Note: on file is a news article from Reveille: 'Now - The Elephant Trunk Cut'.
Tottenham Court Road, London.
Men's hair styles from 1956. Crazy styles for the young men of the fifties.
M/S of three men sitting and reading magazines in the waiting area of Cyril Parker's hairdressers. Cyril (rather dapper with moustache) sends a finished customer on his way and a young man, Gerrard Bellans from the waiting area walks into the salon to take his place. Another barber is giving a man a crew-cut in the next chair.
Tucking a stripy cover over the Gerrard's shoulders, Cyril hands him a book of hairstyles to look through; some wavy and curly teddy boy styles are seen. Gerrard motions to Cyril that he wants a large quiff; Cyril understands and whisks the book away. He then takes a hairdryer to Gerrard's hair and starts to blow-dry some waves into it, teasing them into a large quiff.
M/S of the two men still in the waiting area as one nudges the other and they both look on. More blow-drying shots. It seems Gerrard's hair is not quite long enough for the style he wants, so Cyril takes a long 'hair sausage' or 'trunk' and places along the centre of the quiff.
He then combs the real hair over the trunk to keep it in place; the trunk makes the quiff protrude from the forehead by about 6 inches! C/U of the man in the next chair looking amazed. Great M/S as Gerrard tips his head back so Cyril can make the finishing touches - the quiff needs it's own postcode by now!
Cyril squirts lacquer / hairspray on the monster quiff, then we see high angle C/U of the hair style. Gerrard gets up and seems fascinated by the quiff hanging above his nose. He is dusted off by Cyril and walks off; the crew-cut man looks incredulous as he walks out. Brilliant!
BRITISH PATHÉ'S STORY
Before television, people came to movie theatres to watch the news. British Pathé was at the forefront of cinematic journalism, blending information with entertainment to popular effect. Over the course of a century, it documented everything from major armed conflicts and seismic political crises to the curious hobbies and eccentric lives of ordinary people. If it happened, British Pathé filmed it.
Now considered to be the finest newsreel archive in the world, British Pathé is a treasure trove of 85,000 films unrivalled in their historical and cultural significance.
British Pathé also represents the Reuters historical collection, which includes more than 136,000 items from the news agencies Gaumont Graphic (1910-1932), Empire News Bulletin (1926-1930), British Paramount (1931-1957), and Gaumont British (1934-1959), as well as Visnews content from 1957 to the end of 1984. All footage can be viewed on the British Pathé website. www.britishpathe.com/
