How To Understand The Exposure Triangle | Explained For Beginners
Hey guys,
This is my explanation of the exposure triangle. I tried to simply things as much as possible by using the analogy of the eye to explain things.
As someone that was more focussed on video I didn’t have a true understanding of how aperture, shutter speed, and ISO affected an image until I started shooting more photos.
Hopefully this helps someone understand a little more.

I’ve watched about 20-30 videos to try to understand camera/photography basics as I’m just getting into it, and this video explained things miles better than any of the others. Thank you so much

Aperture affects Depth of Field. I'm sure you know that by now.
The eye analogy, real time examples explaining what setting work best situationally. 10/10, I’m excited and feel confident to go and purchase a camera and try things out referencing this video.
I've spent 6 months trying to get my head around the aperture/shutter/exposure principals - explained simply and beautiful in 10 mins !! thank you !
I've watched a lot of videos lately regarding the exposure triangle. Had a hard time understanding smaller number bigger openings etc. The way you broke it down into fractions really helped me understand why smaller ment bigger and bigger ment smaller. Thank you
Amazing! Thank you! 🙏🏻
Loved the eye analogy, fantastic description. This is exactly how I’m going to explain it to people that don’t understand what I’m doing from now on. Thank you.

As a Communication major who concentrated on TV/Film production, you explained this better than any of my professors. For years I struggled to grasp a down-to-earth concept on how to memorize these basic components. You did an amazing job in 14 minutes. I'm trying to alter my couple channel to have a more cinematic look similar to yours. Thanks for the guidance. #619journey - Sandrea

😊😊 thanks a lot for your kind words. It means a lot, because sometimes you think you're making sense, but it doesn't always resonate with an audience. So knowing that even one person found it helpful is a big deal. Good luck with your channel.
After watching multiple videos and reading tons of articles, all i needed was finding this video sooner. Thank you so much!!

Thanks for saying that, it means a lot. I tried to explain as best as I understand it. However you never know if other people will see it the same way. So glad to hear the video resonated with you 🙏🏽
Transitioning from a career in law to documentary filmmaking and of course taking the self-teaching approach. After so many attempts of trying to understand this, your video is the only one that has made sense for my way of learning. You had analogies and visual examples, properly timed. I took notes! Thanks so much for this and shout out to a fellow Jamaican (based on your accent, hopefully im not wrong :) )

Thanks broo for this great job. I want to know more further about aperture in term of delpth of field; to have a very blury background again your subject, will the value number increase or decrease? For shutter speed in term of movement, if you want to have a clear image on motion, will the shutter value increase or decrease?
@CreativeTechLab
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. That's a tricky question to answer. Like I said in the video, aperture and shutter speed are expressed as fractions so bigger and smaller can seem counterintuitive. Like F2 is bigger than F4, because it's F/2 and F/4. All that said. When you're in your camera: smaller F stop numbers give you blurrier back grounds (1.4, 2, 2.8 etc). And for shutter 'larger' numbers for capturing motion: 1/250, 1/1000 etc.
ありがとう👍👍👍

This is awesome content! I am trying to figure out how to set up a multi cam recording where 3 cameras and lights are constantly relocated from scene to scene. How to match exposure, iso and white balance on the cameras? Would be awesome if you could make a video about that!

Hi thanks for watching. I don’t have a specific video for exactly what you’re talking about. However with the principles from this video on exposure and this one on custom white balance: kzread.info/dash/bejne/n4mg0KptZNfdp6Q.html It should point you in the right direction. What type of cameras are you using?

@@CreativeTechLab Hey man, thank the reply, highly appreciated! I will either rent 3x a7iii or a7c - each camera with the 24-105 f4 lens and the same B&W vario nd filter. I am trying to get it right from the start before trashing out money for the rental, unfortunately I won't have xs time to experiment ahead. Video settings will be 4k 24/50, HLG2, iso set 100.
Thanks for the video dude. This all made total sense. Just bought my first camera (T8i) can't wait to put this to use with all my interests.

Awesome and good luck.
Little correction: iso does not change your exposure. The amount of light hitting the sensor stays the same but the sensor signal (including the noise) gets boosted. Increasing the iso has basically the same effect on your image as brightening it up afterwards in photoshop. The only ways to control the amount of actual light hitting the sensor (and thus change the exposure) are aperture and shutter speed.
@CreativeTechLab

Thanks for the clarification. For real world use it's still part of the equation.
Do you do 1 on 1 classes by any chance?
@CreativeTechLab
Жыл бұрын
I don't. But I'm sure there's someone out there that does.
ISO is how sensitive your sensor Shutter speed concerns speed Aperture is a hole which can be adjusted for lights to create image
@CreativeTechLab

Thanks for your write up
A very important thing to realize is that in fact....No, ISO is not part of exposure. Shutter Speed and Aperture brighten your photo by physically capturing more light. Which is the amount of light falling on your sensor. ISO doesn't do that; instead, it essentially increases or decreases the sensitivity of your cameras sensor. So, don't consider it to be a component of the actual exposure.

No one can explain it because it is impossible, hand held meters and exposure disc's, were...... not triangular. And exposure is computed from light and iso so we now have a weird triangle 😩
