The ESEE Jaraca Kukri Knife Review and Balance Test - Sharp Saturday

It's been a while since I did a Kukri knife review so a big thanks toe ESSE Knives for sending me this Jaraca kukri from their EXPAT line of knives. I put it through some pretty intense abuse in the Balance Orientation And Rotation Device testing but it "stuck" it out.

    Nice! We've always been a fan of the Ontario khukuris- one of the better value options for cheap western kukris. It has a lot more traditional features than a lot of other blades on the market. It's interesting to see the same pattern getting produced by another company with a few changes. Not going easy with it with those throws either!

    I have that kukri and like it but my only kinda complaint is that I prefer.the kukris that kinda have what amounts to multi grind or at least multi angles like the condor heavy-duty kukri .on the esee the thickness behind the edge is thicker closer to the handle since the flat grind has less room to tapper out than the wider front. To me.its opposite to what it should be . I'm sure for cost reasons . This one is great for chopping and machete tasks but if you want a one tool option get the condor. Condor is better at the fine close up carving because the closer to the handle its less convexex so the angle is steeper while out front its more convex almost axe like. That being said most knife nuts like myself aren't taking just a kukri so does it really matter? Up to you.

  • @kailashblades

    @kailashblades

    Ай бұрын

    Agreed that it's good to have a nice lean grind next to the bolster for carving. However this area is also a lot thicker on traditional khukuris also. I think it's important to reinforce the blade at the tang transition here so that it can stand up to heavy chopping. Having a narrow blade here helps to get the right angle to the recurved portion for chopping.

    I have this and the handle is pretty uncomfortable. Probably woulda been better off with Ontario version with the rubberized handles. Once I took a file to it its OK. But it's cooler looking than it is a functional kukri. More of a thick kukri shaper machete in my opinion but it's OK no huge complaints.

    If I remember correctly, Condor produces those for Esee. Why on earth would they use that terrible handle design from Ontario? I dont think using wood will change the way it digs into your pinky finger just like the ontarios did, fix the handle design and use micarta while keeping the same price, and maybe I would get one. I'm not saying they should reinvent the wheel, but why copy a horrible handle design when it can easily be made better. It's a pass for me in its current state, and im sure many others would agree. 🤷 Thanks for showing!

I wouldn't pay $110.00 for it with 1075 and a wood handle , you think Esee would have made a Better Handle Design for it , especially since it Most Likely their Design anyway and I'm sure they heard all the complaints ...... 👍🖖

    I have seen a number of your videos over the years, and you always seem to be having fun with the blades you review. You should be mindful of how you present these products and what you say about them, keeping in mind there are plenty of newbies and inexperienced enthusiasts watching and being influenced. Regardless of disclaimers (which most people ignore) you are still influencing purchase and use behaviors, so it would be good to have a more informative and honest approach, informative in terms of proper use of the products and honest in the sense of saying the truth about their quality. Kukris are weapons, they were made to chop and slash flesh and bones, not wood, and they are definitely not for throwing. Kukris are actually rather uncomfortable an even dangerous for bushcraft, even though you may find plenty of videos of so called “experts” using them for wood processing and general bushcraft, but if you understand blades and bushcraft you will notice that all struggle in various ways. You will be much better off performing the same chores with an Esee Junglas or other similar large blades that may even weigh less than that Kukri. I am also disappointed to see this rip-off from Esee, as this is the same exact blade as the Ontario Kukri, and I am sure they are made in the same factory as Ontario used, with the exception and a drawback that these use a wooden handle, the edges come dull and it is not easy to sharpen the recurve for less experienced users. That sheath also sucks and is dangerous, as any other nylon sheath without proper inserts for rigidity and protection. The geometry of the Esee/Ontario Kukri is incorrect and differs from the original/traditional Kukri geometry, making it worse instead of improving upon it, unfortunately. For the western world and western customers Kukris are a marketing hack and a complete gimmick. It is sad to see Esee putting their name on this blade. Regardless of a free blade or whatever money they may be paying, honesty is vital. Cheers!

    You do realize that Jeff Randall was a designer for many of the knives Ontario produced, such as the popular RAT series, which actually stands for random adventure training. So I don’t know for sure, but it may be extremely possible he was actually the original designer of this style Kukri.

  • @wismods

    @wismods

    11 күн бұрын

    @SurvivalOnPurpose I do know that, and maybe Jeff did design the knife for Ontario, doesn't mean anything I said in my comments doesn't hold. Jeff also designed the RAT series, all of which had mediocre handles, which he later improved on the Esee, though he was pumping out the old handles for over a decade. We all learn as we grow. Esee still makes some mediocre knives, not all of them are good, but this Kukri is a marketing flop just to grab money from unsuspecting customers. I come from one of the oldest countries steeped in tradition of war and self-defense. We have a variety of very affective bladed weapons (often had to fight enemies in 1 to 10 ratio and won), but none of these weapons were or should be used bushcraft or survival. Kukri is a weapon for killing and decapitating, and the Ontario / Esee example is a bad geometry, not a traditional Kukri geometry. Do you believe Jeff knows more about an optimal Kukri shape than the Nepalese people who have been making them for thousands of ears and actually using them for intended purposes? I will be making a review on this Kukri soon and will share it with you once uploaded, I will explain why Kukris are misunderstood and misused by various brands and how the desk / backyard bushcrafters are being mislead into throwing money away.

    Knife testing is a joke. Just about every knife survives the tests and most testing constitutes abuse of the tool. Batonning should be avoided unless some unlikely situation presents itself ( being stuck somewhere with no rotting deadfall yo gather and bust up for fire and no way to whittle a splitting wedge from wood. ). Throwing your knife is certainly not sensible. Trying to break the point off proves....what ? Nothing. Even if we leave Joe-X out of this, knife testing videos are unrealistic. I expect soon to see heat resistance tested with an acetylene cutting torch and rust-resistance tested by dipping the knife in salt water and leaving it outside for a month. If you want rugged, choose a knife with quarter-inch thick blade and be done with it. And boycott China !

  • @billmelater6470

    @billmelater6470

    7 күн бұрын

    I mean, if a tool can be proven to stand up to abuse, then it will certainly stand up to what it's intended for. I really am sympathetic to your view but having something stupid durable has always been desirable since humans made tools, so I can't really fault it. For example, if you could go back in time and tell people fighting with blades that they could hit plate armor with no edge damage, they wouldn't say "No thanks, that's just blade abuse anyway". Otherwise I am with you that all the space age steels really aren't necessary. Something in 1075, 5160, etc., properly shaped and treated will be more than fine for any type of woods work. I ignore abuse tests until I need a tie breaker. Otherwise, testing as a whole isn't a joke. My only problem is with reviewers that don't really test, they just go out and hit stuff. I've bought my fair share of useless steel slabs based on "good reviews" and finally found what I've been looking for only recently (shout out to Kailash blades). Side note: Even Kailash tests their blades by chopping horn in their QC process. They could easily just chop green wood and go "see? works good, right?"
