The Enlisted Pilots of SEAL TEAM 6 | The DEVGRU Files - Episode 6
Ойын-сауық
During a SOFREP exclusive interview, Dick Marcinko recalls one of the most controversial moves during his time developing SEAL Team 6: turning his operators into pilots. He leased commercial aircraft and sent his operators to flight school. Due to obstacles related to jurisdiction and bureaucracy, having the in-house capability of flying was paramount to the team and their counterterrorism mission.

We will never be able to repay what Dick Marcinko and Charlie Beckwith have given us. 🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿
Thank you to the creator (Brandon Webb) of this series for getting Demo Dick on the tube. And thank you Mr. Marcinko for a lifetime of service to our nation, my condolences to the Marcinko family.🇺🇸
Rest In Peace, Cdr. Marcinko ... you set the bar incredibly high and you continually found people who could actually clear it. Well done, sir! :)

Love or hate him he had the vision and drive to create a unit like no other.
A true military legend that will never be replaced or copied.
He was the reason I joined the military, this man was the tip of the spear and the sharpener of said spear..I never even imagined he could actually die..I guess Valhalla was lacking real discipline.
The poster child of the unsung heroes. Truly thank you for your service.

I remember those days, They where insane but satisfying. Best 5yrs of my life with the Dev Gru.
Legends don't die. They just fade away. He and Chesty are causing an uproar wherever they are...
When I was in the Navy, opinion was split 50/50 on Marcinko. Those of us who think outside box support him while the folks who only knew to do what they are told believed the smear campaign against him. We need more leaders like him!
I had the honor of meeting Dick at a book signing in the early '90's...he was a true class act as well as one badass gentleman!!!
Read “Rogue Warrior” By Richard Marcinko. Was IMO a great read, and shows us all what our own government can/will do to you, if you don’t dance to their tune. RIP “Rogue Warrior”. I salute you sir.

An interesting point - after reading all of Dick's books, was his consistent battle against established bureaucracy. The key point of light, asymmetric warfare is speed and flexibility. Being able to actually talk to the person on your left and right and making decisions on the ground. Dick developed "6" to get around these obstacles.

With any 'SF' organisation, there will be a butting of heads against the systems in the rest of the military. I don't have 'skills', but I was qualified as a storeman, and if a guy came in and asked for something, we would check the books and paperwork to see if his grade and position entitled him to have what he was asking for, so yeah, if someone wanted a tin opener and he wasn't a cook, he would (as far as an ordinary storeman is concerned) need to go back empty handed to his chain of command to get a bit of paper signed by someone very close to the Almighty before he could have it. And if he wants it on a Friday afternoon, well, just cancel the war! Clearly, 'SF' organisations have to have work-arounds, maybe including a debit card and the ability to get what they need from the local shops.

But the reality is and was… the established bureaucracy doesn’t want people in the field making life and death decisions. And ‘they’ likely went after him for what he did. Who is ‘they’?… it could be anyone in the government that doesn’t like something and abuses their office to attack people doing something they personally don’t like. Yes, ‘they’ don’t like decision makers, unless ‘they’ are making the decision. It is the same through out the government.

I have never read a book of Dicks, which means nothing. Dick decided that SIX would fool USSR into thinking there's FIVE more Teams. Simple like that.
The man is a National Treasure. I grew up reading his books, and later went into the Navy. I was too old, and not fit for Special Warfare. I fit to fly them on my commands C-130s at beautiful Point Mugu, CA. Only a few minutes from Coronado.
Re: the amount of ammo they used for training; my story below is about Delta but as Mr. Marchinko details, SEAL Team 6 were in similar circumstances. I was asked to attend a DOD budget review on the hill as a technical expert if any questions came up about a weapons platform I won't mention here. The Congressmen were going through the budget asking some questions now and then and then it stopped and there were some murmurs amongst the congressmen about a particular like item and then things got going again. After the session was complete, I asked some of the Officers who were sitting around me what that had been about and one told me it was the Delta Line item for ammo...in other words they used so much ammo it had to have its own line item in the DOD budget (a recently retired Ph.D. Aerospace/Computer Engineer who worked 37 years for a large American defense contractor's Aero company.

I believe that once the civilians make the decision to use military force, then the military needs to be left to do their job. Even if it ruffles the feathers of some people. You can't do battle with one hand tied behind your back.

I'd like to hear more about "Red Cell" and the installations they "checked". When I was working at a Defense Contractor in Southern New England in the mid '80's I'd heard a rumor in the Yard about a group 'breaking in' to the place and leading their Security Force on a wild goose-chase throughout the yard some places in there were highly Classified installations that they gained entry to, and they got back out, and were never seen again...after recently hearing about 'Red Cell', and what their mission was, I have to wonder if it was them that gained entry then? Were the rumors accurate?

Worst thing for upper ranks is those on the ground who are more qualified to make off the cuff choices as the situation changes. If it’s not written down on paper beforehand, brass tends to go nuts with script changes.

I wonder how many "Stuffy" staff officers he jammed up in his career developing the team?
Most of the pilots I know are not even enlisted. Only to the American military bureaucracy would that be an issue
Also captian of us navy red cell.
Yeah, this guy was a thinker.
I really got ugly looks from officers when filing flight plans at the air stations… and how I got the ‘that guy’ name… I was an enlisted E-5 black shoe that was a fixed wing and helicopter pilot…. I would wear a flight jacket and flight suit just to hide my rank. The pilots were mad that I wore brown flight deck shoes too… they had a saying, don’t be ‘that guy’ a black shoe wearing brown shoes. So I took on the name… yea, I’m ‘that guy’ 😁

OMG, enlisted pilots, I bet they knew how to fix it also not having the choice to walk away and call back to home base for enlisted to catch a commercial flight to the location to fix it.

This is the thought process required during any peacetime period. You never know where the next threat is coming from so have to establish training and protocols to be extremely flexible. Top brass hates this shit, even though they should be the people driving it, cause it messes with their ambitions of politics etc. The whole "Enlisted guys flying planes" things gets to me too. What? You mean only officers are intelligent enough to fly? Here in the UK, the Fleet Air Arm and RAF will only allow Officers as Pilots (NCO's can be non-piloting aircrew members though) whereas the Army Air Corps allows NCO's to become Pilots, cos they ain't so far up their own asses as a "Toys for the Boys" flying club.
