    The fact that the speedo drive unit is serviceable just shows how mechanics back in this era of cars thought differently. Instead of disposable "just replace the assembly" thinking, which was my reflex, we have a level of craftsmanship and frugal thinking. Amazing work, keep the videos coming!

    Yeah back when things were built to be repaired. The speedometer in my 1999 GTV has stopped working and it's down to some electrical fault in a sensor and it's no longer manufactured.

    @@duckylucky6505 oh yeah modern production QC and consistency is definitely far superior but it’s all usually assembly-based, which means the consumer cost is less for the craftsmanship/specialty labor and more for the parts and spelled out repair procedure. I consider Jethro's videos to be extremely well filmed and produced - most likely more effort in filming/producing the video than performing the actual restoration work. The only other KZread producer that I consider to be on a similar level is Soup Classic Motoring, however it’s a shame that Soup does not feature Alfa Romeos. However Soup's current project is a Lotus so I'm now hooked. Look forward to future videos that feature the wonderfully patinaed Giulia 1300.

    Back in the day I recall reading that the classic alfa 5 speed box used 3x synchros for 1/2, 3/4 and 5/... gears. The idea was that you could swap the 5/... synchro with the 1/2 synchro and the usual weak synchro performance on 2nd gear would be solved for free.

    Love watching your videos - so calm and everything done in a controlled manner without haste and none of the shouty-shouty and preaching of many other content providers. Awesome that you restore the cars of my youth in the country of my youth. I miss both my father's Giulia Super, TP 4192, with 1750 motor and a few other mods, that I had access to in my late teens and early twenties - that was an awesome car and was purchased from Dawie de Villiers just days before he opened Glenwood Motors in Pretoria, plus the powder blue Alfetta 1.8 saloon, GWY 985 T which I purchased from him later. The latter was a rust box though, built by AR in the Brits factory, while the Giulia Super wasn't (built by Datsun in Rosslyn). Will be looking out for your valve-train reset video - that's a job I did with my dad a few times! Thank you for filming your hobby.

I installed a dash cover to cover the cracks since it was off but I can't install the dash until after I put the upper and lower sump back on. I was chasing an upper sump oil leak. Just a thought, to save yourself time later. Use brass nuts on the exhaust studs , much easier to remove later. Stay well stay safe.

    Yeah that’s a good idea, although finding brass M8x1 nuts in SA is pretty difficult. I know I can change the studs to M8x1.25 but the risk of breaking one is quite high, and then you have quite the ordeal with getting that broken stud out the head.

    The joys of old car ownership. You can tell cars that are owned by mechanics, they always have a laundry list of items to repair...lol. (I'm guilty as well) It's cool that you have a nice stash of spares to use as replacements when you need them, Jethro. Porco is going to run better than ever once you get finished!

    One thing with these engines which you have to watch closely are the rubber parts between the carburetors and the engine. When these gets older they start to crack and when they leak they will kill your engine (one or more cylinders running too lean).

    Good stuff Jethro! My experience with that the front oil seal is that it still leaks oil after the seal replacement, and a speedy sleeve installed. it will only leak when the oil level is above the "N" on "MIN"...once it drops to that level, no more oil leak.

  • @alexbrown1995

    @alexbrown1995

    That would be infuriating, a leak after a speedy sleeve and a new seal. I suppose you could always run 90 weight oil.....
