The End of Asian Arowana Fish Farming in Singapore? Ho Li Tropical Fish Farm

While in Singapore, I had the opportunity to visit the Ho Li Tropical Arowana Fish Farm. For many fish keepers arowana are some of our favorite aquarium fish. They are revered as Dragon Fish in some cultures and a prized pet and one of the most expensive fish in the hobby. The large scales, beautiful colors, their gracefully meandering through the water, and how many will interact with you is some of the reasons for why they are favorites. Asian arowana are significantly smaller than their South American Silver Arowana cousins, but are larger than the not as colorful, but just as amazing, African Arowana. I visited With Gerry Yap and beside feeding me, Thank you again Gerry, he gave me an excellent farm days before the farm was to be closed and the land returned back to the Singapore government. When I left Singapore at the end of 2022, he was uncertain about the future of his and other Asian Arowana fish farming operations on the island.
Gerry Yap gives a tour of Ho Li Tropical Arowana Fish Farm in Singapore, where they breed and export the endangered Asian Arowana species to China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The farm has been breeding the arowanas for over 25 years and has gained extensive knowledge about their spawning, behavior, and water quality needs. Arowana fish require clean water and sunlight, so the farm uses outdoor ponds with no artificial filtration, but uses water plants to balance the water quality. The brooders are carefully monitored for reproductive health and the babies are tracked using microchips to comply with regulations. The farm mainly focuses on breeding the arowanas, which is the most difficult part. The tour shows the baby fishes developing colors and discusses their diet and breeding season. The farm's expertise and practices are regulated by CITES to ensure the safety and conservation of the species

What will be sorely missed are the expertise and knowledge in setting up and running breeding arowana operations that work. Very rare things to have today, when everyone wants to be a video creator instead of arowana creator.

It will definitely be sad, but all is not lost as long as the shop stay open and continue to bring all those beautiful arowanas to our shore and overseas.. Please continue to stay positive and persistent.. Hopefully very soon more youngsters and the new generation will start to appreciate the beauty of the Asian Dragon Fish! Hope to visit Uncle Yong and the team soon to show my support before the shift to the new location.. Cheers and all the best..!

It was fascinating to see Arowana in a pond environment. Hopefully, next time I go to visit I can do a follow-up video.
