You have an ability to lift any subject from the regions of ordinariness and present it in the most intellectually stimulating manner. I agree that crime in Gotham and Batman are inter-dependent and inter-connected. One fuels the existence of the other. In Nolan's 'Dark Knight', the whole concept of Batman and Joker being the two sides of the same coin gets consciously explored like it has been in the comics earlier. We all know about the childhood trauma that Batman faced. But in 'Dark Knight' the Joker extensively speaks about his abusive father and how he used to mistreat him. So Batman and Joker are both victims of unfortunate childhoods. While in Batman's case, this triggered a obsession to be vengeful by combating crime, in Joker's case this childhood trauma made him 'an agent of chaos'. But his main fascination lies in gaining the attention of Batman. He views Batman as a version of his own self. So yeah Gotham does lend itself to a circular connection between crime and its saviour Batman. Batman exists because of crime and crime intensifies because of Batman. This is never-ending. P.S. - I think Burton's vision of Gotham was to some extent inspired by Ridley Scott's vision of Los Angeles of 2019 in 'Blade Runner'.

+Avik Basu You do realise the abusive father story is only one of many that the Joker tells regarding his scars? For all we know, each and every one of them can be bullshit, either prepared or improvised, depending on the subject listening to the story and the result the Joker wants to see.

+wtfpantera Certainly one can easily view them as random made up stories that the Joker comes up with for intimidating people. But I think there is a scope to interpret it in the way I did. Joker is an absolute freak and for him to be the way he is, something must have gone wrong when he was a child. That's why, even though someone might accuse me of reading too much into it, I think his remarks about his father are somewhat true which he presents in a sensationalised way. At least that's how I view his character.

Not sure who at DC to credit but it's been said that Gotham is New York at night. The crime, mystery, and despair of a sprawling megalopolis takes its toll on the people who turn to crime. In contrast, Metropolis embodies the awe and sense of community from New York during the daytime

Gotham has been many different cities at once I think. Much of it's industrial sprawl invokes comparisons to Detroit/Windsor while it's downtown core certainly invites parallels to New York City. Honestly though, I think it's meant to simply be the bad part of town present in all urban areas. The rotten core that the wealthy and the middle class have fled. It's the perfect bad old town, the endgame of any city planner's worst nightmare.

Eh, Gotham may have gotten its name from NYC's early termonologies, but the actual feel and look is purely Chicago. Mob ties, extremely corrupt cops and politicians, The Dark Knight captured what Gotham is without having to try too hard...from the street lights, to the gothic architecture, Chicago is Gotham City.

*+Arthur Dent* I agree that Gotham in Batman Begins resembled the comics much more, but the realism of it in the Dark Knight actually frightened me more; seeing that someone like the Joker could come from a regular city. Oh and I'm getting a masterclass with Hans Zimmer on Friday. He got me into making my own soundtracks and I'm so excited to learn from him.

The GOTHAM TV show, while not terrible, kind of undermined Batman's origin by making the identity of the murderer REALLY, REALLY IMPORTANT. I always thought the whole point of Bruce's parents dying was to exemplify the level of crime in the city that could happen to anyone, even a rich little boy.

If you like this idea of Gotham and its relationship to Batman, then you'll love Scott Snyder's runs on Detective Comics Vol 1 (pre-New 52) and Batman Vol 2 (new 52). In both, his thesis is that Gotham is almost a living thing that changes anyone that attempts to tame it. In the former he's exploring this by seeing what would happen with Dick Grayson as Batman. In the latter, Batman realizes there are secrets to the city he didn't know about.

One lack that I feel in Gotham is *"not enough Gothamers."* City of God is as much about favela as it is about "favelados". With Batman, I see the crime against citizens, the efforts to protect those citizens, but never _the citizens_ in the spotlight.

First and foremost, I want to say that I really appreciate you making this video. I am a big Batman fan, and so this is especially wonderful to me. I think an analogy that might help you better describe Gotham is that it is like an acting performance--they all include slightly different details, but there isn't a "best" representation. It's interesting because this video ties nicely into one of my criticisms of The Dark Knight, which is that in it, Gotham is not particularly defined; in other words, it could be any city since it didn't include in the storyline some of the identifying features of Gotham like Batman Begins does with the Narrows or Arkham. Also, I really like how you seamlessly incorporated the Batman Begins and Lego: Batman themes into the video.

The video is great as always, but damn those chills all the way with every single music from Danny Elfman and Hans Zimmer in the background...that's the stuff of legend.

"Irrepressible criminal underclass." Nice line. Liked it. Love 5:15. That's a great look on West's face with Neeson's dialogue.

This one was empowering. I love architecture and the blending of the different cityscapes of Gotham gave me the feel of a bird flying through the skyscrapers. Your HD is breathtaking. The best I've seen. And by the way, your vids do resonate and make me think. I would like to see more YT personalities take on a intellectual approach rather than comedy.

You have made a very contemporary, or let's say modern definition of what an actual city is from 4:55 to the ending. I have been studying architecture, I'm a senior this year, and what you are talking about is actually a pretty complex way of understanding urban theory! You have peaked sir. Much respect.

VERY cool and well put together. As an avid Batman fan since childhood I agree completely and was also very pleased you mentioned Batman TAS, which is surprisingly little known, considering how defining and big it was in it's time.

We need more Batman videos like these and this was very interesting. Maybe next time you could do a video about delving into the minds of Batman or Joker, or even Arkham Asylum itself and the criminals that are there. Overall, great video! Looking forward to more Batman stuff.

I love your commentary and piercing analysis. I would have never looked at gotham as a character itself like that. Perhaps the path towards a darker cityscape gotham was also an influenced by Bladerunner? The timeline matches up and the cityscapes seem to have a very similar dystopian feel. Just upped my patreon for some of that sticker swag too. I love that I can support great creators like you and gives me that fuzzy feeling inside while using Adblock.

ive been following your work for a few weeks now and your videos wont cease to amaze me! one of the best channels ive subbed, definitely. I really like how wide are the themes you explore in your different videos and how you point out things that are pretty obvious once you tell them but, however, when im watching this or that i dont pay much attetion to it. You make us viewers be more aware of what art is trying to depict with a certain thing such as the figure of The city of Gotham itself. Have you thought of making something related to science literature? i bet you have read something about Carl Sagan and i rekon you would do an amazing job on it! or also any Spielberg movies hahaha, I think "A.I Artificial Intelligence" is a really underrated movie and is one of the main films depicting A.I.; Maybe a video about A.I in films throught time?? Anyways, keep doing what you, your content is really good.
