McCall (Denzel Washington) has put his mysterious past behind him and is dedicated to living a new, quiet life. But when he meets Teri (Chloë Grace Moretz), a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can’t stand idly by. Armed with hidden skills that allow him to serve vengeance against anyone who would brutalize the helpless, McCall comes out of his self-imposed retirement and finds his desire for justice reawakened. If someone has a problem, if the odds are stacked against them, if they have nowhere else to turn, McCall will help. He is The Equalizer.

What I love about this scene: The room becomes a chessboard, and we're shown all the pieces in play as McCall methodically notes each piece's position and available moves as he formulates his countermoves and end game - even as he is conflicted - while the tension is allowed to build. When he finally springs into action, there are no surprises -- just brilliant execution (pun intended).

So many small things adding up to something incredible in this scene. Two things that stood out to me outside of the badass fight choreography and overall drama was McCall timing himself (realizing he had slowed down just slightly with age) and at the end when he said "I'm sorry." He was apologizing to his dead spouse, who he had promised that he would leave this kind of work behind. Small things that inform about a character add up to a stellar performance.

@@wendyrosen3179 I agree with your last sentence, he seems a very admirable person. But I don't know if I agree with the idea that he's one of the best actors of the generation. I think people confuse his screen presence (which is powerful) with being a great actor. To me, he pretty much just plays Denzel Washington in every movie. That character is always strong, brave, capable etc, with a clear moral compass. I couldn't imagine him doing a comedy role for eg. Or a role like John Nash in A Beautiful Mind. Have seen this part more than 50 times. Its a perfect scene. But for those characters who simply were unaware of the person standing infront of them I feel little time should have been given to them to understand what hit them & the regret of not taking the money he offered. Safe for one dumb premise, that the entire fight scene hinges on. And that would be him walking into the middle of the room, completely banking on the guy with the gun walking up towards him, like a dog with a stick .... instead of just remaining on his ass and shooting him in the back. Don't get me wrong, it is a cool scene. But as far as the methodical bit goes, it isn't. Unless we consider blatant plot armor a method.

The most terrifying part isn't just how routine it was for him... but the timer. He estimated 16 seconds was all it would take to neutralize all threats, and he ended up with 19 seconds of combat, and was like "eh, I got a bit rusty, too slow." How used to fighting do you have to be to be able to do be able to estimate that? Special forces and SWAT are the only ones who would do those kinds of intense room clearing training, but even they can't just estimate their split time like that on the fly based only on the observed situation...

Same here, struggle with Tv shows but this has been great
The actual fighting is just a 1 minute affair...but that buildup and intense acting ranks this 9 minute scene amongst most badass fights scenes ever
This really is one of the most satisfying revenge scenes on film. He tried to be civil. And they didn't take him seriously only to regret it immediately.
Definitely my favorite actor he tries in his movies to teach what is right and wrong. RESPECT!
This is one of the most badass scene in history of movie. 1. His acting is crazy 2. He kick ass with 0 effort 3. coolness and intensity
Denzel Washington is just a good dude all around ! Him and his wife were at some event and an interviewer ask him who he voted for ! Denzel , flat out told her " none of your damn business " !

@@benb7111 I’m saying that Denzel stands tall for his beliefs. The BLM zealots stole the money from well-intentioned blacks as well as sellout whites, thinking it could virtue signal them into more street cred. What has BLM done for blacks? They burn down cities, trample the constitution, and attack cops. Black owned businesses were destroyed in these so-called ‘protests’ for justice. You think they give a damn about Floyd? They wanted blood and they found a legal excuse.
When he opens and closes the door is so creepy, this movie is a masterpiece.

He is top drawer mate and Training Day should have been his second best actor Oscar, his first should have been for "The Hurricane". I expect we're going to get some absolutely brilliant performances from Denzel now he's into his mature phase of his career because this is the phase where great actors are called in for serious roles over pop culture roles.

Nice to see you consume plenty of your country’s propaganda. Good for you
What I enjoy with this film is 4 things: First, asked for Alina's freedom. Second, Mr. Mcall gave him $9800 which was a direct warning to Slavi to give Alina's freedom. Third, Mr. Mcall moves the glass skulls to Slavi and his crew. Then finally, Mr. Mcall shut the door 4 times which is the last warning Slavi.
He shouldnt have let his last moments be so peaceful. (Eye for an eye style) Denzel voice on the way out is a blessing

it's a fun action movie and all that usual stuff, but it's the little things that separate one from the rest. for me, it's two moments in this scene. firstly, when the threats have been spoken and negotiations are at an end and robert quietly turns the face of death toward each man by rearranging the skulls on the desk. whoever thought of that is an artist. that's just some gangster shit. as a viewer you're like, oh damn. secondly, is when robert sits there and talks to him while he suffocates slowly about why he's dying and for what. that was like robert was actually taking on the role of death.

Hands down the best actor ever! If I could be one actor it would most likely be him!
I know full well it is a movie but it applies in real life too, be civil with people because even though you may think you're a badass you never know who or what your dealing with, even the person who looks normal can be more lethal than you gave him credit for.

Actually there are events that play out in front of us that cause us, like the criminals in this scene, to pause to try and comprehend what they think they are seeing and react. Not so different from our disbelief at a car or train crash or a violent event that happens right in our faces.
No sure how many time I watched this realistic fight scene, and every time it looks new! Looks like I like this fight scene, as I want nail down my life problems and challenges like this.
Never, never underestimate an old man even if he retired from the CIA
I knew he was OCD but wow, even closing the door 3x and setting his watch?! That is very interesting. Almost like he’s setting a set amount of time into killing for the sake of the greater good. He takes his role in “equalizing” as part of his OCD where he can’t allow someone to be hurt/raped/used/ without intervening and treats the process as such. LEGEND
