The electric car & industry | Michiel Langezaal | TEDxMaastricht

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Michiel Langezaal is responsible for the daily operations at Fastned. He learned how to make a success out of fast charging equipment for electric vehicles.
He graduated in mechanical engineering from the Technical University (TU) Delft. After a few years he joined the business strategy department of A.T. Kearney for the start-up Epyon, linked to the TU Delft. Michiel became the New Business Developer for this producer of fast charging equipment for electric vehicles. At Epyon, Michiel learned how to make a success out of a start-up. In 2011, Epyon was acquired by the Swiss multinational ABB electrical.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Thanks for this great speech. It's so sad that our german car-industry will not see these clear facts until today. I think they will all go the same way like Kodak or Nokia, because the change in their minds comes to late and not aggressive enough. You did a really easy understandable presentation of what happens these days! Great job!

Electric came from many source such as solar panel, huge dam, nuclear fission and fossil fuel but petrol car fuel came from fossil or plant only ( even ethanol in E20 came form plant ) So I think even it’s not totally clean for environment at least it’s better than petrol car for sure

@@skylinedrag electric cars are cleaner because, compared to oil, which needs to be constantly mined and cannot be recycled, lithium needs to be mined only once and can be recycled to build new batteries. In evs powered by Coal. only mining and burning of coal causes pollution, no further pollution/emissions are caused later in the car while driving. while in fossil fuel cars. oil is drilled which causes pollution. it is then refined, which further causes pollution. then transported in ICE trucks. more emissions. then finally burnt in cars. this is the reason, even if EVs are powered 100% by coal they are still cleaner.

We don't know about lithium-ion batteries yet, they are still working on the recycling part of it. oh and don't forget about the 1% loss every day what is 30% a month if you just park your car and not even drive it, you never hear anyone talk about that, I think that is because electricity is cheap.

Once the grid goes down & it will, you have all the populate with their EVs trying to charge in order to escape an immediate disaster, get to a refuge point because it's turning out worse than they thought, or post-event when they have to get to a refuge (food, shelter, medicine, etc).

E-cars will only 'win' the war if they last just as long as a full tank of petrol and have the same performance. It's just like with vegetarians: People say it's better and healthier for ourselves and the environment, but they will have to stop eating something they are used to. It's in the nature of humans to not like to refrain from something they are used to see around themselves. It's nature.

It can take up to 4 days to charge your car at home unless you install an expensive super plug system. That's if the government allows you to. Californians have already been told not to charge their cars at certain times. Imagine if everyone owned electric cars. The power grid can't handle it unless we start building a bunch of nuclear power plants right now. We're not ready for this. We should go hybrid for now and let the car charge itself.

So in order to make his point valid, he had to transform every electric vehicle into a 400 mi range vehicle which is spurious at best. He also assumes wrongly that all the electricity generated will remain at the same level of co2 production. We already see just in the past 3 years a dramatic change in the CO2 emission per kilowatt hour in the United States and there is no reason to believe that this will not continue to improve over the lifespan of an existing electric vehicle. I also questioned his numbers on how much CO2 is produced with an electric vehicle, especially when he does hand waving to change the battery requirements. Bottom line though even if we accept his initial numbers, the electric vehicle is still better than the internal combustion engine.

Complete junk. Batteries are very inefficient. The newer battery technology requires very rare elements and communist China owns most of the mineral rights. Batteries are the worst toxic waste on the planet. Batteries must be charged on the grid which is powered 95% by fossil fuels but requires at least 5 times more energy than just running a gas powered car. If you charge your battery car with solar panels you better be working at night or guess what, more batteries to store the energy required to charge your other batteries in the car making the entire operation at least 10 times less efficient than just running a gas car plus solar panels are horrible toxic waste and very undependable and if you are above the 30th parallel you don’t even get enough sun to create emf. Total bust. Without stealing money from working people to subsidize electric cars we would not be talking about this complete and total failure of an idea.

I'm sorry folks The electric car is not a new idea, the first built in 1840's by 1900 it was being produced by many car manufacturers so if it was around so long Why didn't they take the market in force, the answer is that they were not reliable, they were dangerous, by electrocutions, explosions of hydrogen gas, explosions of the batteries and spewing acid everywhere, and then the charging station, fast forward to recently, Florida and the hurricane and electric cars under water, lack of power to charge, now how long does the new battery last, how much does it cost to replace, and finally what happens to the old battery, it's really hard to recycle, think things through, history, history

Is this a Ted talk or is this a commercial? It’s been eight years since this commercial aired on KZread and what has changed? Batteries are more expensive, when your battery goes dead after 15 years, it’ll cost you $20,000 to replace which means you’re not going to be able to sell your vehicle and you are not going to be able to put a new battery in because it’s just not going to be worth it which will mean that you will park your electric car on the side of the road and there it will stay as a glorified paperweight. Production of a battery electric car releases more greenhouse gas emissions than the production of gasoline cars including their entire life cycle which means battery electric vehicles are more polluting than any other vehicle on the road. The only good electric vehicles manufactured these days are hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. Until replacement batteries cost around $500 instead of $20,000, until batteries do no longer require precious metals and non-sustainable materials, battery electric vehicles are not a good solution for the planet. This commercial labeled as a Ted talk is what’s called Astroturf. Look it up.

Claudio Dinapoli Good idea...let's do exactly that. In 1900, there were steam and electric cars, and they were 2/3 of a VERY small market. Then Henry Ford, who had partnered briefly with Edison on electric cars, went full ICE and mass production to break the public free from Edison and Westinghouse. And we never looked back. Until 1974...when hipsters first tried to push the OLD way on us, saying we should roll with the times... Sound familiar?

I am somewhat baffled by this man's presentation; to a significant degree it was senseless. He has a vested interest in promoting EV's no matter how badly he has done it here. Governments and billionaires can support and back EV's, but the real controlling factor is not the promotion and acceptance of the EV, it is the limited availability of the raw materials needed to build the "millions" of batteries for these cars. This is/will become a geopolitical problem; as of this very moment, Biden Jr. is working to purchase a Cobalt mine in the Congo, the owner of which will be China. Not a soul with specific information can tell you, me, or them, about the quantities of the minerals necessary to build all the required batteries. NOBODY. Facts are that with modern technology being what it is, our coal/gas fueled E generating plants are nearing/have reached totally acceptable levels of pollutant discharge. While we bust our hump here, China is said to be building a primitive, coal fired E plant at the rate of 1 a week and India continues belching out tens of thousands of tons of raw pollutants annually. Does anyone on this planet have any idea about what to do and/or where we are heading?
