As usual, the audio is a bit shit in places. While recording the audio for this video, I went through three different laptops (covered by warranty, thank God!) and had to do factory resets a few times as well. All in all, I had to re-download Premiere Pro and Audition four times. In addition, I had to record in three different sittings, two of which were while I had a cold, and one in a hotel. The whole thing was a nightmare. One day, I'll get the audio right. One day...

    To be fair his point was valid. Yes an enemy called the sadist would drag out your death but that still doesn't account for why if you have him set up for a stealth kill the game won't let you because he's a part of the story and he can't die yet is just bad game design.

    Chris Davis just finished the video. Certainly not interested in partaking in the whole game, but certain bits of the gameplay and story sounded pretty entertaining. This game is detailed enough that throughout the story you can even see Sebastian rubbing the back of his neck, where the stem connection cord is stuck in his irl neck, he also runs his head because he knows subconsciously this isn't real, just not consciously. Seriously. Mikami is a genius I'll never stop saying it. And paying homage to your own work in a previous series isn't dumb, it made me smile so fucking hard each time the game referenced resident evil, made me think that Mobius could just be part of umbrella. Love these games. Especially number one.

    @@gamefan987 I agree with you to the point that a good story and design isn’t enough to call a game a good game. This game has many flaws and gameplay is lacking in many ways. It is hard to understand how it could happened after RE4. Mikami often says in time when RE4 was created there was no technology that could run his ideas. And i think Mikami, after all those years, wanted from EW to be so many things, that eventually it became to much for one game. So for me EW is an interesting game with many flaws but it is a great horror experience. And when you look through the flaws you can see something truly remarkable. And in that regard I would say EW is a masterpiece.

    @@reanimatorpl "And when you look through the flaws you can see something truly remarkable" sorry but no. You can't use this excuse for every piece of medium ever created. I know you didn't mean it that eay but what you've said is "when you ignore all the bad things then the game is good". Also Mikami's intent has nothing to do with game being good. He might've had the best game ever in his head, but EW is not that game. I like EW, but I think it got what it deserved ... no place in gaming history.

All I want to do is to put some light to a second layer of this medium which definitely has some good ideas and an art of creative mind of Shinji Mikami. I am not defending the game. I am maybe a bit defending Mikami who just put too many ideas in one game and forgot that a game has to have a good gameplay in the first place.

Even on Akumu i had seen the game over screen only 29 times, and only 3 times in the second Akumu run and later even without deaths. The Difficulty on normal and advanced are completely doable and fair, only Akumu has some sections that are not doable without completely knowing every attack pattern and enemy spawn positions, cough...... cough...... eleveator and bus ride. The Evil Within is such a polarising game for me - one half of me absolutely loves it for doing something drastically different from compared to the vast majority of AAA games with its focus on psychological horror, macabre aesthetic and generally being a very trippy game with all of the crazy nonsense. But it's also a huge missed opportunity to bring back proper survival horror with its mostly linear level design, emphasis on combat that doesn't work all the time and poorly delivered story that's otherwise interesting, unless it's done deliberately to force players to craft a theory of what's going on but it's never as nuanced or cleverly done as the possibility of the indoctrination theory in Mass Effect 3. That is easily one of the most awesome pieces of subtle mindfuck I've ever seen in a game once players started cooking that up back in 2012, granted if it's actually true. It's such an odd game but I really do like it a lot - I just feel it could have been so much more but here's hoping the sequel fixes the issues of the first and is an overall awesome game!

    Thank you, Chris, for taking so much time to produce this video! I completed The Evil Within, and while I had a number of complaints, the story drove me forward. I was frustrated by a great number of issues that you touched on, though I did find myself with plenty of ammo for when I needed it. I believe this is because I move slowly through horror games with scarce resources and optimize using kills that minimize resource consumption. I notice there are others here who give you a lot of flak for your complaints and issues. If I recall, you played through on Survival difficulty, correct? I agree entirely that the most frustrating part of The Evil Within is that it ALMOST feels like it's about to do something great. Things like the tiny sprint meter (he's a Detective!), match limit, melee that can SHATTER boxes and chains, but takes 20 hits to kill a standard enemy, inability to aim while crouching, and others, really felt like bad design for me. I don't see why some people here ravenously defend The Evil Within for your opinion on it. I felt let down when I got beyond the first initial area with the chainsaw enemy, and I believe it's because, first, the game was hyped up so much for me and I expected something like Resident Evil 4 but more horrifying, and second, I get the sense the game is attempting to do too much at once instead of dropping certain elements in order to optimize others and become truly exceptional at them. That isn't to say that a game can't be good at many different approaches, but I feel like The Evil Within was mediocre at many when it could have dropped some aspects entirely and become absolutely outstanding at a few. I haven't watched your critique on The Evil Within 2, as I'll be getting around to playing it myself this Halloween. It is to my understanding that the overall design and control "tightness" of The Evil Within 2 are better than the first, but I have seen a lot of people who are fans of the first one hate on the second one for having a mediocre story. I think the hate you get from die-hard fans of this game is silly and childish. This video was outstanding and clearly took hours and hours of devotion to complete. My only preference would be for you to have split the main game and DLC up for two videos, or at least added a commercial point before you start the DLC recap. I know that won't be a popular statement to most viewers (but let's be honest, how many people would have the patience to read this far anyway?), but I say it primarily because I am acutely aware of people like yourself putting so much effort into your KZread uploads and I feel you deserve more ad revenue for your efforts. I watch the ads for the channels I subscribe to, and I wish more people would be willing to turn off their ad-block for their favorite KZreadrs so they (you) can get paid for their efforts. 30 seconds of commercial for 102 minutes of entertainment is a pretty good deal for the viewer. I'll get off my soap box. Thank you again, Chris, for making this terrific video. I've watched your Baldur's Gate and Fallout uploads and look forward to watching your recap of The Evil Within 2 after I complete my copy. Keep at it, because your content is some of my favorite. Seriously, you deserve more subscribers and revenue.

    TEW2 feels like the embodiment of a checklist of things from TEW1 some executive told them to 'fix' after people complained about them in forums, ignoring what anyone actually liked about the first game, which may be my favourite game of all time. In an interview from round TEW2's development, Mikami made an off-hand comment that he wanted to work with a smaller publisher next time, then said he wasn't sure if he was allowed to say that and couldn't talk about it more. _That's not suspicious at all._

    Yeah same. Though I do like the second game's hardest difficulty a bit more (only 7 manual saves and no autosaves), or would if it wasn't a constantly crashing mess. It's not fun to lose 3+ hours of gameplay to a crash multiple times in a row. And that chapter that starts with you in a small cabin where you can easily be stunlocked to death by bad rng The animus (the ghostly thing you get the classic outfit from) sequances were cool I guess

    Would the fact that Myra is wearing gloves with the Mobius symbol on them as opposed to a STEM scar (like Kidman's palm for example) simply point to the fact that Myra is working/leading Mobius as opposed to having been in STEM before? Like you mentioned, the lack of any reference to Myra's consciousness in STEM or Ruvik using her against Sebastian would strengthen that thought

    This was a good video, I really liked it. , but there were a few mistakes made. You can actually kill the sadist your first time facing him, it just takes a lot of time and mastery of how monsters can loose track of you in certain situations. I believe there is a trophy for it as well as an in game reward too. There also is an alternative way of fighting the giants, albeit, it's not very well communicated. Dotted around the arena are lamps that you can shoot to burn the giants. However, the only time it is communicated is in the very beginning when Joseph accidentally shoots one. Granted, this doesn't seem to always happen, so I can understand missing it. That being said, Alpha also has a secondary way to fight him. By running to the other side of the car park, and hiding behind pillars, he completely looses track of you and has to use a giant eye tentacle to find you. When he does this you can get MASSIVE damage on him with a flash bang. He can also be frozen during one hit kill mode making him trivial. Also, I'm confused about your experience with the quell boss. I've fought him three times (Having gone through three times) and all three times he had situations where he would use his stealth ability to hide in plane sight... and flash bolts WOULD indeed reveal his location like you suggested. Also, also, yes the "Kidman killed Ruvik's brain" ending is a joke. Shinji is known for having things like that in his games... Same goes for the Executioner just being a fun distraction minigame, much like mercenaries mode in Resident Evil, and I don't agree with you being unfun. I do have to disagree with you about Seb's momentary transformation not fitting. They strongly hint at something being up when Ruvik finally corners him in the elevator and spouts on about Seb being his puppet, then vanishing prior to that scene. The anagram Hermenez mentions in Ruvik is "Ruben (Ru) Victoriano (Vik). That aside, if you look into some of the things revealed about the evil within 2, it looks like they've fixed pretty much every single thing that was either unpolished, or just out right not okay in evil within. The combat, leveling system, item distribution, stealth, all seems improved in some way.

  • @ChrisDavis_Games

    @ChrisDavis_Games

    6 жыл бұрын

    Without wanting to sound overly defensive, I'm not sure every you list is really a mistake. Good point on the giants fight. Joseph definitely didn't shoot one of the lamps in my playthrough. I wonder why not? That sounds like something vaguely scripted, so you'd think it would happen all the time. I fought the Quell boss twice and all I can say is that he never did that with me. He only ever "hid" in the pipes. Now, that said, I found this fight by far the easiest in the game, so perhaps he just never lasted long enough to properly go through all his phases. Still, it seems a bit odd. That should be his primary hiding mechanic. Glad you enjoyed The Executioner DLC, but don't forget that this "fun distraction minigame" was a separate piece of paid for DLC and came with the season pass. It wasn't a freebie. On the Seb point, I don't agree that the reference to being a puppet is in any way related to the transformation. The haunted are not really Ruvik's puppets. They're just twisted creatures. I don't think he controls them. Could be wrong, of course, but I think connecting those two events is a stretch. I've not looked too closely at all the sequel content because I prefer to go in blind, but I agree with you that it looks like a big improvement. I'm looking forward to playing it.

  • @LeonomusPrime

    @LeonomusPrime

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah, you're right. I started to ramble on about certain things after pointing out the couple mistakes you did make. Those being the boss situations. As for Ruvik being the one to control Seb, I kind of took it that way, because when Kid shoots Ruvik's image Seb goes back to normal. Maybe "puppet" wasn't a good word for it, but it did seem like Ruvik was the reason for Seb changing, and it seemed ruvik knew he could cause this by the way he spoke to seb in the elevator, though it IS just speculation. I still stand by what I said about the executioner DLC. I don't mind paid for DLC being just a fan distraction or a new game mode, but that's just me, especially when said game mode actually has effort put into it, and is fleshed out. And, as for quell I do really agree with you there. Every time I fought him it seemed he'd only ever go into that stealth mode outside after being forced to hide in a pipe at least once... I think it should have been his main maneuver too.

    I should also add that Nightmare difficulty isn't just Seb and enemies taking more damage but they actually change the layout of some areas, adding more enemies, different enemies, or more traps. Case-in-point; The Ruvik clones appear as early as Chapter 3 on Nightmare (whereas it's Chapter 11 on Survival). The invisible enemies DO reappear in Chapter 14 on Nightmare difficulty too! This is a great way to make the game more difficult while also keeping things fresh. More games should take this approach to difficulty.

    The tentacle boss does become invisible and hide in certain corners and walls of the arena besides the obvious the ceiling holes, it's very similar to the Octopus fight in MGS4, except it's more based on RNG and position if he'll use those stealth locations instead of 100% scripted. Honestly, you really need to replay bosses a few times from a save to truly see the depth of their moves, they have a lot more than they let on at first. Plus with the max upgraded crossbow bolts and survival difficulty, they just die too fast to show off.

I watched this because I'm actually in the midst of making a similar video/write up, and this is definitely the most comprehensive one I've seen yet. While there are very few things you say in here that I wouldn't fully agree with you on, I would just like to bring up one: You seem to be under the impression that Ruvik is responsible for the version of The Administrator showing up in Kidman's DLC, but I seem to remember him actually revealing to her at some point that the shot she gets in the beginning doesn't only shield her from becoming a Haunted, but it also "inputs the Administrator within STEM" without him needing to be hooked up to the machine. I'm fairly confident I remember that being revealed to the player, gonna have to run through it again to make sure though.

    As a fan of survival horror I think the game is a masterpiece. Many of the criticisms such as the 5 matches, 3 second sprint time and the low ammo are creative choices to make the game more difficult and thus more tense. These can all be upgraded but at the cost of green gel. This gives the player another meaningful choice as they choice what to prioritise with the upgrades.

    I agree with some of your points, the game is unpolished, inconsistent(sometimes). However, I don't agree what you said about stealth part of the game, the stealth is supposed to be hard and only possible when there are very few enemies. That's not a bad part of the game. If you can casually stealth pass a section of the game, it would become Metal Gear Solid. You have to worry about the bombs nearby. Also, even in the first few chapters, you don't need to stealth if you know how to apply the best strategy. The strategy part is the best part of the game, every encounter there is a good way to deal with, every boss has its unique weak point, in my opinion, the strategy part of this game outshines every other horror game. Also, nightmare and akumu are definitely unique experiences, you cannot found out how strategic this game is unless you experience them. If I want to give a fair review of this game, it would be 3.5/5. However, the strategic part is so amazing which gives this game so much replayability. In fact, this is one of my most played singleplayer games, I put a countless time to study the behavior of the enemy and how to deal with every situation.

    A few points I want to mention: 1.Eye icon only appears in survival and casual mode( Again means this game doesn't want you to do too much stealth. 2.Invisible enemies still show up in late game, but not in survival difficulty. 3.You talk about some strange design of this game( low sprint time, can't carry too much ammo), but they all served the purpose of this game. That's not something to criticize. In Halo 1-3, master chief can't sprint, in Re4, Leon can't move while aiming. These are strange design, but not something to be blamed, they are part of the game and makes the game amazing.

    There actually is a trick to the fight with the 2 Giants. If you stay in the hiding spot in the middle of the arena where Joseph is standing on the wall, they'll be enraptured by him and stand there while he shoots and kills them. It takes a long time for Joseph to do this, but the end result is that you don't use any of your resources in the fight. This is an especially useful "strategy" when playing on AKUMU.
