Bit unfair to compare this car to a 300bhp golf R of today’s standards!, I could compare the golf R to a Nissan GTR or something! Not fair really?? This car was released around 01 and at the time kicked every other hatchbacks behind! Animal at the time and still is now! As for the low torque U get a car that actually revs! I mean who wants to be racing round a track between 2k and 3k revs! Get up on 8k in the vtec! Good video tho! And a great car!

People don't realise the low torque gives great fuel consumption which is the pay off. You're right that you would only ever compete in the high revs. I've raced so many 'superior' cars on b roads and none of them could shake cos I keep it in Vtec. I'm talking about AMGs, Boxters etc. Yes a 3.0 deisel A4 took me on a long straight but as soon as we got to a bend, destroyed it. It's an epic car!

Vtec conundrum is easily solved by downshifting. I love going on trips with my ep3 for the joy of downshifting the car into vtec and passing other cars. You have to enjoy using the shifter to enjoy this car, if you expect turbo driving style you will think it's crap.

You really need to drive the 1997-2001 Civic Type-R, or the Integra Type-R from the same generation. They had double wishbone suspensions that look an awful like the what you see on the S2000, Mercedes C class, and Jaguar F-Type, with a steering rack that produced excellent feedback. This was right up there as Civic/Integra's greatest feature, on par with the VTEC engines. I'm sure you know the benefits of double wishbone on a B road, as your Lotus uses this to maintain the proper camber while still allowing for decent wheel travel. If the tires as a left-right pair maintain better contact with the road, the need for a limited slip mitigated until you reach higher cornering G's. Plus, cars to date have shown that the best designed double wishbone/steering setup will always have better steering feedback than the best strut+steering combo. The EP3 is lighter and more toss-able than the FN2, but the strut suspension it uses was not well developed. Base model through Type-R Civic's and Integra's had upper and lower control arms with the same geometry, except the Type-R received lighter stamped steel control arms instead of solid bits. I suspect the Integra has a more rigid chassis, but otherwise they are very comparable apart from spring/damper/sway bar choice. So I'd compare either of these to this EP3. This was an amazing suspension to be found on a base model economy car, and not cheap to make. What the EP3 had over the previous gen was better rigidity that came with the move to MacPherson struts, and the smoother K20 engine. Since a double wishbone suspension doesn't add rigidity, more rigid construction is needed vs a MacPherson chassis, this is why the mid-late 90's Integra Type-R's were seam welded, braced, etc. This EP3 suspension was a regression in terms of making the Civic a better drivers car, but a necessary one to save room in the engine bay, and thus have room to expand the cabin. Honda had to compete with the Corolla. Things like driving character are only appreciated after prolonged ownership, while quieter and roomier cabins are obvious on the showroom floor, and... not to mention... lots of economy car buyers are indifferent to driving character. The K20 added secondary balance shafts that spin at twice the engine rpm to cancel vibrations, versus the older B18C. It also added variable camshaft phasing, up to 50 degrees, for better grunt below the VTEC engagement rpm. Smoother and more powerful, what's not to like? One more regression that started with the EP3 in terms of being a driver's car, though less serious, was the transmission for the K20 uses a cable shifter, instead of a rod linkage, and the feedback is a bit more buffered and not as detailed. It is still a great shifter, but prior generations gave detailed feedback with the slightest pressure applied towards a gear, making it instantly obvious when you had your rpm synced up. Bottom line, drive one these! I enjoy your commentary, and am curious what you think of my favorite generation.

Awesome! My experience with these cars are why I am a stickler for double wishbone driver's cars. Detailed, textured, feedback, and lightness, are more important to me than outright power and grip. Older Civics and Integras also had hydraulic steering, unlike the S2000, but a similar front suspension. I'd be curious what you think about steering feedback and feel vs the S2k. Obviously these are "wrong" wheel drive and lack the power in comparison, but this is the one element where I suspect they have an edge over the purpose built S2k. I see Lotus as the least compromised in terms of feedback, lightness, and balance, of all enthusiast cars available within a "reasonable" budget, short of moving up to a McLaren 570, and am subscribed to your channel because I hope to own one day.

It costs money, but if u put caster plates, roll center adjuster, bigger rear swaybar, and lsd, u get really close to the eg/DC chassis behavior. My ep3 trackday car is alot better now with these parts and alignment review/improved. The only downsize is that requires alot negative camber at front, around - 3,5 to - 4,5 degrees

I've got the Type S with the K20A3 (160 bhp) where VTEC kicks at 3500 RPM, it's actually just perfect for overtaking. But most of the time I don't have to rev over 3000, there's enough torque to drive in normal paste. It's good fun though to floor it in 2nd gear coming out of roundabouts and see those fancy beamers disappear in the mirror after tailgating me with their bloody fog light on :D

Iv got an EP and my dad has the FN2, although i prefer the EP because of the lighter chassis and fully independant suspension i have to disagree about the ride quality and seating position, i feel like the EP is a lot more harsh on bumps and speed bumps compared to the FN2, i used to have to crawl over them with the standard suspension cause if i went slightly faster it would crash the car down and jump you out the seat, the FN2 is still a firm ride but i never feel anything like that when iv been in his car, also the seating position defiantly isnt high up and the seats are soo much better aswell

Every body says the fn2 is crap! I've just bought a 09 face lift in silver I think best colour imo.jus over 63000 miles fsh fantastic handles totally fine. Yeah can be hard on certain roads but nowhere as bad as what people say especially Mr Clarkson, Stig loved it! Gear box sublime as all type R should be. Sounds great in vtec and there is plenty of torque below the beast. Just getting used 2 the car but it does disappoint. Doing 70 in 6th even lower speed put ur foot down and you can pass over cars easy. I will keep it a year and then start to modify it. People who have never driven one need to try it first. Last of proper type r NA they will beco

I wondered what it was going to be when you said there'd be a Civic Type R review soon! Great to get your opinion on the EP3 - I'm vaguely in the market for something like this and had been contemplating the FN2 but had some serious reservations when researching about the ride quality. In terms of packaging it's very clever (huge boot) but if it can't smash a B road because the suspension is too stiff - what is the point! Seems it might be better to get an older EP3 - decent ones are going to be a future classic for sure.

EP3 owner here.. good video, nice to see a new video on the car that isn’t all about the stance / boost life. The seats on this facelift are exactly the same as the prefacelift apart from the red coloured insert, I don’t think you made that too clear on the vid. I also wouldn’t say the ride is as comfortable as you say but then again mine is a bit leggy, and I’ve never been in an FN2. Yep theres no torque, hence why you have been provided with a great gearchange instead. The car is definitely one that is more rewarding when you drive at 9/10th and above. It’s certainly quick enough for the road and I find it punches well above its weight on track. Its even got heaps of playful lift off oversteer if you want! Keep up the good work

Shame modern hot hatches aren't more like this - we bought a Fiesta ST last year and I just can't get on with it, to the point that we use our tatty, 10-year old, 100bhp, Fiesta Zetec-S in preference to it. Its everything that the Civic Type-R of this generation isn't - it rides poorly, torque steers all over the shop, has back achingly terrible seats and feels lackluster when you try and rev it out. The whole thing is held together by its stability system as well - switch it off in the cold and wet and the 'agility' of the chassis that many people praise turns into an incredibly nervous rear-end which means twitchy mid-corner oversteer followed by exit understeer as you get back on the throttle to balance it out - not nice at all! Doesn't help that the ePAS means you're totally reliant on wheel slip and chassis movement to gauge grip either, as the steering is completely numb.
