I just watched this movie, part of the Italian film festival in Australia right now. It is a slow paced, nuanced movie touching on multiple complex issues - friendship & the maintenance of friendships, father / son relationship, memory & loss, career choices, staying true to one's vocation, innocence/ purity & the preservation of innocence/ purity. These are issues all of us will have to deal with one way or another, one time in the past or future. The mountains serve as that ethereal backdrop which is both majestic and unchanging. I particularly think it is a movie for men who feel lost in a world so focused on gay relationships, almost to the exclusion of "healthy, normal" male bonding. This movie, in its simple but powerful manner, dates to put the "old fashioned" male friendship in the centre. Bravo!

Lol your right, I feel like if this movie went through Hollywood they would make them gay at the end. I know it’s based on a novel but it was nice to see a movie like this that didn’t focus on anything other than that of a bond between friends. It made me reminisce about my old friends I once called my best friends whom I don’t even message anymore 😢 my bestest of friends with my favourite memories slowly fading, this movie re ignited those feelings for sure. However it’s true like in the movie how they say that the bond between you and a friend only exists between the two of you and only the two of you are aware of it, once one of you dies, so too dies half of it all.

The film reminded me distantly of Bertolucci's Novocento: the decades-long friendship of two men across a class divide, in addition to the Italian setting and the overall novelistic scope... though, of course, there is as much as similarity as difference between either picture.

The Eight Mountains is a captivating film that effortlessly stirs emotions, despite its sparse dialogue. The performances are truly captivating, drawing viewers into the poignant narrative. The breathtaking vistas showcased in the film add an extra layer of depth and beauty to the story. However, while the film excels in conveying the solitude of its characters amidst the vast mountain landscapes, it falls short in depicting the intricacies of the bond between the two boys at its core. Additionally, the leisurely pace of the movie may challenge some viewers' patience, requiring multiple sittings to fully absorb. Nevertheless, the long shots of the mountains serve as powerful symbols, representing not only the isolation of the protagonists but also the universal themes of humanity's relationship with nature. Despite its shortcomings, The Eight Mountains remains a commendable cinematic experience.
