The Evolution of Grasslands: What Plant Fossils Reveal About One of the Largest Ecosystem Changes

Presented by Dr. Caroline Strömberg of the University of Washington, Seattle, March 23, 2023.
Grass-dominated habitats cover more than 40 percent of Earth’s land surface and provide a home for millions of animals, including humans. Many questions still remain about how and when grassland ecosystems spread across the continents during the last ~30 million years. This talk highlights research using microscopic plant fossils to better understand this important ecological change.
