The Exorcist: Believer
Only in Theaters October 13
Exactly 50 years ago this fall, the most terrifying horror film in history landed on screens, shocking audiences around the world. Now, on Friday, October 13, a new chapter begins. From Blumhouse and director David Gordon Green, who shattered the status quo with their resurrection of the Halloween franchise, comes The Exorcist: Believer.
Since the death of his pregnant wife in a Haitian earthquake 12 years ago, Victor Fielding (Tony winner and Oscar® nominee Leslie Odom, Jr.; One Night in Miami, Hamilton) has raised their daughter, Angela (Lidya Jewett, Good Girls) on his own.
But when Angela and her friend Katherine (newcomer Olivia Marcum), disappear in the woods, only to return three days later with no memory of what happened to them, it unleashes a chain of events that will force Victor to confront the nadir of evil and, in his terror and desperation, seek out the only person alive who has witnessed anything like it before: Chris MacNeil.
For the first time since the 1973 film, Oscar® winner Ellen Burstyn reprises her iconic role as Chris MacNeil, an actress who has been forever altered by what happened to her daughter Regan five decades before.
The film also stars Emmy winner Ann Dowd (The Handmaid’s Tale, Hereditary) as Victor and Angela’s neighbor, and Grammy winner Jennifer Nettles (Harriet, The Righteous Gemstones) and two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz (Fosse/Verdon, Bloodline) as the parents of Katherine, Angela’s friend.
When The Exorcist, based on the best-selling book by William Peter Blatty, was released, it changed the culture forever, obliterating box office records and earning 10 Academy Award® nominations, becoming the first horror film ever nominated for Best Picture.
The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green from a screenplay by Peter Sattler (Camp X-Ray) and David Gordon Green, from a story by Scott Teems (Halloween Kills), Danny McBride (Halloween trilogy) and David Gordon Green, based on characters created by William Peter Blatty.
The film is produced by Jason Blum for Blumhouse and by David Robinson and James G. Robinson for Morgan Creek Entertainment.
The executive producers are Danny McBride, David Gordon Green, Stephanie Allain, Ryan Turek and Atilla Yücer. Universal Pictures presents a Blumhouse/Morgan Creek Entertainment production in association with Rough House Pictures.

@@Zone0utI watched on Halloween last year. I’m 16 and love scary movies. That movie messed me up. On top of that I’m Catholic so everything in the movie is very real to me. There’s something different about that movie. I genuinely couldn’t look at the girls face. And this is probably coincidence but my house lights started flickering at one part, and when I woke my dad up to tell him it stopped and didn’t happen again. I literally asked him “should we be watching this??” Im so glad my little brother fell asleep almost immediately because if he had watched it could have serious hurt him.

The scene where Sharon brings Father Karras into Regan's bedroom to examine the bumps on her abdomen was terrifying. I kept thinking that Regan/Demon was going to wake up, break her straps, and kill both of them. I'm not that brave. I'm not walking into any dark room where there's a demon-possessed person. Father Karras should have told Sharon to wait until the following afternoon when there's plenty of daylight. 😆

Lifelong horror fan here. I watched The original Exorcist in 1975 when I was in my early teens and I still consider it one of the scariest films ever, if not the scariest. What made it so powerful IMO was the slow buildup with a gradual incursion of evil into very real, gritty lives of people who seemed absolutely credible. The tension was rising, the setting and characters were 100% believable, so that by the time the pea soup was flying, you were all in. The problem with a lot of Hollywood horror now is that they don't take the time to build up that tension or develop the characters, and just go overboard with over-the-top, all-out explosions of supernatural phenonema in your face 15 minutes in, so that you're just numb to it.

My whole family loves all horror films, so I've seen a ton since a young age. Tbh, most of the Asian horror films have a kind of subtle but mind invading creepy dread inducing factor to them that most American ones lack. I became somewhat desensitized to scary movies, but there's only one that legit gave me a nightmare when I went to bed that night, which is very abnormal for me as I never have nightmares. It's a Japanese film called Kairo, one scene in particular caused my nightmare. The channel Spikima Movies even made a video essay about that one scene, it's called Kairo Anatomy of the Scariest Scene Ever.

Just got back from seeing it and I’ll give it a thumbs up. Disturbing modern horror and does it’s best to stay true to the original with some Easter eggs like Doctor Sleep did with The Shining. Like Smile earlier this year and several others, I love to see the nexus points between mental illness and spiritual warfare. This film did a good job throwing it all in the pot, because it always is all in the pot with humanity. The Dark in me loves this stuff. The Light in me is still dumbfounded how all of us, actors included, especially those children, how we willingly expose ourselves and offer ourselves up to The Demon in the ways we do. That is the number one theme of the movie, and why I feel it ended the way it did.

One of the reasons why The Exorcist worked for me was that it was based on much older times. The tone of the film felt different and you could feel the evil lurking in the shadows even though the film didn't show anything. It just gave out an eerie feeling all by itself. It's worth noting that when The Exorcist was released, it was the first time the public had ever seen anything like it and therefore had such an impact on people. Similar to Star Wars, at the time it was the first of its kind and so it was extremely successful. This new film right away has that modern take which removes a layer of horror already. You don't get the same feeling of horror when the girl walks into the church as you do when Regan walks into the living room and urinates herself. Not saying this film will suck, I'm simply making observations and opinions. Still I am very excited for this to come out and I hope its a good one!

Couldn't have said it better myself. in The Exorcist, the cameras were static most of the time as if you were frozen in fear with them and the visuals were grainy that added a lot to the creepy documentary snuff film vibe and then shaky cam when there is some tense shit happening. Spot on "the modern take". (Saw it, '74, as a very scared teen). This is Suburbiaxist, too many characters I could count, diluting the storyline, the scenes the girl walking down the aisle is the new M3gan dance, now spoiled and soiled. Not a slightest reference, (except the dog fight), that I could notice, about the significance of the original excavation scene and desolate Northern Iraq's sinister feel. The now cliche Regan's original horrendous makeup times 2. I say critics will zero in on the script and the new gen of viewers will enjoy it. Not that there's anything wrong with it, it's just about timing and era of having tasted the original recipe.

The original came out at a time when nobody saw anything like it. There was suspense and desent from being a normal person to a depraved, possessed monster was gradual. We went on a journey with the mother through the doctor's tests and theories about what the trouble with the child was. The book was stunning in that respect. So, as the interviews with Blatty states, the film had a sort of documentary feel about it. So, considering all of that along with all of the movies depicting demonic possession, I have my doubts about this being very scary. Unless the director has done something we haven't seen before in this movie.

The original Exorcist is my all time favourite movie (competing for top spot with Die Hard). What made the Exorcist awesome wasn't just the movie but the era in which it was released. The 70's was a whole lot different than the world we live in today. Back then there were no mobile phones or internet. If a home had a colour TV that was a luxury. Many people still had no electricity etc etc etc. What happened to Regan in the movie was considered a real and present danger, it was believed that could happen to anyone. Just as people got scared that the sun might not come up, thousands of years ago, in the 1970's people were truly scared about possession. The Exorcist was almost considered a documentary. I didn't think much of any of the Exorcist sequels but quite liked season 1 of the tv reboot (apart from the last episode of season 1). I hope they've done justice to the original movie.

Sin separates us from God and the wages of sin is death if youre found guilty with one sin on judgment day you will not enter the kingdom of heaven so the thing is We us humans broken Gods law and jesus paid the fine! Unfortunately it won't be as good as the original because it doesn't have the element of surprise. People went to the original and had no idea what they were about to see and it scared the crap out of them. Now people are desensitized due to everything that has came after. Exorcist and movies like Alien and John Carpenter's The Thing and Halloween etc... blazed the trail that everyone has since copied. The trailer give me a vibe that it's going to be just another copy that's trying too hard to equal or better the original. I'll see it and try to temper my expectations.

I was surprised by two things in the ending, which made me sad, happy and curious. It was interesting to see Ann Dowd (Aunt Lydia in "The Handmaid's Tale) take on such a different character. I really enjoyed her character. Ellen Burstyn....I loved seeing her take part, 🙂 but wanted to see more of her in the movie, but she's ninety years old, (doesn't look that old) and I'm thankful that she chose to appear at all. 🙂

It's so bad, Pazuzu issued a statement saying that he was not associated to the production of this film in any way, shape, or form. There's nothing in this movie that resembles the dread, the opressive atmosphere of the original, which is the greatest horror movie ever made; the performances are flat and the plot is pretty unimaginative. It's as if Disney had decided to have a go at exorcism films. Save yourself the time and disappointment and don't watch this, go watch the original film from 1973 or the excellent sequel The Exorcist 3.

I agree. There will never be another. A lot of newer horror movies seem to be action movies with jump scares with no build up leading up to them. There's No definitive story line. And even if there is one, they veer off course. Additionally, in many cases, they have too many actors with basically no pertinent purpose. They're simply there to be killed off in gruesome terrifying manner. Horror movies back then kept it simple, less actors, less commercialized production, no veering off from the original plot, and the jump scares made sense because there was suspense build up leading to them.

With the exception of “it’s burning” vs “it’s hurting”. Also the flashing scenes at the end of this trailer references a banned trailer from the original 70s version. In this film, there's a notable trend where Christian characters are portrayed in a negative light as well as any other movies out there. The priest, depicted as a coward, is killed while praying, while the pastor serves only as a peripheral character. Additionally, a church-going father makes a selfish decision, and his daughter, who is also portrayed as a devout Christian, meets a tragic end. This portrayal is consistent with a pattern observed in many Netflix series, where Christian figures are either depicted as weak or are prematurely removed from the storyline. Interestingly, the film also features a black female character practicing some voodoo like stuff who is portrayed positively and as a cool person, adding a contrasting depiction of religious practices. This choice, along with the incomplete prayer of another father who, despite not finishing his prayer, manages to save his daughter, underscores a recurring theme in the narrative's treatment of Christian characters. So this movie is telling you that it's not God who saves you, but yourself.

One thing I’ll give this trailer alone is the overall aesthetic that The Exorcist films always have. From what I see so far, it isn’t relying a whole lot on jump scares but rather the horror of demon possession. That’s what made the first Exorcist film so haunting, and exceptionally horrifying. This movie won’t top the 1973 classic but I appreciate how close it’s trying to replicate the vibe from the first film.

It just isn't the same without the genius of William Peter Blatty. Exorcist 1 and 3 are absolute masterpieces that simply cannot be surpassed by the modern style of directing and movie making. It was what Blatty DIDN'T show on screen - by arriving late and cutting early that was so damned scary. Watch them again with this in mind and you'll see what I mean. With all that being said, this did send a bit of a chill up my spine, especially when Chris McNeil showed up on screen. I'll be checking it out for sure. The way they only played a small part of the tubular bells theme from the original interspersed between cuts until the black and white flashes towards the end was very well done btw. But people just don't get that the original movie is not really about possession, it's about the loss of faith. That faith being chipped away at bit by bit, by small but constant evils, and the re-discovery of that FAITH when confronted by a terrible and nearly overwhelming evil.

I agree except the fact that Blatty didn’t show much in the first film because he didn’t direct it. Much like Stephen King, he gets almost all the praise for the adaption when in fact he was just the narrative storyteller. Exorcist 3 was great, but it paled in comparison to when he had a director willing to challenge his script pacing and certain themes he had in place. Similar to George Lucas. He’s not a great director in my mind, but his imagination is amazing when he collabs with strong directors and great screenwriters. Friedkin and Blatty apart were so so, but together were a match made in heaven. One catholic, one atheist.

Even in 90s there wasn't anything like it and it did the same thing to my childhood 😆

2:10 I love how Chris says “we’ve met before”, her playing a major role in this film is one of the only reasons I’m holding out hope that it’ll be good. Plus, Leslie Odom Jr. is a fantastic actor, so I’m sure he and Ellen Burstyn will be the highlights. But I think it would be more impactful if Regan and Chris were helping Leslie’s character together, and Regan should have delivered the “we’ve met before” line to Pazuzu instead of her mom. It’d be more effective because REGAN was the one who suffered the most at his hands. I wanna see her get revenge on Pazuzu.

Linda Blair said she had nightmares and wasn't the same after doing the Exorcist films. It would have been nice if she was the Grandmother...plot twist! LoL..but I loved Ellen Burstyn as Regan's mom too.

That's an interesting point, but Regan never really met Pazuzu like Chris did. Chris experienced the horror from the outside. Regan claimed to have no memories of the events.
