The Express Train Between Europe's Closest Capitals - ÖBB CityShuttle Bratislava to Vienna Review

Hello, and welcome back to another train trip report on my channel.
In this video I will be travelling on-board a ÖBB 2016 diesel locomotive + CityShuttle coaches from Bratislava hl.st. to Wien Hbf.
This Regional Express train runs between Europe's two closest capital cities, taking around an hour to link Bratislava to Vienna and back, running at frequent intervals throughout the day.
The consist features both ZSSK (Slovak Railways) and ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways) carriages, offering a decent choice in pleasant accommodation for this key regional route.
Enjoy the video. :)

That 30 years after the fall of the iron curtain the line is still single track and not electrified is embarrassing really. However, this shame will not persist much longer. By next year it should be finally electric and by 2025 fully double track. The ÖBB is promising a reduction of travel time to 40 min for the fastest trains once the upgrade is complete, presumably with some extended Railjet, let's hope they keep their word.

Some years ago it was older ÖBB coaches or Slovak coaches from the Communist days with original interior. Or a combination of the Slovak's old coaches and maybe one reasonably comfortable ÖBB coach which had been downgraded from long-distance services (but even that coach didn't have air-con). My first travel here was exactly 20 years ago in one of these old Communist-time-built coaches, complete with old-style passport check (this was before Slovakia became member of EU) during a prolonged stop in Marchegg border station (so I have the Devínska Nová Ves border stamp in one of my old passports, I just have to find it somewhere :) And before Slovakia joined the EU, there were IIRC only three train pairs each day from Bratislava hl.st. to Vienna... Now there are many trains each day and they are very much standardised: ÖBB locomotive, one or two ZSSK coaches (well modernised, with air-con, new toilets etc) and then ÖBB Cityshuttle coaches (reasonably modern but the lack of air-con stings in the summer). I would always prefer the ZSSK coaches, in the summer because of the air-con, and regardless of season it gives me a "finally, back in dear Slovakia" feel already in Vienna =)

I commute daily with this train. The austrian coaches have better seats, but I cannot sit next to the windows. There is a huge "step" running along the whole sides and either I have to put my leg up on it, which is not very comfortable, or I have to touch the calf of my leg on the edge, which quickly gets uncomfortable. The reliability of the service is rather poor. Trains get delayed very often and due to the single track layout, any delayed train makes other trains delayed too, as they can pass each other only in some stations. Also, and this annoys me the most, trains get cancelled almost on a regulr basis for all sorts of reasons, without any alternative other than to wait at least one hour for the next train, which is then super crowded. Also, the doors on the austrian wagons break down very often. The toilets in the austrian cars are of the "hole into the track" type, with water sensors in the sink often not working, so you cannot wash your hands, even when there is water in the tank (you can flush the toilet by stepping on a lever). And even if the sensors in the sink work, it takes ages for water to actually come and usually the stream is very weak, sometimes only a few drops of water.

@@SuperalbsTravels Today was my last ride for a long time. The bridge over the Morava river and the adjacent viaduct are being closed for major reconstruction until the end of the year. There is no bus replacement as there is no road bridge anywhere close. I will have to drive 25 km back to Bratislava and then to Wolfsthal in Austria to take the REX7 train instead of the REX8. I am not happy about it, but what can I do. Finally the last 3 kilometers will be electrified so I expect to commute with modern electric units at the end of this year.

I mean it's only 5 minutes from city center (Presidential Palace) by several bus lines so I wouldn't say it's "quite a distance" but it can surprise you if you are unprepared, that's for sure. You could take bus 80, 93 or 94 to get to Palace (combined they can go anywhere between every 1.5 minutes to every 4 minutes), or 91/191 to get under the castle/UFO bridge on city side, or take bus 99 for 4 stop and then tram to anywhere within center. Plus 93 connects main station and Petrzalka station within 10 minutes drive and goes as often as every 4 minutes.

Thank you, Superalbs! So, although I subscribed to your channel for two years, this may be the first comment I post here, but I may have posted comments on other videos a long time ago, take a good look. So, first, let's get to know each other. I'm a fan of trains, all trains, especially fast trains or trains that stop at every station. But it's a long story to tell you. My favorite trains are the very high-speed, double-decker, compartmentless trains. If not, are you English? So, regarding your video, it is in the standards of trip reports. Only, I find your video much too nervous for me. This may be the first video I watch on your channel. For trains, of course, we always prefer the cheapest. Money comes first. The fact that the train costs less than the other outweighs any other criteria. Thanks to you.

I hate that the City Shuttles are phasing out, being replaced by Desiro MLs. Desiro MLs are uglier, less comfortably designed (in the current ÖBB scheme at least) and much more packed (which is probably the main reason for the change). The City Shuttles, as well as the usual ÖBB-IC coaches, are the best ones the ÖBB has to offer - comfortable, a lot of space, fast enough.

I wouldn't call it disgusting. It kind of a monument over its time, and this is the way they built during these years. There are some services like ticket office (of course), luggage storing, guarded toilets, restaurants, souvenir shop, a pair of other shops, City Public Transport ticket office, and the station has easy access to trams, trolleybuses and buses. OK, it feels outdated but as long as it doesn't get too crowded, it does the job. My only complaint is the shabby exterior areas with lots of strange people you probably don't want to interact with... Keep away from this station during night hours, and always keep an eye on your luggages and belongings.
