The evolution of the movie backdrop

Matte paintings have transformed movies for over a hundred years. AI could be the next step in making them.

When I look at movies from the ’20s to the ’90s, I’m blown away by the worlds that filmmakers were able to create with their visuals. From Mary Poppins to Ben-Hur to Star Wars, they truly made things that people had never seen before - all with little to no help from computers.
How did they pull off such striking and novel visuals? Well, often, it was just with a paintbrush and some glass.
With a technique called matte painting, skilled artists would paint a scene and black out a portion of the frame for live-action photography. The actors would be filmed on footage that blacked out the painted backdrop, and then filmmakers would combine the two exposures to make one seamless scene.
This, of course, all changed once computers entered the industry. By the late 1990s, matte paintings were almost entirely digital. Just a few decades later and now they’re almost all made in 3D.
With the development of AI, a new evolution might be on the horizon. Tune in to Vox’s latest to find out how AI might soon change the matte painting industry - again.

And in those days I’ve used Ai to do things that should’ve taken me 10x longer to do, leading to booking cancellations because I’ve done the job in no time. So yeah, bit scared.

My last job was 80% writing social media posts. I quit at the end of last year to start my own business as I could see the writing on the wall. They’ve replaced me with ChatGPT and they’re getting the same engagement as before. Now I’m working in a higher-skilled position. But eventually that might get automated. It’s all about chasing the next gig I guess. Not fun, but if you don’t, you’ll go down with the ship.

Seems like you are helping with the demise of your own field. 10x times less work means 10x less pay, and at a certain point, what skills are you bringing to the table that a random person that could be paid less can't do with AI?

Morality is immaterial. What matters is a solution that ensures everybody eats. I suppose in the best timeline, we could see some kind of negotiation with data brokers so that artists can extract a fair percentage of the extra value gained, just as KZread gives out 55% of ad revenue to their creators.

As an animator, I often wonder who is asking this question, are you a fellow artist or are you an audience? I'm asking this because any artist would know that all of art is about "stealing", not just "steal like an artist", but as Plato and Aristotle argued way back, art is a mimesis of nature, all of art is a copy of a copy of nature. Who owns any part of any art that was made? When you do a kit bash for a prop, did the sculptor not grab pieces from other existing art pieces and objects? When photoshop a composition for a backdrop as this video demonstrated, a standard industry practice, did you not grab pieces from existing images? AI just does the same thing but faster.

I worry about editorial judgement being compromised with this sponsorship. Even though Vox states "Microsoft has no editorial influence on our videos," financial compensation can still absolutely affect the reporting.

The remark that using AI is cheaper must have been made without the awareness of the true costs, not just of producing films but, more generally speaking, our whole way of living. AI needs a lot of electrical power for training computers and eventually having them produce these high quality graphics. Most of it is produced with fossil fuels. Building and periodically replacing all those computers takes often irreplaceable natural resources and leaves a lot of waste. The costs of our expensive way of living will have to be paid for by future generations, because we will not.

However as soon as I were to tell you it was AI generated your mentality would instantly change and you would say again “Anything created by AI has no soul, just boring, bland, garbage, etc.” People now a days such as yourself have created this purely toxic mental mind and hate anything that’s AI generated. Please make a Video about Sora AI🙏🙏. I was interested in animation but because of Sora I am so much confused Right Now. Should I learn animation, should I learn coadding or any other thing which are related to computer work cause I think it is the matter of time when Computers which were made to make things easy for humans will be taking everything from us. It can do everything. I know this might not be that time but we can see it is coming towards us really fast. Technology is advancing really fast, it is growing in such a speed which we can not even adapt to it. My first question is if AI can create movies, songs and every creative thing that humans can do and it can be done by every person then what will be the value of art because if it happens then there will be movies which will be releasing in each and every second in the world. same goes for music. I mean if everyone can create music and movies just by using some prompts then who will be the audience. I mean who will be watching those things. I know that this "many" thing is happening I mean , many people are making different contents and the number of creator are increasing day by day But the thing is it's not about "how many creators" now it's about "Why is everyone a creator" because people are still watching things and supporting creator until now I mean it's not that big number in my view. Not every is perfect in everything that's why many industry exist that's why everyone can not make movies, if a person who is doing his job and when he comes to home he just use some random words and make a movie by just using AI. There won't be any value to these things. And I hope that it won't happen. And even if it happens then My second question is who will be known as talented person or an artist? I think I have a answer for this question those who can type some words or who can command AI to create things will be known as artist not those who knows how to sing not those who knows how to draw not any one who are actually artist and are talented. And at last I want to say one thing that i have used the word "movie" in this comment many time it was just to explain my opinion in a clear way.🙏

Ahhh, so Max Burman is one of the guys to blame for ruining how sci-fi movies are made. AI will be the nail in the coffin.

And now Soma AI... I just hate this, it's going to feed into the pleasure now aspect of our society (tiktok, ect) and eliminate thousands of artist's job. Though, I have hope that people will support artists over AI, and make an effort to see something actually created WITH effort. If not, then I hope a meteor hits us soon.

Ugh. What an uncritical look at the subject. I believe that Microsoft didn’t have any editorial control, but man this is a sad one.

how we watched the same video? They talked about the limitations and grey area re. the lP. What major point have they missed that would deem this video to be "uncritical"? Genuinely asking.

Then film production needs to separate what works used AI and which ones did not.

Secret invasion though? 🙃 Some of the AI commentary here seems a little out of date. Style and composition tuning is a big part of e.g. MJ6, and AI faces do not typically look distinguishable from photographic anymore.

AI is great. I'm pretty sure it has been used in production, but more in a deepfake way rather than as a matte painting tool. I know a lot of places uses it for concept art or references though.
