Happy Birthday Leann! I love your energy and the birthday celebratory surprise! I love Ikebanaist arrangement idea, gorgeous! The first arrangement is beautiful, simple, elegant, and has a focal point. You three are a good team; Caroline is an introvert and has a bohemian flair, Leann can design backward; Marisa is an extrovert, Ikebanaist, and great at trimming her branches with her knees. How fun 😉! BTW, what is the name of that white filler flower? I would love to see the third container with bird of paradise, blue and orange.

Leanne, Marisa, and Carolyn are marvelous floral designers, and they all bring different strengths and styles to the show, which makes them an excellent team. You were asking about the white filler flower that Teacher Marisa was using, and it was Pieris. Your suggestion about a design with birds of paradise is a great one, and we'll add it to our list of ideas. Hope we get to see you again next week for more Flower School Live. How do you strip the spine off of the aspadistra?

That's an excellent question, Linda! Actually it is pretty easy to strip the spine from the leaves, but usually Teacher Marisa leaves it on or uses half a leaf. If you hold the stem with one hand and tear with your other, it works. The best thing to do would be to practice with some less than perfect leaves so you don't use materials that might work in a design. In this show, Teacher Marisa rolls her aspidistra leaves and uses the stem to poke a hole in the leave which holds it in place. The issues can vary and may include color palette, central binding point, focal emphasis, line or form, etc. The good news is that these issues can be changed or corrected with a strong understanding of the elements and principles in floral design.
