The End of Universities? | EP 185

Yeonmi Park's account of her experience at Columbia University is harrowing - as someone who had just arrived in the West after her escape from North Korea, the idea that she had to censor herself at a prestigious university like Columbia, or any university for that matter - which have historically been bastions of free thought is horrifying. Her experience serves as one example of just how far the Universities have deteriorated.
#Universities #UofColumbia #ColumbiaUniversity
Dr Peterson wanted to put this together because he still feels like it’s possible to save the Universities, but before that can happen, more people need to be aware of just how twisted they’ve become. Feel free to share and reference this video as some evidence and perspectives on the state of Western Universities.

    Traditional lecture is a HUGE ego boost to the instructor. Students raised in passive learning from all-wise lecturers insist it's the way they learn best. As a long-time professor, I believe 2 things: Traditional lecture is grossly inefficient, with the tools and on-demand availability of knowledge, and students confuse being entertained with best learning. Still, some professors DO put on a helluva show. Put those talks on video, and use "professors" to answer questions.

Through my own observation and experience, the real problem is stemmed from the institution itself rather than the students (who thankfully are demonstrating much common sense). I expected the classes to have a lot of propaganda on Chinese history and exceptionalism, but they didn’t. It was all straight-to-the-point, technical material. When he said this, I immediately thought of my college classes. I have said so many things there that make me hate myself. I did it for a grade because let’s be honest, we all know that speaking your mind will affect your grade. But once I betrayed my values and what I knew to be the truth, I would relive what happened in my mind over and over again. It’s like my brain was so scandalized that I said such a stupid thing and was showing to to me so I could learn and never do that again. I have rarely been so ashamed of myself as I am when I lie in my classes because I’m scared of the consequences. I'm worried that many parents think, "Yeah there's bad stuff on campuses, but I think MY kid can handle it okay and still gain some advantage in life from going to college." Setting aside the discussion of how much actual benefit there is anymore, parents need to realize that a university campus is not just separate and distinct from the real world. It's an arena where all the advantage is held by administration and faculty members to control the experience of 18 to 22-year-olds. As a Graduate Assistant at a 'relatively conservative' public school, I've been given many 'training sessions,' and I've sat in on a few online video conferences, 'discussions', etc during COVID; and I can tell you that actual strategizing occurs, and research and studies are shared and supported (even between institutions), seeking ways to more effectively radicalize students and enforce/reinforce the ideological purity of the interactions that students have with faculty, staff, and administrators. These people know what they are doing. They are motivated by a belief that they are saving the world. My advice to parents and prospective students would be to consider a path for kids that avoids traditional higher education, if not entirely, at least until they are a bit older than most undergraduate students, and then have a targeted approach to get what is necessary to reach further goals. If you have children in college now, even online, talk with them regularly about their experience. When doing so via phone or device, it may help to suggest that your child take it to a private place where they feel comfortable expressing themselves freely. Ask them if they've found any like-minded friends or mentors, but remember that you are their number one source of support. Finally, It is common for students struggling against indoctrination and hostility to feel like they can't escape - like they have to submit until they get the degree. Perseverance is a virtue; and some students may find opportunity to make positive change. But enrollment at a school is not a marriage. You're buying a service for your own benefit. Just like bad relationships and broken laptops, sometimes the best option is to just dump it, keep the memory, and seek a change.

  • @krulak292

    @krulak292

    You're absolutely correct. However, one sad thing is that it doesn't start in university now. It starts even younger, even in elementary school. A lot of teachers nowadays are starting to politicize schools, thinking they're saving the world, as they said. They're just confusing young kids who don't know any better, who get shaped by the people around them, so if a teacher and a few of the kids friends are like this, they will most likely start thinking similarly, unless discussed deeply with their parent. We should overall just encourage parents to get way more involved with the school program, a lot of teachers nowadays don't even know what they're doing. The future is bleak if this continues. You know what they say: "Bad times create strong men. Strong men create good times. Good times create bad men." and it goes on and on on repeat. We're at the "good times create bad men" part right now.

    There needs to be a cost for being a radical leftist in the same way there's a cost for being a Nazi. Two sides of the same path that lead to the Abyss. These kinds of people need to be resisted and challenged. These woke SJWs who forward ideas like critical social justice, critical race theory, neo-marxism, communism, need to be met with the same distain and seriousness as their Nazi counterparts. Their ideas will lead us to mass atrocity if not resisted and challenged. Example: In my own life, as someone who employs people I make sure to do background checks and if you have anything on social media (and I check back at at least 2 years) that suggests you are a leftist political activist, you are disqualified. I do not need the hassle and I do not want to endorse, support, excuse, toxic political ideologues and the useful idiots and activists that support them. I can, and always do, find someone just as good/better to do the job. A difference of opinion is welcomed, but crossing that bridge into activism and endorsement of what amounts to barbarian philosophies and frameworks like CRT, Nazism, Neo-Marxism, Communism is where lines need to be drawn and people need to be told their ideas and actions are inappropriate and wrong and that if they continue they will be met with firm resistance and pushback that will cost them socially and in my case economically.

    I attended different colleges as I got my masters; I can say that she is spot on. The universities are full of religious minded professors that promote group think and do not push critical thinking. Humanities and Social Sciences were more like sitting in a church and learning a religion. It is honestly the opposite of liberal as the campus is full of intolerant, out of touch, coastal elites.

  • @TheExvh

    I think you are getting ‘religious minded professors’ and ‘like sitting in a church and learning a religion’ as a testament to what most Catholics have experienced with the Novus Ordo mass. (Post Vatican 2). Yeah, there is a problem with how the professors think, but why do you correlate that with how people do “group think,” as you say? I presume that it’s because of the rise of secular type thinking, to put it more clearly. I myself have seen what it’s like to be sitting in a church and trying to understand my own journey with Catholicism, but what I think you mean by, “sitting in a church and learning…” is that that the Novus Order mass has failed you, and you are right. What going to mass is really about is receiving grace, but I’m getting ahead of myself as this last sentence will probably be enough as explaining why you should receive ‘graces’ is too long for here.

    I think the equivalence falls short since most college professors especially at liberal institutions are astute atheist. That kind of indoctrinated thinking comes from the religion of science that doesn’t even entertain the arguments religion has for reason. It really depends in which university and in which country you go. I recently followed a course at university in Europe about American culture, and I was annoyed during all the semester that the course mixed history with woke/sjw propaganda. For the exam I wrote an essay about how wrong I think following identity politics is for everyone, quoting various black and gay intellectuals who don't go with the woke narrative (like Thomas sowell or Douglas Murray). I got 19,5/20 for that exam, the highest rate among 400 students. Most teachers (at least in Europe) might be oriented in the way they teach, but are open to actual critical thinking, as long as it is intellectually strong and coherent. What Peterson says might be true to some extent for north america, even though I have friends who study in the USA and shared similar experiences to mine.

I was surprised you were unaware of how benzos are almost always a slippery slope. Like modern journalism /media, the universities and medical professions, drugs are pushed on to people and people lack the fortitude and analytical thinking to be their own health advocates. This same methodology is part of the mechanic at worth for people who seemingly are so willing to give up their freedoms. I truly appreciate your impact on humanity, especially over the course of the past ten years. Your lectures on the Soviets is so important to have out there. I imagine the only reason why those are not yanked off the mainstream is because it takes intellect and focus to comprehend what you're speaking of. It is not a simple Twitter headline to banish. It is history and esoteric. Speaking out to a lost generation of youngsters, giving tools to these kids who have been influenced by social media for most of their lives, and possible under the influence of mood altering meds for just as long, is a perfect storm of society headed towards destruction. Maybe it could be said these kids suffer from a sense of neglect due to a lack of parenting and love. Thank you for this terrific video.
