The Enigmatic Ancient Ruins of the Khmer Temple 'Beng Mealea', Cambodia

Beng Mealea is one of the most mysterious temples at Angkor in Cambodia. The temple lays in ruins, mostly unrestored, and the jungle has taken over it (hence also known as the "Jungle Temple"). It is not mentioned in any of the Khmer inscriptions despite its large size, but it is considered to be built in the early 12th century. The temple is located about 77 Km northwest of Siem Reap.
The Beng Mealea temple complex is on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
Recorded February 2024 in 4K Ultra HD with Sony AX700 and DJI Pocket 2.

Б л а г о д а р ю...!!!

Beautiful temple complex, wonderfully filmed and shared as always. For only being estimated at 1100 years old, it is a curious wonder why so little is known about this period and its decline. Looks much like quake damage, but I assume also those trees have applied pressure to structures and walls collapse . Thanks for taking us places we can’t go.

Cambodia is a country with many historical places and it has been part of many kingdoms and empires but the khmer empire left an important legacy,i had read about Angkor Wat but i had'nt hear about this place,i'm from Costa Rica but i like to investigate about the world, the most ancient civilization came to Cambodia in the first milenium a.C with the immigration of the brahmins from India, however, before there was a kingdom called "The Funan Kingdom",it was founded in 68 a.C and it ended in 550 when it was conquered by Chenla, the funan kingdom covered the south of Vietnam,Cambodia and a great part of Thailand, also,it had two religions, the hinduism and the buddhism, its capital city was Vyadapura, today known as "Angkor Borei" and less known than Angkor Wat. After the Chenla kingdom conquered and defeated the Funan kingdom and in 550 and it lasted until 802,the Chenla kingdom covered an area similar than the area of the modern Cambodia, this kingdom had 4 capital cities. After these kingdoms,Cambodia changed with the Khmer empire that was founded in 802 a.C and covered Cambodia and some territories of the modern Thailand,Vietnam,Laos,Myanmar and Malaysia,it had border with the Srivijaya kingdom that controlled parts of Indonesia, the founder was Jayavarman II and it had capital in Angkor Wat,today,it's Siem Reap to the north of Tonle Sap Lake, the empire fall in 1431 when the Ayuttaya Kingdom invaded the Khmer empire,it is called the fall of Angkor, the Khmers had been invaded in many occasions,in fact the arabs killed a khmer king and they founded in 1342 the Bengala sultanate that covered Bangladesh and Burma(Myanmar) and with the maritime trade they could arrive to Malaysia and Indonesia and they expanded the islam to the Indo-Pacific region. After the fall of the Khmer empire, other important period began, the Post-Angkor Period that lasted from 1431 to 1863,during this period Cambodia had a terrible decadence because the Siam Kingdom,a tribe from China that got away from the Mongol invasion was became in a powerful kingdom and there was a war called "The Siamese-Cambodian War" between 1591 and 1594,now the Siam kingdom had became in the new rival of the Cambodian people, during the next years they had wars with the Siam kingdom,in fact,a Khmer king asked help to the Luzones from Philippines for military assistance because they didn't want to be added to Siam or Vietnam, and this period was terrible, they said: Is better to be an european protectorate than be invaded by Siam or Vietnam, before, the Luzones were mercenaries during the siamese-burmese war,and when the Cambodian embassy came to Luzon the rulers thought in send their soldiers and the soldiers imported from Latin America together, that was how the christianity came to Cambodia. In 1863 Cambodia was became in a french overseas territory when they founded the french Indochina that covered Vietnam,Laos and Cambodia, the french rule lasted until 1954 when Sihanouk,a Cambodian prince proclaimed the independence and took the govern of Cambodia, but this govern wasn"t good because the war in Vietnam affected Cambodia and after,in 1967 began the Cambodian civil war that lasted until 1975,there was a genocide supported by United States. Since the end of the civil war Cambodia had have many changes but it is a poor country.

Thanks for your history about Cambodia. I am Khmer and learnt some history too. What you said is mostly right but I have never heard that Arab king killed my King. Also the genocide was not supported by the US but supported by China and North Vietnam instead. The US supported Lon Nol regime which was toppled down by Khmer Rouge and North Vietnam. My dad and many members of my family lost their lives during the genocide because they were Lon Nol armies.
