The Evolution of Backcountry Snowbiking

CLICK for the full story and more snowbike action: win.gs/RennerTimbersled
The snowbike: a seemingly normal motocross bike modified with a front ski and a 10 inch wide track in the back, making for one of the most innovative and versatile snow machines we've ever seen. Professional Snowbike riders Brock Hoyer & Reagan Seig take to the Idaho backcountry with freerider Ronnie Renner to lay first tracks on some backcountry bowls and steep chutes - taking the sport, and the timbersled, to places previously unridden.

Love how at 3:20 you talk about doing snow pits and assessing the snowpack and then 3 riders get on the slope at the same time. I think your sport is alright but you have a lot to learn about the backcountry.

Joel Little it's that type of attitude that's going to get you killed out there man. Avalanches are unpredictable. A deep snow avalanche is one that breaks out the entire snowpack and is often unsurvivable.

@@SpengioDoy yeah sorry to break your heart but a snowbike is quite a bit faster, heavier, and more manueverable than a pair of backcountry skis. snow can only roll down a hill so fast

This looks awesome, but honestly I think down the steeps, skiing is probably more of a thrill. But the fact that they can keep hitting those lines over and over in the backcountry, that's what really sets this apart.

Take your life in your hands. Give me a break. My friends and I were doing this sort of stuff in the back country of Montana on snowmobiles 45 years ago. I can remember being in the remote back country many miles from the nearest home in powder so deep and light the sleds could hardly make any headway. Winter camping in the back country was another favorite activity. I hate to break it to you guys but you are not breaking new ground. I do have to admit the snow bikes look like big fun. We used to hit the back country on motorcycles before the snow came and that was a lot of fun but the snow bikes look like a whole different experience.

they actually don't tuck the front end that much... I've grown up riding sleds and just last winter rode my first timbersled. they take a little getting used to but once you figure how they ride it's pretty easy. they don't sink in the snow that much, pretty much just float on the snow.

Not an issue I'd worry about. I'd be worried if the thing broke down being way the hell up there. What are you gonna do then? Cant exactly push it & just walking back without it to wherever your car is could be a dangerous proposition to say the least. Only issue I ever had with sled ski's ever - from the 70's to now - is culverts. You mostly ride the back & the front has little weight on it.
