Brand new viewer here, loving it so far! Just got to the part where you're talking about something being valuable because it was first. Wit has a discussion with some guards in Stormlight about this exact thing :) "Given two works of artistic majesty, otherwise weighted equally, we will give greater acclaim to the one who did it first. It doesn't matter what you create. It matters what you create before anyone else"

Really love this book, so it's nice that you're discussing it. Before reading it, I had only read the Mistborn trilogy and Elantris, and Emperor's Soul was included amoung the Elantris-adjacent stories in Arcanum Unbounded, so I just decided to read through it, why not. It was probably the most I've been positively surprised by a book in a long time, besides maybe only Secret Project 1 now. My favourite thing is the very obvious insane polish that this has, compared to stuff like Stormlight or Mistborn, with a more obvious focus on themes, emotions and the character arcs, so that every single page is just a fest to read. I really hope he writes more great novellas, and I also really hope you guys make more great podcasts!

I (Richard) can't wait to receive the physical copy of secret project 1. I also felt the same way about the emperor's soul, such a polished gem.

@@2ToRamble Oh, I have the digital version of SP1, and it's great. If The Lost Metal hadn't been great as well, this would've been an even bigger surprise, but this book is one of the most creative Sanderson books yet.

Still catching up on your 'back catalogue' :) This was an unexpected discussion - I had assumed it would just be about the novella - which was my first foray into the world of Brandon Sanderson but your discussion about 'ownership' of pieces of art / heritage / history / literature was very thought-provoking indeed. I don't think Austin should feel bad for not having a particular view on this issue - it's actually really complicated and messy. The boring legal perspective would be that ownership / rights to dispose of assets can be clearish if there's a legal arrangement: - works created under contract / during a contract of engagement or employment - works that are now heritage / treasures and protected by law so even if you 'have' them in your possession, you can't actually destroy them. For instance, people who own heritage houses / have protected trees on their property. They may 'have' them but they're not allowed to do things to them without getting permission But there's also a whole bunch of murkiness that has always bothered/troubled me. I remember a teacher I had whose husband was such an esteemed academic that after his death, she was required to hand over all his love letters to her to give to the university / a museum. She was allowed to keep copies, but the originals were considered such works of historical / academic significance that they were to be given over to the uni/museum. The famous author Georgette Heyer used to destroy a lot of her drafts / old manuscripts and from memory, she had given very very clear instructions that after her death she wanted certain drafts / stories destroyed. Her family published them anyway for whatever reason - maybe money although the argument is always that the fans wanted to read them. When I read posthumous publications of private letters, diaries, incomplete works - especially when I know the creator did NOT want them published, I always feel a bit of a guilty pleasure. On the one hand, it's fascinating and amazing to get an insight into their thought process but many creators do NOT want the incomplete/early version out there. Sanderson's a bit unusual in his release of his 'prime' versions of various novels. A lot of other creators feel like the rough scribblings take away from the final product. I also feel a bit weird sometimes reading private corro / diaries even though the person is dead and I often feel grateful that I'm not famous and that after I'm dead, no one will feel the compulsion to poke throughmy private corro and documents. There's also the posthumous release of unfinished / discarded versions of musical works that the creator would not have wanted out in the world but get released post-death for money and to allow fans to have more of their idol. We're in a much more secular world now so most of us don't crave reliquaries containing fingers and other mummified body parts of saints, but I can't help wondering if pawing through the works of beloved artists after their death isn't the equivalent of wanting to own Saint Whoever's fingerbone :P

Lovely book club style dissection on themes. I’m a physician and when a decision is made medically speaking by giving consent it is context and time dependent. I think in the case of the Mona Lisa, there is so much time elapsed that the instructions from Da Vinci would not account for the cultural significance of the Mona Lisa, he might well make a different decision if he were alive to see it’s impact!

I need to read this book still. However I did finish the powder mage trilogy and picked up the rage of dragons again after your guys video. I very much liked both series. Very excited for book 3. I just started the blade itself and just got to part 2, however I still don’t know what the plot of this book is, so that is somewhat discouraging to me. Other than that the blade itself is pretty good.

For me the ending brought everything together in the blade itself. I'm reading the second book as well and I think your concern is mostly solved there. Also congrats for reading so much.

So far "The Emperor's Soul" is the only work that I love from this author. I abandoned "Warbreaker" and I felt lukewarm about "Yumi and the Nightmare Painter". I loved the art by Aliya Chen, but the humor and Hoid's narrative voice were so grating.

Because we started in the middle of the month we are doing a novella that anybody can read pretty quick. It's called "All Systems Red" the first book in the murderbot diaries series. The day of the live book club will either be the 28th or the 29th.
