A lot of times I cover all possible common issues with the customer in the initial communication and let them know further issues could be present and a lot of times you wont know until you get into the job. That way you cover your butt and avoid any surprises to the customer. No one is perfect but we quickly learn communication is key in this industry! Good work brother.

If you was in a shop setting im sure you would have checked. But in a parking lot its not practical to complety tear down a vehicle to diagnose. then having to leave for parts with it in that condition. You also have to watch for collapsed rubber lines on the caliper. If the bleeder won't come loose I break the line loose. If caliper pushes in its the line. I know Matt knows that but maybe help a viewer. Believe me I have been in your shoes. The many trips are a pain. O'Reillys are great people to deal with.

Thats the life of the mobile mechanic, I feel that struggle. You did everything right aside from not checking both sides, but even then if you visually checked both sides you wouldnt have known the caliper is siezed. In my shop the first thing we do during a brake job is push that piston in after everything has been torn down. You could have spent the time to clean everything and the last thing you did was push that piston in. That would have sucked. You handled it well. lesson learned.

Not that my opinion is worth much, if anything, but I have gotten into the habit of replacing the brake hose when a caliper fails. The reason behind this is that, because I refuse to not completely know why something fails, I have always captured the brake fluid in a clean container and about 85% of the time a caliper has failed, I have had rubber chunks or powder in the fluid. Followed up by removing the piston on the first 30 or so I replace and found piles of rubber jammed in behind the piston, causing it to stick. Does that mean it is always the hose? Absolutely not. Is it worth it to replace the hose while you are there? 100%, every time. Even at an additional 50-100 dollars, it is worth it to not have another caliper needing to be replaced next month and have a customer satisfied with my work and continue to call me when anything goes wrong. Might not be right for everyone, but it is right for me!

Then zip tied the rubber part of the brake hose to the side of the strut thats going up & down in traffic! I hit the brakes hard & my pedal went to the floor. Thats when I pulled the wheel & saw what he did. He raced competition class on the weekend so he was fully aware of what he did. It wasnt a mistake.!🤬

Also learning from my shop using channel locks to see if the piston is seized is better cause the techs have seen pistons move with those clamps but still have the vehicle come back with a seized caliper. For them I usually use infrared thermometer if they not heat too much.). But still You did a great job to be honest with customer and trying avoiding unnecessary things. From what I see on websites car parts for sale, especialy most new OEM are crazy cheap in US compared to my country in Europe (Poland). Many times half price or even less. Recently I checked some Ford engine and it was $2500 in US and in Poland like $6500+ And also in my country it's mostly illegal to work on your car on the street unfortunatelly You can get fine from city police if someone snitch you.

Frozen / leaking calipers are always a possibility. That's just brake jobs. I always tell people I could find other issues once I do a full teardown because of the rust and corrosion issues. That vehicle is not safe even after the brakes are done.

I had to pay for the mistakes they made at the Honda dealership. I went for a overheating issue, they said it was the thermostat, but it turned out to be another sensor because of the fan. So I had to pay for the new thermostat, coolant change, sensor 1, sensor 2 and another coolant change on the same freaking day within 3 hours.

Respect for owning up to your mistakes, my thing is if you tell the customer that you will start on the job and its possible there might be more issues along the way you would've covered your ass. Also i hope you didnt pay for the calipers just ate the labor. Props

Its a tough call. You could have retracted the calipers with a flathead like you said and that probably would have been ideal but then you would also need to get in and pump the brakes afterwards to reseat the pads every time you do diagnosis because otherwise you risk the customer getting in the vehicle and rolling the car through the neighbors house if the repair isn't done the same day for whatever reason. 😆😆
