I was asked recently: how much time should be spent on validating assumptions (on experiments). And, of course, the answer is "it depends"! In a new market with a new product, the experiments may be near 100% of the effort; trying to find the product-market fit. In you have an existing product-market fit, then the experiments should be risk based. In other words, what's the risk of getting features / capabilities wrong? And, of course, "wrong" is a spectrum. There's spectacularly wrong where the value to users is negative--it would take away from your value proposition. A more common "wrong" is from a user experience / usability perspective--the functionality is there (e.g., the algorithm is correct) but it's hard to use or to understand the results. Finding better ways through A/B testing (a form of experiment) may be worthwhile. In existing product-market fit cases, experimentation with 10-50% (or even more) of the investment might be beneficial.
