    13:50 that area of Merdeka 118 is called Merdeka Precinct due to the historical significance..there's Stadium Merdeka, where first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman shouted "Merdeka" 7 times in the morning of August 31st 1957. That's why the building shape also made into the silhouette of Tunku raising his hand during the historical event. Tun Razak Exchange (TRX) got its name from the major road its situated on which is next to the intersection of Jalan Tun Razak. The mall is called "The Exchange" 26:18 it's a marketing war actually as Apple's first official store in Malaysia will be opened at The Exchange

    The word Merdeka is probably fine as a name. I think in the video I commented that it just strikes me as a bit generic now. It's used so often for so many things. It sort of dilutes the impact of the name when you see it everywhere. I think even that neighborhood uses it multiple times. I think it's the name of the district and the stadium and the MRT station and probably a bunch of other things. I can't shake the feeling that this incredible structure would be better served by a unique name. And I have wondered about the 118 part. Is it really necessary? It doesn't add anything of value to the name and just makes it more difficult to say. Even using the simple word "tower" would be better I think. The Merdeka Tower has a nice ring to it. 👍

    As I wrote in a different comment, I grew up at a time when all my friends in high school were quoting Monty Python left and right. We used the phrase "run away" all the time as a joke because of that scene. I've watched a few KZread videos about this mall, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only one so obsessed with the name of the place. 😅 And with signs. But I guess that is a common occurrence on Planet Doug.

    I think that is a common experience for Europe and North America. Shopping malls were popular when I was growing up. But in recent decades in Canada, they have fallen out of favor. It seems to start with the shopping mall in the downtown core. In my hometown, the shopping mall that was down town closed almost completely. A lot of the store space was rented out as office space. The shopping mall outside of town stayed open, but its glory days were over. It is quite different here in Malaysia. Shopping mall culture is going strong. 🙂

    I suppose that depends on the time of day. 🙂 I never use the lifts, because I enjoy riding up the escalators and taking the time to look around and record video. But I've often noticed quite a big crowd of people leaving an arriving train and racing towards the elevators. They all want to be the very first in line, because a large line can sometimes develop during rush hours. So taking the lift might actually take longer and be less comfortable because you wait in that line and then have to get into a very crowded elevator.

    Here's a trick to figure out what level you are at a mall. Other than looking at either ends of the escalator (typically both ends would have indication which level you are on), you can also look at shop signage. On the main signage of each shop should have 4 main info : 1. Name of the shop, types of business (i.e.: restaurant, cosmetic shop, etc), lot no., and the company that owns the business. The lot no is usually on the right corner of the shop signage. So from the lot no., it should give you an idea which level you are on. C indicates concourse level, G means ground floor, L1 means level 1, L2 is Level 2 and so on....

  • @PlanetDoug

    @PlanetDoug

    Thanks for the detailed trick. I think in the back of my mind, I knew this was possible. I would see something like an address above the entrance to stores from time to time. To be fair, I'm not actually confused by the LRT and MRT system in KL. I've ridden on it so much, I feel like I could get anywhere in the city blindfolded and hopping on one foot. And I talk all the time about how much I admire the maps and other information systems they use. I think they're very clear, particularly since the introduction of the new digital displays in the MRT trains and LRT trains. I don't quite remember the exact points I was talking about in this video, but I often just look around and talk about the systems I see around me and little details that could be confusing for people and could be improved. In KL, the biggest one is the way the various lines are named after terminal stations is not very logical. I don't think I've seen it done that way anywhere else in the world. But I know how it works, I don't actually get confused. I just seem to be always pointing out that it could be confusing for newcomers. 😀

    Those signages are actually correct and make sense bcuz both are kajang line, the top one (platform1) is heading towards kajang I(last station) and the bottom one (platform2)is heading towards kwasa Damanasara(last Station)

  • @PlanetDoug

    @PlanetDoug

    2 ай бұрын

    That's true. But my issue with the overall naming system remains. If you tell a stranger to get on the Kajang line, he will go down to that platform and get on the train that says "Kajang." But maybe he wanted to go in the other direction to Kwasa Damansara. It isn't logical to name a subway line after the last station in one direction. What about the trains going in the other direction towards Kwasa Damansara? They're also part of the Kajang line. Yet, they don't go to Kajang. That's so confusing. And there are so many other instances in the KL system where the line was named after the last station. But then the line was extended. And then it was no longer the last station anymore. Now the line is named after just one random stop in the middle. That happened to the Sri Petaling line for example. The Sri Petaling line used to end at Sri Petaling. But now the last station is Putra Heights. I think it would be more logical just to have an overall name for the whole line without basing it on one of the terminal stations. Just call it the Red Line or something. You can base the line names on colors or on things that are special to Malaysia. But to name each line after one end station in one direction leads to confusion. 😁

  • @drttkwan

    @drttkwan

    @@PlanetDoug The MRT lines are named after the LAST station of the line. The last station of Kajang (KG) Line is Kajang town and tha last station of Putrajaya Line is Putrajaya City. People will hear more about Merdeka 118 when it opens to the public end of 2024 or early 2025.

  • @PlanetDoug

    @PlanetDoug

    Ай бұрын

    @drttkwan What I noticed is that the lines are NOT actually named after the terminal station. Not if you think about it. 🙂 It would be more accurate to say that they are named after only ONE of the terminal stations. And each line has TWO terminal stations, one on each end. 😁 And that's where the logic breaks down. The Kajang MRT line ends at the Kajang Station at one end and at the Kwasa Damansara Station at the other end. So, choosing to name the line after just one of the terminal stations does not convey any useful or accurate information. The other issue is that terminal stations often change as the MRT and LRT lines get extended. I believe that happened with the Sri Petaling line. At one point, Sri Petaling was one of the two terminal stations. But then the line was extended and now Putra Heights is actually the terminal station in that direction. And now the name conveys even less information. You might think the train you are getting on is going to stop at Sri Petaling Station. After all, the train says Sri Petaling right on it. But it doesn't. It now ends at Putra Heights Station. And in the other direction, that same train ends at Sentul Timur Station. Therefore, the name Sri Petaling conveys no accurate or useful information at all. And it's the same for all of the LRT and MRT lines. Oddly enough, now that I think about it, The Monorail is unique in that it doesn't have this problem. It's just called the Monorail, and that works much better as a name. It's not named after one of the stations along the monorail line. It's neutral and that works much better as a name. 😃

  • @PlanetDoug

    @PlanetDoug

    Ай бұрын

    Absolutely I agree with you. I've been to Bangkok a number of times in my life, and it struck me as similar to most large cities in the world. There are roads with lots of traffic and then there are sidewalks where people walk. I found that in Bangkok I could pick any two points no matter how far apart and I could always just walk from A to B. It may not always be the easiest thing in the world. But there was always a place to walk. That isn't necessarily true of Kuala Lumpur. Start walking in your neighborhood in one direction, and you often run into a barrier. Normally it's a major highway system that is in your way and there is no way to get across it on foot. I ran into those barriers all the time when I was cycling. And the same thing happens when walking. I've often wondered how this happened. I don't think I've ever seen a city quite like it in this way. It's like it jumped forward in time all of a sudden to a world with tons of highways. And the transitionary period when there should have been secondary roads and sidewalks just never happened.

    So regarding your comment on the TRX Samsung Galaxy station naming rights. Apple has its own store in The Exchange TRX and made a deal that no other phone brands could advertise. Samsung found a loophole because the station has no connections with the mall, so if people use the MRT, they have to essentially pass through Samsung before getting to Apple 😂. Also, don't know why, but initially the MRT Station name & announcement used to be "TRX Samsung Galaxy" which is shorter and simple. Don't know why they changed it though..

    That's related to something I think I was talking about in the video. When I see something that to me doesn't make a lot of sense, such as not clearly showing the number of the floor you're on, I wonder if it is a mistake or an oversight or if this was done on purpose with a deliberate plan in mind. There's the obvious idea that they don't want customers to know exactly where they are because they're more likely to wander around looking and therefore come across more and more stores. And they will likely end up making impulse purchases and spending more money. If they make it too easy for people to show up, get their shopping done, and go home, they might be losing out on a lot of profit. 😀 So perhaps they decided to deliberately not have signs clearly showing floor numbers. But I don't really know.

  • @zarith87

    2 ай бұрын

    Yes, it does feel like they design the malls that way on purpose. And it makes sense. They want people to walk around more so they see more stores and then end up spending more money. I know that malls often have escalators that are far apart so that you MUST walk by a bunch of stores to get to the next escalator going up or down. It's smart to do that. But if they go too far, it can become annoying. At the very least, I'd like to know what floor I'm on. And it always makes me laugh at shopping malls when this can be so difficult. I never know what floor I'm on. 🙂

    Based on that visit, I wouldn't put it on my list of favorite places to go, either. I like the shopping malls here for the food courts. You can get some really good food in a convenient and easygoing setting with lots of seating. I like that. And some malls will have a local DIY hardware store or a camping store with some travel gear. The Megamall at Mid Valley isn't bad. It even has camera and computer stores. But a place like The Exchange seems to be all about the luxury fashion brands: designer clothing, watches, handbags, makeup, etc. And it's not like I ever wake up in the morning and think that TODAY is finally the day I get a Rolex. 🙂 I take your point about how you can't tell if it's day or night inside shopping malls. Of course, that's probably done deliberately just like at casinos. It's probably a purposeful design choice to get people to stay longer and spend more money. (Or maybe it's cheaper to build that way?) But I do wonder why shopping malls make it so difficult to just know what floor you are on. I wonder if that is also a deliberate choice or just poor design. On the one hand, it benefits them to keep their customers somewhat lost. We end up wandering around aimlessly like sheep, and we might stumble across other stores and end up buying more stuff. But it also makes it more difficult for customers to zero in on the one store where they really WANT to make a purchase. So, doesn't that hurt them financially? I was definitely a bit more lost and disoriented than I'd like when I was at this mall. 😀

    I'm assuming you didn't actually listen to what I said in the video, because your explanation has nothing to do with what I said. 🤪 I understand perfectly well that the X in TRX comes from the word Exchange. It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. As for your second point, the mall is not actually called "TRX Mall." In fact, TRX Mall would probably be a better name. It's more logical. BUT the actual name is "The Exchange TRX" or "Plaza The Exchange TRX" or even "The Exchange TRX - The Lifestyle Quarter." The point is that nobody knows what the real name is. And the official names are confusing and repetitive. So everybody ends up using their own version of the names because no one can agree on what the real names are. Chaos and confusion ensues. 😁

    The "KG" in green color at the MRT station, it means you are ON the KAJANG LINE...that is why both Kwasa Damansara and Kajang shows the same "KG" symbol...meantime, Kwasa Damansara and Kajang are both the END stations for the KAJANG LINE.... If you don't understand, i will draw for you..hahahaha.. To be honest, it is CONFUSING for me as well in the BENINGIN, BENIGGGIN, BEGIIINNING....they should have name the Line like LINE A, LINE B, LINE 1, or LINE WHATEVER....instead of taking the same name of one of its station..haha

  • @PlanetDoug

    @PlanetDoug

    Ай бұрын

    Yes, I'm perfectly aware of what the KG in green color stands for. 🙂 And I'm perfectly aware that the trains going to Kwasa Damansara AND the trains going to Kajang are both part of the same Kajang MRT Line. I said that in the video multiple times, I'm pretty sure. 🙂 I was just pointing out that calling this the Kajang Line doesn't make much sense. It's illlogical to name an entire MRT line after the terminal station in only one direction. It doesn't confuse me. I understand it perfectly. So you do not need to draw me a picture. 😂 My point was that it's not a very good naming system, and it confuses newcomers to Kuala Lumpur.

    yeah, couldnt agree more with you - in general, the name branding of the attractions could use some serious fine tuning. maybe they were a little stingy in getting some fancy PR firms from getting these stuff sorted out. That aside, the Merdeka 118 tower got its name bcoz its architechtural design was modelled after the body posture of the first Prime Minister, Tunku, as he shouted out the "Merdeka" proclamations back in '57 - the main building structure as his body while the top telecommunication extension (?) mimicking his held-up hand.

    I think that's why I thought about this issue of naming so much. TRX and Merdeka 118 aren't the first times I've had the feeling that the names could be better. It's just been a general feeling in the background as I've spent time in Kuala Lumpur. And I've started to wonder if this is actually true and then why this happens. I wondered, for example, if it happens because the English name is more of an afterthought. Maybe the names in Malay are more logical and more memorable. And in the planning and design and construction phases, everybody just uses the Malay name. And then nobody really worries about what the place is being called in English. I've seen that pattern in quite a few countries where they use both English and their own local language. A business will have a big sign in English that makes no sense at all. And I'll look at that sign and wonder how in the world that could have happened. But when you talk to local people, they tell you they don't even use the English sign. They are looking at the Thai sign or the one in Chinese. And that one is the actual name of the place. The English name is there just to look English and give the business some panache. They're not actually worried about what the words are because nobody pays attention to them. It's enough that they just look English. And I have wondered if there was a little bit of that going on in Malaysia sometimes. But of course I also end up feeling like a voice in the wilderness. I've been confused about the Tun Razak Exchange development and what to call things for a long time. But nobody seemed to know what I was talking about and they were happy to just use TRX and Exchange interchangeably and use different names for everything all the time. So maybe I was crazy and the names were perfectly fine? 😎 I actually didn't know about the origins of the shape and architecture of Merdeka 118. I hadn't heard that story until just recently. So, of course, the name fits. But I can't shake the feeling that it's not quite right. I think the neighborhood or district is called Merdeka. And the Merdeka Stadium is right there. The MRT station is called Merdeka. There are probably a lot more right there. And I was told that Tun Razak Exchange was given that name originally because it is actually on the street called Tun Razak. So, the naming just feels a little bit on the lazy side, perhaps at the expense of clarity and memorability. 🙂

Firstly I would like to say that my dad brought me up to never take sides and I would like to emphasise that each of us are unique in our ways and in how we see life unfolding in front of our little eyes . We must all remember that each of us are just tiny cogs in this great big wheel of life which we tend to appreciate the present 🎁 and we also look forward to the future . I'm really pressed for time but I can see Douglas point of view of what he is expressing .. as he has said that he has been doing what he has been doing for many years . In that many years some of us could be in school , working , or hymm ? Maybe doing something monotomus day in and day out . Where else there is someone who's left his country and come to a different part of the world to experience life and not only experience it but to share it ! I like planet Doug . It's fantastic ,it's like nothing else , I, have so much more about life in general . So Alwi I understand totally where you are coming from .. sometimes it's frustrating of what you are expecting and what you expected never turned up .. all I can sum up is .. we are blessed , and we are very lucky to watch life going past us . The only reason I'm penning this down is your damm good comment ...so I leave it at this . If you don't like the former there is always the latter .. apologies for no punctuation ❗ . where did u get that data from..? Malaysia debt to gdp ratio is just mearly 70% far lower than average in the world, .. global average is at 100% and higher that includes singapore, united states, japan is at 250%.. 95% of malaysia debt is in ringgit, either internal or external debt it does not matter because the bond issued are in ringgit not in USD and only bank negara can issue the ringgit.. as long as debt are in ringgit, the government, in theory can payback the debt by just issuing more ringgit by just lowering the rates, according to Malaysia Central Bank Act 2009, BNM allowed to issue its own bond not more then the total of Foreign Reserved (about 104billion USD) that will put on the max limit of money of being printed.. Malaysia and the rest of the word adopt Fiat currency not gold standard any more... as for major foreign reserved currency like the USD they can in theory print as much money as they want as long Inflation is undercontrol, for MYR the limit shall be Inflation + Total Foreign Reserved.. meaning in order for Malaysia to print money they needed to export more in order to obtain USD as a reserved this will allow BNM issue more bonds sell them to banks, and used that money to buys Government issue bond from the government inturn allows them to pay out national dept to investors internal and external, majority of government bond owned by Malaysian anyways.(Thats why national debt in MYR crucial)
