The EVOLUTION of FILM in 3 minutes

This montage began as a labor of love and quickly became an obsession of mine. Many days and hours were spent researching clips, downloading and editing. This could not have been possible without the complete and total encouragement from my wife Tiffany ... you rock!
The following montage chronicles the evolution of film from its conception in 1878 by Edward J. Muybridge to the Lumiere brothers in 1895. Georges Melies a trip to the moon in 1902 was a total game changer and from there we go to the first theatrical releases starting in 1920-2014 ... this portion of the montage is chronological.
There are some notable films which are absent from the montage such as the Great Train Robbery (1903), The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) and Birth of a Nation (1915). These and many others were either impossible to find or did not fit in with the creative direction of the montage. There is also a Dumb and Dumber (1994) dancing clip between Tropic Thunder and 500 Days of Summer ... this was intentional I assure you.
The following is fan made. I do not own the music or footage being used and DO NOT intend to profit in any way from the montage above. I am just a movie buff promoting cinema and my love for everything film.

@klausweasley ... Unfortunately a lot of tough choices had to be made when the montage began coming together. This resulted in quiet a few films having to be cut out. I was limited to one clip per year.

I know you can't put every single film ever made in this montage, but you should've put Star Wars and Star Trek. At least. Good job though!
And here's another film clip montage that DOESN'T feature STAR WARS!

Gear job m8. I miss some of movies, but this is still one of best videos i ever seen. Thank you.
Recuerdo ver este video en la primaria y alucinar. Gran trabajo, saludos desde España!!
Wow awesome video! Wanted to ask for a list of movies used in the clip, but it´s all in the description (: Nothing more to ask for - Thanks man!
>Puts Zac Efron > Misses Pulp Fiction
1985- Should have been Back to the Future 1991- Should have been Terminator 2:Judgement Day but I accept the list you compiled.
That was incredibly enjoyable, thank you Mr. Ewing.
So cool. The music (though somewhat cliched) adds greatly to the excitement and wow factor. So much yes!!!
Wow this was really good! Keep it up with the good work!

Where is Pulp fiction?
Great effort . I understand the importance of James Bond but surely some of them could've been held back for a shot from Metropolis and Star Wars
Great Job!! I love some of these movies :D
Great!! I like this very much thank you for all your work.
1 movie per year is really not enough!

It doesn't really matter if it's overrated or not, It changed the film industry. No one thought Star Wars was going to be a big hit in 1977, a world when the Vietnam War was still going on and many of the films didn't have a hero. It sparked the imaginations of millions. Without Star Wars, we wouldn't have ILM the famous special effects team. And without ILM we wouldn't have groundbreaking films like Jurassic Park and Terminator Judgement Day.

Love this video but probably would have included Star Wars harry potter and something from Arnie
This is amazing! What song is this?
That was great, fair play! :)
Very good work! Only with a 999 hours video would be possible to show all the rest like Star Wars, The Blues Brothers, Ghostbusters, Lord Of The Rings, Toy Story, Shining and others :) Well done, especially the two James Bond flashes!

Nice and lovely work. Maybe Luis Buñuel should be included like other foreign film-makers but this could be a second video idea ;) I'm asking myself, why this song? Did "The social network" rowing scene inspired you or it's just coincidence? Thanks!

I was stuck for awhile as for which direction to take the montage in. I knew I wanted to do it chronological but I could not figure out how to start it. Then a friend of mine showed me a trailer he had done using this song and BAM it suddenly made sense to me. Once I had this song, the rest began to take shape. So glad you liked it and I ASSURE you that the follow up will contain more foreign films. I'm not trying to self promote but here is my Vimeo link ... the follow up will be posted there in the coming weeks. vimeo.com/home/myvideos thanks for checking it out

again ... star wars came out the same year as Close Encounters of the Third Kind (a better film mind you) and Empire came out the same year as Airplane. I couldn't leave out the quote from Airplane and that scene from Close Encounters is iconic and both worked better so I could not include any clips. I limited myself to ONE clip per year. And the astronaut walk in the Right Stuff came out the same year as Jedi so it was cut. Scott Ewing Let me remind you that Star Wars won 6 Oscars vs just one from Close Encounters of the Third Kind
@scottewing1978
10 жыл бұрын
Felipe Gaete Román yep and it was nominated for 9. Star Wars won ALL the technical awards (none of the big ones) that year much like the tent pole movies do today. I personally feel that Close Encounters is a better movie and that's what makes film great. Its subjective. I could only include ONE clip from EVERY year so unfortunately Star Wars was cut out. If this was an EFFECTS driven montage then yes, Star Wars makes it but lets not forget the effects in Close Encounters which are equally amazing. Oscars do not mean it's a better movie. If that were the case then "How Green was my Valley" is a better movie then "Citizen Kane".

Hell yeah, Top Gun! 2:05
Love The Karate Kid in there!!
Where is godfather?
Bit of a disservice that all these films have been forced into the same aspect ratio
Loved it specially in love with Chaplin but I think it would be greater if you put more likeThe Godfather, Starwars and Psycho or maybe Shawshank Redemption and Scent of a woman ! :D
Somebody know who the actress in 1:09 is? I've seen her in a bunch of things, but I haven't found her name.

Not complaining but I would've liked to see some french new wave and some italian neo-realism, still great tho
instead of National Velvet I'd have gone for Double Indemnity
¿Truffaut, Godard, Fellini, Tarkovsky, Kurosawa, Waters, Burton, Almodóvar...?
@scottewing1978
10 жыл бұрын
Kurosawa is in there but I limited myself to only ONE clip for every year so unfortunately some very famous films/directors were left out. I made this as a celebration of film and to show just how far we have come in a short period of time. I will absolutely try to fit these directors into subsequent montages, they are all pretty much my faves and thanks for checking out my montage.
Should be called "The History of American film with Lumière, Méliès and Caligari added in the beginning and Kurosawa somewhere in the middle". What with the absence of Eisenstein, Dreyer, poetic realism, Italian neorealism, Bergman, European New Wave cinema and so much else that's not American...
One film per year of movies I completely understand why you chose The Wizard of Oz over Gone with the wind😊😊😊

Scott Ewing Oh I 100% agree that Close Encounters is a much stronger movie than Star Wars. The reason why I mentioned it is because it just threw me off a little bit when a big a following it created to change the way films are made today for better or worse was omitted. Your video no doubt is one of the finest montages I've seen when it comes to homage in film. I do appreciate you reading my comment and considered taking your time to re-edit your video to include Star Wars. Also in all honesty, I still think the one with Close Encounters was better, but please don't let go against the time you took to re-edit it to include Star Wars. I deeply appreciate your taste in film and that you got to show that off with a cool montage in how filmmakers have expressed art visually on the big screen for over a hundred years.

Star Wars came out the same year as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Empire the same year as Airplane and Jedi that same year as the Right Stuff ... I could only include one clip from each year so unfortunately Star Wars was left off. They were in the rough cut but as the montage began to come together their presence no longer worked so they were cut out. This montage is basically a fun way of showing just how far film techniques have come along. Many MAJOR special FX's scenes were left out intentionally as I did not want to focus primarily on FX's ... thanks for checking out the montage. Hope you liked it.
