The Explosive Genius of Cai Guo-Qiang | Brilliant Ideas Ep. 30
Gun powder is Cai Guo Qiang's calling card, as the artist behind the fireworks displays of the Beijing Olympics, having also won the coveted Golden Lion award at the Venice Biennale, Cai Guo-Qiang stands today as a bona-fide rock-start in the world of arts. From his "Explosion of Ants" to his gun powder drawings, to his monumental installations, his art is unique, and one seen it's never forgotten.

He uses the very things invented by his Chinese forefathers - paper and gunpowder! A brilliant artist who has never lost touch with his roots. I love it that his entire interview was done in Mandarin.
Taping into his heritage with the usage of gunpowder to create the explosions is very eye-opening! This shows how you can intertwine your roots into art.
True art... IS AN EXPLOSION!
Love this! such brilliance and joy. thank you
Thank you for this. I have till now been skeptical of installations as Art. But Cai's works have not only changed my mind but also gained a new perspective on the Artist's dialogue with his environment.

Amazing work! Reminds me of my own paintings with lightning (up to 30.000 volts).

Would be very nice to have a 20 year chart of de DJIA powdered picture! Each day of trading is an explosion. Thanks for the upload Bloomberg
You have to see this work in person. The beauty of it was that I appreciated it as art even before I knew how it was made. So it succeeds as a traditional artwork as well as a conceptual piece. Absolutely brilliant.
His artwork is very impressive

Nij Jin, the point is whether or not there is theft involved. The nationality does not matter.

Kinda annoying to hear westerners pronouncing Chinese name wrongly. His last name is pronounced "Chai" (as in "chase"), not "Sai".

Chai as in Chi-Com? This is the same guy who thought there was “art” in the explosion of 9/11…throw him out of the United States!
Does he use the reall stuffed animals? Then he's no further from destructive nature chinese bring to the whole world

I was wondering about that as well, looked it up and found: animal replica, fake wolves. I did not find more information yet. On the other hand, a lot of people sadly use all kinds of animal parts... so even if the fur is actual animal fur, why should we be criticising that an not criticise the usage of animal based paint brushes, leather as a working material etc... I'd never buy art that contains animal products :)
A true original, he has so many copy cats who cannot even touch him. Looking at one particularly mediocre artist in Oklahoma named “Jay Sage” who flat out stole his explosion drawing technique and uses it for bible verse art…
Fireworks, GREAT! 90% of everything else, boring to me.
Sai Guoqiang ???? Ahahahaha
too much narrative and not enough art

Like his art works, so much dislike the explosion "artwork". 哗众取宠。
One would think the dude could learn English during his decades dealing in America . Also wonder who first financed his stuff; something of a spoiled child here I think.

Give me a break. Art is never pollution. Do you use toilet paper? Do you use a computer/phone to write these comments? Guess what, you're a polluter.
Can someone here justify the air pollution & environment degradation created by such nuisance experiments ?? N further more if tomorrow this so called contemporary artist experiments with bomb explosives or radioactive substances or animal parts or something, will we so called humans blindly appreciate this Foolishness ???
that´s art? that´s a genius? What a Rubbish!

I think these paintings are great and instead of saying rubbish so easily for someone elses life work, it might be better if you think twice. Meditation doesn't seem to work so much on you..
