When traveling you can bring anything if it is in your checked luggage but yes it’s best to check with the airlines. When we went last year I carried my project with end stoppers and my interchangeable needles in my bag. They asked if there was anything sharp before sticking their hands to check but I told them it was my knitting needles but they weren’t sharp. When we went abroad, I took my wooden interchangeables that were not as expensive as my chiagoos. All my socks use only 1 skein since I do toe up. 🙃

Congrats to Elsie for winning the sock set! I just returned from a trip to Spain and had no problems, domestic or international flights, with any of my needles. Most of mine are 5” steel tips and they weren’t even mentioned going through security. I do know you need to be careful with scissors that have blades of 5” or longer. The only time I have had any troubles is flying from Mexico to the US. They don’t like any knitting needles, so I choose to crochet and once had a steel hook taken.

Love your podcast! We travel quite a bit within the United States. I always bring knitting WIPs, and haven’t had any problems. My bag only got stopped once for a “different” shaped crochet hook. It was ergonomic- so the thin hook coming out of a plump handle through TSA off. Luckily I got to keep it since they realized what it was. I no longer bring that one with me! I do try to have my knitting needles already in a project. Safe travels!

Regarding flying. I travel quite a bit both domestic and international. I have never had any trouble on any flight. TSA is in charge of all domestic flights, so your airline will just refer you to them. The only thing I would caution is scissors. Try to take itty bitty snips or break your yarn with your hands. Anything else is A-OK. I even take my precious Signature needles on projects and never have an agent look twice at them. Amsterdam is the only airport where they looked a little closely at my knitting. Enjoy your travels. P.S. Yes, single skein projects would be awesome!

Down here in Arkansas we’ve had an early spring but it’s been erratic. Seems to be settling in now. Gorgeous sweater! I think a single skein bundle would be nice to have. As for travel, I’ve heard stories of needles being taken at security even if the airline said they were allowed. And where they’ve made someone knit to prove that was why they had the needles. Since you’re traveling in the US you will probably be fine. Personally I don’t take my good needles on board. Just bamboo, inexpensive ones or shortie sock needles. Also I’ve never had a problem with a crochet hook, so maybe crochet on board and knitting in your bag. Have fun!!

Great podcast Amber. I’d love a special podcast on single skein projects. I have an entire bin of sock weight yarn and won’t live long enough to knit that many socks so any suggestions you find would be greatly appreciated. Also, I’ve traveled by plane a lot the last few years- often to Europe, etc and have not encountered any where that I couldn’t take my knitting. I usually try to carry 39:58 39:58 small projects in my carryon and take foldable scissors and wood needles. Check ahead to be sure. I think it’s always on the airline website. BTW. I fly 5 or 6 times a year within the US and never have problems. Last week I had a sock on 9" 2.25 mm metal circs with matching dpns in my purse. I also had 3.25 mm metal circs and caked yarn for two baby rompers in my carry-on. I went through security in ATL and STL and no one asked questions. Now, they still take away big scissors (4" blade) so I only take snips or my clover yarn cutter. I also try to avoid taking big projects or long straights because the seats are so close together.

Tips for air travel that make sense to me: Even though knitting needles are allowed by the TSA, it is up to each officer for anything they deem potentially dangerous. So, if you're afraid that they might take your needles, there are always mailboxes there in the airport, so if you have a self addressed pre-stamped envelope to send your needles back to yourself, then you may need to purchase another single circular set on your trip, but at least your not losing your favorites. I bring needles that I wouldn't cry about if I lost, but that's just my lazy way of dealing with it. I've traveled a few times in the states with my knitting and the agents just always asking what I'm making. (I think their test is that if the answer is a gush of love for the current project, then the passenger is really a knitter. 😂)

Would love a podcast focused on single-skein projects! I have so many single souvenir skeins. I've flown domestically and internationally with projects (mostly socks) on wood DPNs, wood circulars, and 9-inch metal circulars and have never had any issues going through security. Good luck and have fun!

We adopted our two children from Russia in 2003. Both of their birth mothers are Ukrainian. As far as plane knitting I take wooden needles. I have taken my Chiaogoo needles as well knowing someone from TSA make take them. TSA will be your problem not the airlines. Hope that helps.

I love blue, and your new shawl with the blue mohair is beautiful! I fly frequently in the US and have not had a problem with taking knitting needles and blunt safety scissors through security. However, if it makes it less stressful for you, just take a crochet project through security. I’ve never heard of TSA having any problems with crochet hooks, and even if they did, you can just give them the hook, but your project is still intact.

I would love to see an episode for single skein fingering weight projects. I have a lot of indie dyed yarn & don’t want to use all for socks. Love the blue on your sweater!❤. As for flying with your knitting, I haven’t had any problems in the USA with having my knitting with me. I always have a project or 2 started & in a project bag inside of my carry on bag. If you take scissors make sure they are under 4 inches. I also print out from the TSA website that knitting or crochet is acceptable to take on the plane. My hubby & I will be flying on Saturday to Seattle to visit our son, D-I-L & 3 grandkids. Have a blessed week.❤

Single skein yarn projects - yes please. Also maybe 10g and 20g mini skeins. When I fly I take cheap wooden needles for the flight and put my proper needles in my suitcase. Then if they take the wood needles away from you , you still have your knitting. I also take a holding cord to put stitches on if needed. If you crochet use a plastic hook and a safety pin for the one loop.

Yes, to the single skein episode :) The color blue looks great on you and makes your eyes look even more pretty. The airline has nothing to do with the needles it all depends on the TSA Agent. I have flown many times and never had an issue with my needles. I want to say, i dont think you will have an issue either.

@@ColoradoKaithat is exactly why we never sprayed any of our yards! It is also why we never used any of our dandelions in yards next to neighbors that did spray because I didn’t want to take the chance that some chemicals landed in our yard. When we were in the country, it was a fun thing to do with my kids when little since they always wanted to pick them anyway!

You can fly within the USA with your knitting needles and project. If you fly internationally, the flight FROM the USA is ok with knitting but your flight back depends on the TSA of that country. Canada is ok, some countries in Europe is not. As far as I know Mexico isn’t either.
