The Ether Tells Stories | Advanced tutorial for Soma Labs Ether V2

Музыка

Soma has extended the Tutorial Competition until September 15. The idea is to create a unique and original tutorial for any Soma device. After September 15 the voting begins and the winner gets the Cosmos. You'd need to mobilize your own social network to vote, so it's not really fair. It sounds a bit like a Russian election. Here's the link:

Since I already have a 'Cosmos', I am not competing. However, I made my first Ether video 3 years ago and haven't touched it ever since. Not good. It was too much trouble taking it out with a field recorder, hoping to find a device that would buzz and tick or maybe receive a pirate radio station. It was not for me. I started this video as a joke (sorry) because Ether doesn't need a tutorial. It was supposed to be a bit ironic, making it look much more valuable than it really is.
This is more like a tutorial for myself, a 'learn as you go' and 'what's with all the stuff you bought and never use'. It wasn't easy to commit to hours of terrible noise, hiss, buzz and high pitched frequencies. I ended up with severe headache when the video was done. The most important lession from this tutorial is to slow down your recordings. Bring it back to something we can relate to like the wind and the ocean waves. We can't figure out whatr's on a 1 Gigabit Ethernet cable unless we run it through a computer and make it audible, readable or visible.
It's not just Ether. It's all Soma gear. For me the reason is simple. I have a modular channel so my focus is on Eurorack. If I'd like to play Enner or Lyra, I need to make room, hoping to find the adapters to power it, and look up old jack cables to hear anything. And then... I need to check the manuals again because I never developed any muscle memory. I never extended my creative vocabulary. So they often speak Russian to me and I don't understand any of it. But I truly love these machines, especially Terra.
Hooking it up with the modular opened up a Multiverse of designer noise. There's always new ground to cover and always something to learn. I'll post a message when the voting starts and I am looking forward seeing what the community came up with!

A very useful joke! I bought mine second hand and have not really been sure about how to best use it. Thank you.

I love this video. You know I am an absolute fan of your work and for me every video is a class to learn something new. Being a user of the ether... I see in your video the same emotions I felt the first time I used it. You have my vote completely!

Really nice. It lends itself nicely to ambient dark noisy stuff.

I've never really made much use of my Ether V2, but this video has helped inspire me to try more things with it. "Expect nothing and be happy with everything" sounds like one if the Rules of Lomography. I'm starting to think of the Soma as the Lomographic camera of synthesis. Thanks for the video.

Damn. You've discovered an entirely new world that we didn't know existed... It's like our past is hiding right in front of us... Super cool exploration. I have a couple of 'glitch' machines where I try to emulate these sounds. This however seems to have nailed it. Great job.

Wow, Thank you David. I still think there's more to discover by adding a few loudspeaker wires or maybe there's still a TV wire T- antenna on some obscure online shop. This will not be the last video of Ether.

Good job. I too got a splitter for mine so I could listen and record at the same time. I use a Zoom digital recorder and sometimes a battery powered reel-to-reel

“Expect nothing and be happy with everything.” - Possibly a good rule for life, maybe change “everything” for “anything”. This video is a masterpiece of sound and vision. It has won the Internet for me today. I love it.

Yes, you're right that was a language gap between English and Dutch :). I learned this from a classical horse trainer who was Spanish and probably had a gap between Spanish and English. Anyway, I am happy the message came across. It's about letting go of expectations and being happy with anything that remotely resembles a result or a sign of progress :).

Ex gf called it a “device for telling if the lights were on” (hence ex) 😅 Fun to monitor the end of patch cables coming from the Wogglebug’s oscillator outputs; also neon lights generate some awesome bass.

Bro, do you even Hainbach? Nicely prepared, by the way. If they award points for 'qwirk', you gonna be a winner.

Nobody does Hainbach better than Hainbach but he often inspires me with his degrading 'whatever' adventures. I tried to recreate his 'wire recorder' a few years ago and I got his VST's. I am more a copycat and let him do all the real work. kzread.info/dash/bejne/d52nubh_n7azcbg.html

I got one when it was released. Originally bought V1 but it was broken and was replaced with V2. It was fun for couple of weeks but couldn't get anything useful from it. It give interesting sounds but I don't know how to make them useful. Just like with all the other Soma devices I have. I even went out side and recorded video with it like it was cool to do at the time. Haven't used it for ages. Maybe I should try it with eurorack. This gave me some ideas I could try with it.

Put it near your engine computer or other CAN modules while you are driving and run the sound through the car stereo.
