Phoibos' first GMT! Yay! And it's quartz! Oh, erm...
I know that will polarise opinion, so I'm looking forward to the comments section on this one. For the price, a Ronda quartz is a no-brainer, and if you are OK with that, there is an awful lot to like about this Eagle Ray GMT. It looks pretty sensational for a watch at $180, and wears very nicely indeed. Quality looks spot on, plenty of lume, sapphire etc etc. If you are in the market for a no nonsense travel watch, this should definitely be on your list. Cheers, Jody

Same. I bought a Citizen CB0160-51L Eco-Drive radio-controlled world timer used in perfect condition for $80. Tell ya what...nothing like being able to grab and go and KNOW that the thing is dead-on accurate. Even across daylight savings time changes. I stayed up last time just to watch it. It's just so easy. I still love the mechanical watches n my collection but I have nothing against quartz at all now. Now, to find a way to get a Grand Seiko 9F movement based model :)

Its always great to have the option of spending $200 or less for a well machined, well assembled, accurate, functional, beautiful, and stylish timepiece. Buying an automatic at that price generally means major tradeoffs. Quartz is reliable, offers more functionality at a lower price and is less of a hassle. Sure you lose some of the soul and heritage you get with mechanical watches, but even that argument grows tiresome. And lets be real, heritage/craftsmanship is a selling point of mechanical watches entirely made up by dying luxury watch brands during the Quartz Crisis. Snobs need to get over themselves, pointless complexity might be beautiful, but its also exceedingly stupid, lets not pretend otherwise. This is coming from someone with many Autos and manual wound watches, and I absolutely love them, but I admit I bought/continue to buy into the bullshit a little. Just wish more people in the community would be aware of that fact too.

My quartz's are always there on my dresser and can always be trusted to be worn. No fighting for open spots on the winder. No winding or adjusting the time. What do those "no-quartz people say when they see a smart watch like the Samsung Active 2? I think they will pass out. Try making a phone call or answering a text off your automatic. I really like watches especially automatics, but I also think if you really want to be a true collector of watches you have to include quartz movements ( they are after all watches as well). Quartz has been around for quite awhile now and I am sure it will maintain a large share in the watch industry for decades to come. This Eagle Ray GMT is a gorgeous well made watch and that to me is the key to why we collect them. I will eventually invest in a GMT and this baby seems to be the right pick. Keep them videos coming and if you get a chance, check the Bernhardt Corsair, it's beautiful.

In the years since I bought a few quartz pieces: a 6.87mm thick Seiko Kinetic, a Casio Duro, a Casio AQ-S800W solar ana/digi, a solar radio controlled G-Shock, a Citizen ProMaster Eco Drive, a Citizen Eco Drive Aviator. After that I turned to the dark side and converted to mechanical watches but still spent some dough on a Seiko SKA785 Kinetic just a few weeks ago. So to spend $200 on this piece the minimum requirement would be solar. I’m done with the battery changing gig. But thank you for making it short and concise! 👍🏻👊🏻

Just bagged a Citizen Super Titanium eco-drive Tough GMT for a little over 200 used on ebay. Which makes it the 6th Citizen eco-drive in the collection. The daily wear is usually the atomic time one - nothing to set, adjust, or anything... zero fuss

I applaud them for coming out with the different styling. God knows we have enough sub homages. I just not sure about the Roman numerals on that sub-track. I would have to live with it a while to see.

I've been in the market for a Phoibos watch and this is a stunner! I think the black and gold or green colors make the octopus pop though. Quartz doesn't bother me either. Thx Jody. I noticed that you have two orange dialed automatic watches in winders behind you. Which ones are they? I noticed the book, What About Me behind you as well. Funny!!!😂

Beautiful watch. I have no problems with quartz but I do have a problem with snobbery. Each to his own though and if I could afford the $200 right now I'd be buying one. Thanks for the review and great video.

Don't have any problems with quartz movement watches. I have a Citizen Eco Drive chronograph on a bracelet. When I was on holiday in North Berwick LOL, a little local jewellers had it reduced to go at 164 pounds, and I could not believe it, because the RRP is 420 pounds. Even the biggest jewellers lowest price was 279 pounds then back to 329 pounds. I love this watch, and that one you are reviewing is a nice looking watch for the money 👍 Tam.

Mine just arrived, the GMT bezel makes the watch look too busy. I don’t know why I didn’t feel that way watching this and other videos. I’ll keep it anyways because I like everything else about the watch. I put a nylon quick release strap (Archer) on it, looks good, feels okay (it’s a bit stiff, hoping it will soften up over time).

The sentinel is an oddity, but is one that I love. It was my first phoibos, and one that i got based on your review. Don't knock its weirdness, embrace it! Also, the eagle ray line has been crushing it lately between the bronze and this latest offering.

Jody not all of us want to change the time & date on our watch everyday when matching it to our outfit, shoes & handbags. Sometimes a swiss ronda quartz movement in a fashion watch is the perfect in between, I have both swiss quartz & swiss automatics in my collection that I wear proudly.

I like quartz watches...as long as they can do a bit more than just tell the time & date in one timezone. So this looks pretty great! The 41mm x 47mm hits a sweet spot for me. I'd pay $300 if they offered modified gilt version: black/gray meteorite dial w/gold-tone bezel and a gold-tone crown protector spanning between the crowns...or just do away with the second crown and keep the 24hr markers fixed. I love the strap but a bracelet option would be nice. Great job, Phoibos!

When I first started collecting, I definitely leaned more towards automatics. I still do, if I'm honest, but a solid quartz movement can be great for accuracy, reliability, and longevity with no services. I'm particularly fond of solar quartz movements. I have the GW-M5610 G-Shock and for me this is probably the perfect quartz. Solar charging, 200m water resistance and it syncs to the atomic clock every night so I know it's the most accurate watch in the collection. I set my automatics to that watch. I also have the Seiko Solar PADI Diver and find that to be an excellent grab-and-go. More recently I acquired a Seiko SUN023 Kinetic GMT, and I think that will be the chosen travel watch. Don't knock quartz watches.👍

Got this very same watch , great minds and that. Was going to order the green , then my Mrs pointed out I just got the Pagani hulk , so went for the red version for a change and it's a belter. The whole quartz hate doesn't work for me , I have solar quartz , quartz and automatic watches in my collection. I buy what is aesthetically appealing to me . The watch which has been getting most time and most comments is the Pagani design chrono , people expect it to be an expensive watch and when I tell them where it's from and how much it costs they're genuinely shocked 🤣

Quartz GMT watches are super for long haul air travel where an automatic might not receive enough movement to keep running. And Quartz watches are so light - again no bad thing when trapped in an aluminum tube for 8+ hours. I have a Davosa GMT that is the perfect traveller and I suspect this watch would be super as well. Plus, the price! Thanks for showing this one, mate.

Agreed it’s pretty. Quartz does not bother me especially as it even makes the case thinner. Did prefer the blue or green colourways and my moans and niggles are the fluted bezel and would of preferred the minute railroad track without the Roman numerals. Having said all that it’s a crazy low price and a real steal. Loved the T shirt and the intro, the review wasn’t half bad either Jody. Excellent stuff 😁👍

Nice review. I picked up the black/white version. It’s actually very nice. I think they should of gave the watch a different name. This is completely different from there auto Eagle Ray. There is not one thing shared between them might confuse some. If they were to use an automatic movement the watch would be a lot more.

What a looker! Question: how much is a GMT movement? Could they offer a similar (thicker likely) watch in auto for $500? I’m a sucker for the sweeping movement. Likely the next quartz-regulated watch I shell out for will be a spring drive...

I really like this one and I'm quite tempted to get it, as I don't have a GMT yet in my collection. Question: why have both a rotating 24 hour bezel and a movable 24 hour hand? Don't you need just one of those 2 options to be a proper GMT? Maybe I don't get how they're used.

I wish this watch was a 38mm at that size it'd be perfect for me. If anyone ever makes a 38mm GMT I'm jumping on it. I also love Phoibos in general, owning a first generation Wave Master in blue with no date. Though they did have to send me a replacement bezel insert because the markers at the 5 minute and 10 minute indicators came off. Still haven't replaced it yet.

That red Eagle Ray lived in an open tab all of Black Friday weekend. It's good to know there's no backplay on the bezel - that's my main gripe with compressors. But now Phoibos have released new versions of the Wave Master with an NH35 movement. The green dial version looks gorgeous. Ahem - and there's this 10% code... Sláinte, Jody.

Nice quartz GMT and as usual a great review... But I couldn't help but notice that when the main hands were adjusted the GMT hand lagged significantly behind and that just doesn't seem right to me. Shouldn't it maintain the same offset? Or am I missing something obvious?
