I only heard of Shakey’s because of that episode of South Park where Cartman used stem cells to make a new one

I live in the Chicago area, I was on vacation in LA last week and finally saw my first Shakey's on Sunset Boulevard. I had heard of Shakey's before but only because my parents lived in the San Francisco area.

Shakey's Mojo Potatoes were just incredible as a kid. There was nothing else like them and I haven't seen anything like them since. Thanks for the memories, Shakey's.

When I lived in Colorado Springs back in the 70's, Shakey's was the place for Pizza. They also had Godfathers Pizza which was just as delicious😋
About 10 years back I was in Sacramento for my employer. So, I was eating on their dime. There was an Outback and Red Lobster across the street from the hotel, so I decided to find out who did steak and lobster better. The steak was better at Outback, the lobster better at Red Lobster, the bar good at both. I would like to thank my employer for funding my scientific test, sorry to see both in trouble.
There was the last Quizno's in the Baltimore area and not far from my old community college and i just checked and now it's a Wingstop.

There’s still one in Louisville, KY that still does well. It’s busy as shit during lunch.
I don't know why Outback does so well. Texas Roadhouse has better steaks at lower prices. I believe Longhorn too, although there aren't any in my area.
@Deamons64

Longhorn is aggressively salty. Outback succeeds because its a bit more than a steakhouse, and it has a big brand identity

Roadhouse is way better and is always super packed and they are fast and there’s good value. They seem to prioritize volume. I’m positive that outback’s have way less overhead and require less to open and operate so they have way more locations. Advertising and the fact you can find one anywhere. Tbh I would go to chilis or roadhouse instead but I have some memories at outback
Shakey’s is super nostalgic for me, my dad took me there a bunch on his night to see me after the divorce.
Ah yes, my favorite restaurant, POND steakhouse (0:12). Great video 👍 I think you could do a similar type of video on stores.

Their mashed potatoes used to be just about as good as homemade. I got the potatoes for years and then they stopped making them the same way the quality went down and the gravy didn't taste as good so I stopped going. They just closed up the one I always went to. It was there at least 20 years.
I ate at a Ponderosa in Chambersburg PA a couple years ago. A blast from the past!

I love your Restaurant themed videos! I would love to see you do a video on the unfortunate decline of Max & Erma's Restaurants.
In my hometown, 3 of these buildings exist and are occupied by different businesses. The old Sizzler building is behind my current apartment and is a Chinese restaurant, Shakeys is a marijuana shop, and the old tasty freeze is a chiropractic clinic.
You should do a video or former stock exchanges that have since been abandoned. It’s interesting what happened to them such as the Pacific Coast Options Exchange in San Francisco.
@firebird6522
Ай бұрын
That would be interesting.
I did eat at a Sizzler in Flagstaff, AZ in late 2022, uncertain if that one is still in business as of now, if the clientele stays the same being the 65+ crowd, then it doesn't have much longer.
Another channel did a whole run down of what happened to Quiznos. When bought from the original,owners a conglomerate took it over. They started selling more franchises and then decided to raise the prices of all the things they needed to run the store (napkins, cups, wrappers etc…). Thing is the conglomerate owned the producers of the materials needed for the stores. Franchises could not make the necessary profit after being screwed by their own company. To make matters worse they did nationwide sales and adverts with cheaper meals at the same time charging the franchises higher rates. Typical corporate greed bullshit, short gain profit taking. Red Lobster has had similar issues with its own conglomerate screwing it over. Quiznos at its height was way better quality wise then most sub places like Subway and Jimmy John’s and on par with your Firehouse and Jersey Mikes.

Aww no mention of Backyard Burgers? They used to be big in the late 2000s until they started closing doors fr the early 2010s onward. Loved their waffle fries.

The last two in the Kansas City area closed in May.
These all bring back memories of my childhood. I never ate at any of them other than Sizzler, but ads for these restaurants were constantly on TV back in the 1990’s and saw the signs of their locations while going on road trips .
For your next video, you should do Druthers (formerly known as Burger Queen). I’ve eaten there for years and where I live happens to have the last one in existence!!
Q subs at its end in Ontario would operate with one person in the store, like most dying chains, to serve monster lines of potential customers. Who would walk out …
Omg that opening shot is the Boston Market on Coral Way in Miami! I live right by there and drive past it all the time. Was super sad when it closed :(
Quiznos didn't die due to "ignorance". Their corporate team deliberately squeezed their franchisees for short term gain. It was never meant to last, but make a quick buck off small business owners.

You are right another video on KZread explained the whole thing quite well.
Tastee-Freez is so interesting as being in the Northeast but listening to country, I've heard them mentioned in at least a few songs(also in Jack & Diane). When I found out we had one of these in Bennington, VT, I made the 2.5 hour drive just to go there. It was fun. It's now called The FREEZ but still has the originally signage, I believe. There are also a bunch that are listed as Tastee Freez but not listed as a frachisee. I wonder if they just allow these places to keep the name in case of a resurgence...
McDonald's has a strong foothold in the ice cream fast food market?!? Color me suspicious considering the machine situation...
A plaza in my town still has the stone Quiznos table in front of a store
I love this series

You have a great voice for videos :)
Loved Shakey’s mojo potatoes. In the early 90’s I was a delivery driver for Pepsi and delivered to two Sizzlers. They lost their charge privileges so they were on a cash basis, meaning they could pay with cash or check. I would always deliver to them after lunch when they were less busy and had money to pay.
I don't know what Quiznos this narrator went to but I absolutely loved their sandwiches.
@seththomas9105

IKR. Quiznos back in the 90's and 2000's was damn good. WAY better than Subway.
Don't forget York Steakhouse. Only one remaining location in Columbus, OH. Now up for sale.
We had a Sizzler and Shakey's in the little city I grew up in and a Ponderosa around 5 miles away.
Fazoli's?
As a Midwest Gen-Xer Tastee-Freez and Shakey's were part of growing up. Shakey's was the BEST chain pizza, better than even classic Pizza Hut. And there were TF "huts" in little towns everywhere.
I remember when Jackson rancheria casino had a taste freez Delicious soft serve ice cream. Loved it
I still go to Shakey's whenever I visit Southern California. Still pretty good!
I ate at a Quiznos once, it was the first and last time. I recall it being something between a submarine and a sandwich on burnt toast.
@nonfatalfonso
Ай бұрын
i went in one before and the smell of burnt old bread made me leave
Sizzler was huge in Australia until the late 2010s, every one of me or my sister's birthdays we'd go there and get salad bar and icecream from the nozzle
If Subway was Coca cola Quiznos was Pepsi. Used to see them almost everywhere.
A Google search shows some discrepancies, possibly. Tastee-Freez only lists 4 location, all spread out. But Google shows a handful more, with the same branding. Also, the one in Milton, FL was called Saucy's as of last year on Google Street View. And many that are on Google but not on the website list have the Tastee-Freez website as the contact. Granted, those are user input data, but I really wonder what is going on with the true number and how many are actual franchises currently.
Do Twistee Treat next
I feel like dog n suds has been forgotten about, at there peak they had over 650 drive in locations, now they are down to just about 10.
Sizzler is the choice of America!!
I remember Tastee Freez was on every corner in Chicago... Their ice cream is alot better than McDonald's... What does McDonald's have? Just the Oero MCFlurry and 1 special limited edition MCFlurry 🙄 and that's it
Next do endangered or near extinct retailers.
Link part one and two!
I haven’t seen Roy Rogers’ in a while.
Quiznos got super expensive, was before inflation hit. It was good at the beginning.
You failed to mention that the Tastee Freeze Ice Cream products can be found at 375 Wienerschitzels and Original Hamburger Stand
I really can't fathom why more people don't figure out they can buy french bread, dressing, deli meat, and vegetables themselves and not pay $12 per sandwich. Then we wouldn't have to see the blight of all these silly sandwich shops.
@Fred-uc4eo
Ай бұрын
Following your logic there is no need for any restaurants anywhere, ever..
@justinb2824
Ай бұрын
@@Fred-uc4eo No, I'm saying a simpleton can make a sandwich. It takes skill to make a Beef Wellington, or a good pasta dish. Foods from different countries also need a lot of niche ingredients that you wouldn't have at home. Plenty of reasons to go to any restaurant that isn't just...you know...bread cheese meat condiment bread.
Also, you may not get a ton of followers into this, but you'll get a good number of Boomers and Gen X into a road trip to York Steak House. Used to be big in the northeast and tied to malls. I was going to do a day trip to Columbus, OH to go there from Providence, but Breeze Air changed the flight times that day and it didn't allow me to go at all. I was gonna do a day trip to see the very last York in existence back in May. Make it a video.........
I used to love Sizzlers.
There is a Quizno's in Vancouver, Washington. I went up there to eat, but unfortunately, it made me sick. Shakey's was a big part of my childhood. I miss them. Jimmy John's is hella overrated.
