The Evolution of Mobile Quarterbacks

Спорт

In the modern NFL, the evolution of mobile quarterbacks can be broken up into 5 separate eras.
The Shift-(1940s to 1960s)
The Experimental Era-(1970s to early 80s)
A New Wave-(1980s to mid 90s)
Here to Stay-(mid 90s to 00s)
2nd experimental Era-(2010s)

Sup everyone, I’m back. Moving forward, you should be seeing my face (and my videos) more often. Some notes I wanted add to this video. 1) I chose to focus on mostly the main mobile quarterbacks who impacted the style of play. I didn’t talk about every single dual threat (or any of the ones who ultimately failed like Johnny Manziel) 2. Steve McNair passed away in 2009 from fatal gunshot wounds. I chose not to talk about it because he wasn’t the primary focus of the video. R.I.P. Steve “Air” McNair. 3. With this being my first facecam video in awhile, let me know if you have any suggestions! And let me know what you thought of this style of video (the combo of facecam with highlights) Anyways, thanks guys for all your patience. Expect uploads more frequently from here on out!

Sam Washam well it wasn’t necessarily his girlfriend that killed him. They say McNair was having an affair with the woman who killed him. I’m guessing the woman he was having an affair with either became obsessed or she got jealous because she knew of the marriage. It was ruled a murder-suicide. She killed him then committed suicide.

That wave that featured Cam, Kap, RG3, and Russel Wilson was legendary. They all had some type of success whether it was running or passing. Cam brought in the read option, but Rg3 revolutionized it. Redskins use to run sets primarily out of the "Pistol" formation. Then the 49ers and Seahawks started using it once they seen the success RG3 was having with it. Now we have Lamar and Kyler Murray. Hope they carry on the legend of the running QB.

9:15 Love that play forever, if for no other reason than the commentators are just as much out of breath as Steve himself. And this is such a cool video as usual. It feels amazing that it's taken the NFL this long to implement so many of these QBs, they are so effective and a total wild card when it comes to trying to cover them on defense.

Honestly I think for a mobile quarterback to be great, their passing has to be their main strength. Guys like Mahomes and Wilson are passers with incredible arms who use their legs as supplemental tools to improve their game. Guys like Tebow, however, were primarily runners who had below average arms

  • @matthewtriaszin1965

    @matthewtriaszin1965

The "real" pocket passer will be out if Linebackers and d-linemen continue to become more and more athletic. This isn't because O-lines aren't able to provide protection, but because a QB that can't at least scramble out of pressure is genuinely a *numerical disadvantage for offences*. The stereotypical Brett Favre/Eli Manning esque gunslinger is gone for similar reasons, at this point the only form of pocket QB that can keep up is the quick releasers like Brady and Garappolo, because again, the longer a QB stays in the pocket the longer a defence has to use their numerical superiority. With a mobile QB, the QB is no longer a numerical disadvantage, as a good scrambler is a threat on pass plays *regardless of them using their arms or legs*, you have to cover both or you end up letting them gain huge chunks of yardage. If you mean in a sense that QBs will always be passers first and foremost you're absolutely correct, but it's simply untrue that the prototypical pocket QB could genuinely survive in today's NFL.

Arguably the top 4 QB's right now are all mobile (Mahomes, Russ, Lamar and Watson.) There's definitely still a lot of pocket passers but most of them atleast have the speed to scramble should the play break down.

  • @8MoneyIzmyMission8

Lol, it's not a "thing " it's the way to go. Name a pocket passer outside of Jared Goff who has came into the league this decade and accomplished anything statistically, record, or super bowl wise? Want me to name mobile and dual threats off the top of my head? Andrew Luck, Russell Wilson, Dak Prescott, Pat Mahomes, amar Jackson, DeShaun Watson, Jameis Winston, Cam, Newton. The top 5 QBs on draft boards for next year are all dual threats. Mobile and dual threats are the here and now, and the future. Good to great pocket passers are a dying breed in the NFL.

@@8MoneyIzmyMission8 Would never say never on that. There are always transcending players in the NFL. Last season Wentz basically played like a pocket Qb in the second half of the year and carried the team with everyone injured to the playoffs. Ultimately guys like Watson and even Jackson will be scrambling a lot less and passing more from the pocket

  • @Kylora2112

The NFL meta is constantly shifting as players get bigger, stronger, and faster. Goalpost QBs like Dan Marino and Peyton Manning *used* to be the standard. Now that linebackers are faster, you can't just sit in the pocket. You can't have a QB like Drew Bledsoe who can't think on his feet when he's under pressure (I live in New England and watched Drew throw pick after pick after he got flushed out of the pocket). Jared Goff is the outlier. The best QBs in the league are either old (Brady, Brees, Rivers, Matty Ice) or mobile (Mahomes, Jackson, Wilson).

Running back is one of the last real punishing positions left - they get injured way more than any other offensive player. That's why tight ends are doing so well right now they have little risk of injury.

Hi from over the pond here in Northern Ireland. I'm a 49ers FANATIC. I got all nostalgic watching this video as I started watching American Football 🏈 as a teenager in the mid eighties. Back then I bought a guide book to the rules of American Football, published by Channel 4,the first TV channel to show the sport in the UK. In it, the Quaterback was described as player who could scramble if he wanted to but because he wore less padding as other positions and was there fore more prone to injury he wouldn't make a habit of it. As can be seen in your video, how times have changed.I preferred the realistic player figure dressed as a Patriot logo of New England to their current one. Two suggestions. 1-Do a video on the NFL International games, primarily London. 2- Although it may be before your time do a video on NFL Europe.

Not true at all, anyone who watches the tape can see that most mobile QB's simply aren't good passers and tend to get injured more often. Even guys like Randall Cunningham didn't really shine until late in his career when he got Randy Moss. Vick and Jackson keep getting exposed in the playoffs. Mobility works when it isn't used as a crutch, you can't be like the Texans and skimp on the O-line because you expect Deshaun Watson to be able to keep pulling magic tricks out his ass

My prediction is that by the end of this decade the classic pocket passer is gone, at least as a starter QB, and all of the starting QB's will be at least a scrambler type. The development of defensive athletic players will be one reason, but another is that a mobile QB will make it harder for defenses to adapt to the diversity a dual threat QB has in an offense.
