The Evolution of Voice Acting in FNaF

Ойындар

Let’s talk about the use of voice acting in FNaF, and how that has changed over the franchise’s lifetime. No reason really, I just think this is an interesting corner of FNaF that isn't talked about very much. Guess I was wrong about not making another essay-type video.

Forgive the abrupt cut at around 29:58, a comment I made in the original upload came off far more mean-spirited than I intended, and I removed it to avoid any negative implications.
Bonk Boy try not to mention the FNaF Movie or the Aftons’ British accent in every video challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)

Especially considering Scott treated giving Freddy a voice with such importance, and the actor he ends up with has no emotional investment in FNaF whatsoever lol. No disrespect to Simmons of course, I still really like his voice :)

@Bonk Boy I was hired in May 2018 on a pay-to-play website to voice Freddy fazbear and I only talked with Scott in a couple of text messages prior to recording but he changed me to voice Nightmare Freddy. I just auditioned, got hired, did my thing and got paid. I never heard back from them or talked to them. I never played any of those games because I was busy doing voice acting and music vids on my YT channel. I was as emotionally invested as I usually am. I get a script, some basic paragraph of instruction and I record samples and they pick what they like, I do it, that's it. In the 3 years from the time I did the Fazbear audition (apparently Scott hired someone else for that and gave me Nightmare Freddy instead), I never ONCE heard from anyone at FNaF for any reason. Only got a "great job" in msg after I uploaded the file for Nightmare Freddy So, your "emotional investment" statement is ill-informed. I always give 100% on every voice job I audition for and get hired for. I've done probably 1000 voice jobs in the 15 years I've been doing voice acting. Just thought I'd chime in to sort of clarify this "emotional investment" comment. I'm STILL confused as to how Freddy Fazbear sounds exactly like ME but I didn't get hired for it. ? I guess Scott could answer that but I have no way of contacting him. Thanks!

@@bonkboy4386 If you have Scott's contact info, ask him who he hired to voice Freddy Fazbear in the AR or UCN games (whichever he's in). To me, it sounds like my voice but what do I know? Maybe he got a sound-alike to copy my audition style. Anyway, you have an incomplete view of reality because it's not all glamour and Scott called me on a phone and we talked and such. I was a complete unknown to him and he just liked my audition because I put some robot glitchy effects on it. He told me NOTHING about the game, it's lore, it's popularity or anything like that. For me, it was just another small job coming across my desk. So, don't blame me for no "emotional investment". I did what I was asked to do. Thanks!

@@TruthSurge Of course, I meant no disrespect and I'm aware voice acting is primarily just a job for plenty of actors. I don't think bad of you as a person or an actor; I adore your work and your talent. My comments were intended as jokes, but I am very much willing to remove any of my unnecessary comments on you if I really failed to see how harmful they were. I tried to research as much as I could about all actors who have worked under Scott, but I admit this comment did essentially boil down to an assumption of your character. I genuinely apologise for that.

Sadly after 4 he became a evil mastermind who somehow had futuristic technology, ownership of Fazbear’s, several secret facilities and always plotting and monologuing. It’s just not scary or grounded anymore.

Stock sound effects becoming too recognizable to be used as such is so interesting. For example, many Source Engine sounds are stock effects, things like doors opening, impact sounds or explosions became linked with Garry's Mod Team Fortress 2 or Half Life 2.

I could never hear the explosive barrel sound, the door creak and harsh stopping sound, the rumbling impact of the barrels and other metal objects etc. in anything and not think of the source engine immediately. It’s like hearing Rick May’s iconic soldier scream from tf2 in Asterix (not sure that was real). There’s just no way to make it not sound out of place when you’re so used to hearing them daily for so many years

I kinda miss the old fnaf lack of voiced dialogue, especially for the animatronics, they almost felt animalistic back then and unaware of what they're even doing and that's terrifying when combined with the context they're dead children haunting animatronic suits, imagine the confused distressed mind of a child incapable of comprehending their own mortality and trapped in a suit they can't escape from and how this distress causes them to lash out against people

also maybe this is a hot take(??? idk how to word that) but in scott wanting to give the OG freddy an iconic voice, it had a bit of the opposite effect? especially since it came out on the mobile AR game, which i feel most people didn’t play (or possibly even watch others play - but that could be anecdotal) like, even though i’ve heard multiple clips of him. when i think of “freddy” i think of glamrock freddy, toy freddy, rockstar freddy, basically everything BUT the original. also, it’s a little underwhelming for me? this isn’t a knock against the voice actor by any means, he did great, but freddy’s voice simply doesn’t stick out to me. it isn’t that memorable. but his other iterations are!

@@ratboygirl Very true. I've seen conversations about Freddy’s voice where people have gone "what do you mean? FNaF 1 Freddy doesn't have a voice". A lot of the voice performances in AR were overlooked because they were so obscure, and that's a damn shame because I really do love the extra characterisation they gave to a lot of the animatronics.

The VA is one of my favourite parts. I am so sad they almost decanonized Phone Guy, because he's my favourite. I know we'll never get a new line by Scott, but his chamge in tone, manner of speech, how he's one of the most realistic dictions in fiction, and an unabashed fanboy... I just LOVE Phone Guy! And the new gen VA certainly does a valiant effortto match him! Sometimes they succeed! 1:37 Was pretty sure that was one of Scott's kids! 2:24 Phone Dude is pretty unique. But Phone Guy switching between "I'm, uh, talking to you while flipping t-the, uh, through the cameras so Freddy doesn't tea-uh, hug me a bunch" and "Our lawyers have helpfully given us this law-compliant corporate greeting to be read off this very document when introducing new employees into this exciting business!" with complete believability is an achievement. I have seen trained voice actors do worse. Good writing, too. 6:31 Darn, was hoping the first 10 minutes would be a mini PG analysis in the vein of your Michael voice analysis. Still, that means more tike to hear the new gen talent! 18:01 Darn that line is a stab in the arm. I got too hypnotized to comment XD. All those interviews were awesome. I had not seen them. Have a sub. 21:17 An all-star cast as far as I'm concerned. Starkid level for sure. 22:57 Same, but I expected extra info in a split-frame editor's note XD 31:13 This guy is my top 4 and 5 voices of that game. Just behind Pigpatch. Love that "Yarr! When you play with fire, sometimes, ye get burn'd!" and "Ye win som, ye lose sum...". And nevermind the glorious Mr. Hippo monologues. 31:47 Great voice 33:09 This one goes just above pigpatch for me.

The Phone Guy is particularly interesting because his duplicitous nature is not malicious in any way. While the first game made it appear as if he was willingly covering his ears to the danger that Freddy's poses, the second game onwards retconned his character into being a massive fanboy who lies to keep the façade of family fun not just to keep his job, but to keep his favourite characters (particularly Foxy) alive. It makes his death in the first game a far bigger tragedy than a mere tension-builder; for he kept trying to ignore the complete hellscape that the franchise had been since it was founded, and that ignorance led to his death. If he had just let go, he would still be alive.

It's really amazing, and the actors do such a phenomenal job across the board. One note about the video I have is the audio leveling is a bit off at times, speaking from experience that can REALLY bite you back if you're not careful. I try and pay really close attention to making sure everything is at the same relative volume now cus I've screwed it up bad myself in the past >.< it's super important. Really great video. I love seeing appreciation for our amazing voice actors that bring these beloved characters to life. Although, may I just mention, the most overlooked FNaF voice provider that you didn't end up including: *Suzanne Elise Freeman* I wish more people talked about her. She has by far done the most voice work for this franchise, with well over 100 hours of audio and has been constantly in the same position for over 6 years now, if not longer. She is the main non-diagetic FNaF narrator pretty much and I'm pretty certain 70% of the fanbase wouldn't even know what she's from if not told. I think she does the audiobooks fantastically. Because, yeah, she's the official audiobook narrator. Did everything since The Silver Eyes, up to The Bibbiedots Conclusion. Her voice is still how I imagine Charlie, even though Jena Rundus has technically spoken in adult voice in other games. The vibe and atmosphere she builds even for the less good anthology stories certainly is part of why I am such a huge fan of the books. Really wish she got more recognition for her phenomenal work. Not complaining about the non-inclusions though. Just thought it'd fit the topic to talk about some VAs you missed :P

Oh wow had no idea. I never considered bringing up the audiobooks when talking about the voice actors but that is a good point. Having that much of an involvement in the series for that long, it's a shame she's so overlooked. The fact that she's had to read so many FNaF books alone should earn her the recognition lol. Seriously though that's really interesting. That might be the most obscure corner of voiceover in FNaF, the audiobooks.

So it’s fitting that he’s a faceless, kinda shifty person who doesn’t particularly care about your or the kids roaming the pizzeria’s safety. As well as not fully committing to reading the whole company introduction, and passing over the more worrying details about your safety being at risk and not covering life/injury insurance, and downplaying how much danger you’re in from the animatronics he obviously knows are dangerous and have killed people before, previous guards, customers, etc. He’s the perfect character to show that the Fazbear company is only worried about their own reputation and financial stability, and not your safety or wellbeing, but still downplaying it to keep you around and somewhat confident/sure in your position

UCN and AR was basically just fanservice but I still love them for that, especially Mangle and Freddy's lines in AR, they're some of my favorites in the franchise. It's also neat knowing Kellen did in fact show up as an extra for the fnaf movie, replacing foxy's stock sound humming with his own song (which sounds identical btw, he did great). Hopefully with the 10 year anniversary we'll get a game that goes back to the roots of Scott's games because man I miss them

Kudos to you for being one of the few to talk about voice acting in FNaF & actually be positive about it for once. ^-^ Most people I see only shit on it for "rUiNiNg tHe aTmOsPhErE" of the horror or something along those lines, which is only really agreeable of SB & even then, that's only because of poor execution & rushed half-baked content to get money from the franchise, not because of the actual voice acting itself, which is pretty decent in my opinion, especially for GR. Freddy (good ole Kellen Goff), Montgomery Gator & to a lesser extent Vanny (when she's actually present).

Absolutely! If anything the voice acting elevates the horror, and I'd much rather talk about why it works when it does than bash the talents of these voice actors just because their voices weren't used in a specific way or whatever. I really like the voice acting in FNaF, and I hope I at least came close to doing it justice heheh

@@bonkboy4386 Exactly! I mean, have these people NEVER seen ghost children in a horror game? The giggles, the visual horror of the dead's ghastly faces of disturbing happiness, the subtle threatening words coming out of manifested souls of malicious intent. We all know that ghost children are horrifying because it's taking something innocent & corrupting it into something truly demonic & inhuman. I'm most certain you have done it the justice it deserves & I am so thankful of you for doing so, maybe now the community will start to look at it in a better light? Probably never, children never learn until they're held at gunpoint or hitting range, but we can hope for the mature members to learn.

@@thechoirtar6077I know this is 9 months old, but I don't think Security Breach was for getting a quick buck from the FNAF franchise, there was a TON of love put into that game, but they were WAY to ambitious for something they couldn't pull off in such a short time, and with Coivd and all, hopefully it was a learning experience for them for future games, they fixed a lot of issues with the Ruin DLC.

@@it2spooky4me79 Maybe not originally, but the fact that they took up Sony's awful "deal" that forced it to become "kid-friendly" (to the point of removing Vanny's knife, a character who barely exists in any timeline and probably never will exist now, therefore is a pointless character) and made them scrap SO MUCH content suggests otherwise, that or extreme foolishness by lesser minded people. It seemed to of made them realise what not to do thankfully, though I will hold my breath on them not viewing the franchise as a cash cow opportunity to milk to its last drop until I see something so genuine and not painfully flawed to the point where it's not even funny or just an overlooked mistake that I can safely say otherwise about them.
