function of two things: how many m^3/s flow inside the turbine and how high is the geodetic drop. And these two factors must be evalutated in function of the power of the implant. In common words a francis in particular may need from 0.5 to 25-30 m^3/s always depends by the dimensions of the turbine

Well, like many engines like the steam turbines used in thermal plants these are regulated or governed because they need to maintain a fairly constant speed to meet the voltage and frequency requirements (60 Hz in this case) for electrical distribution. When the load becomes heavier, more water is used to maintain speed. Your gas lawnmower demonstrates this cutting through a thick patch of grass, the engine becomes a bit louder because it burns more fuel to compensate.

It was obvious that the Blue Man Group could not survive on showacts and needed a second job (1:52). Joking aside, if never seen a lathe (1:35) and a measuring gauge that big. That whole turbine is very similar to a diesel turbocharger's turbine side, which also has variable guide vanes instead of a wastegate valve for a broad operational range and a good efficiency with a broadest ranges of volume flows.
