For all those who are complaining: who is he?: The Edge, U2 guitarist, who are you?: with all due respect, amateur guitarists. Maybe you don't like his music, maybe you don't like the way he plays but he's one of the guys who wrote songs like "with or without you". "sunday bloody sunday" or "newyears day" to name a few, pop music anthems. His style is perfect for the kind of music U2 does. All the guitar players you are naming are nothing if we ad Paco de Lucia to the conversation, but it's hard to compare guitar players from different styles so why you put The Edge in the same list of David Gilmor, Clapton, Beck, Page, etc, some of the names I've read here?. I don't think they are playing the same kind of music so they don't need the same techniques.

He and his band have developed their own recognizable sound and style and also written many amazing songs that will be played many many years from now. U2 have done what few bands only dream of. I'm not even a fan but I fully appreciate what they have accomplished.

If you want to find out why he's so great search for "U2, Live Aid and Bad" and watch for about 8 minutes. That's the day U2 introduced itself to the world! I was one of the lucky ones who saw them in the early days before they played stadiums.

He has pioneered a signature tone, which has moved more people to a place of emotional intensity than a shredding ego maniac ever did. And if you doubt his ability to noodle doodle, go check out the brutal Hendrix onslaught that is Bullet the Blue Sky live solo circa 1993 Zoo Tv tour. 1. *Eric Clapton said* Edge was probably the last guitarist to influence the sound of rock guitar. 2. Edge always wore (cowboy) hats, caps and beanies since '80s. 3. Most guitarists, even some of the best, are horrible songwriters. 4. I bet you after 35+ years of playing he has had enough practice to play complicated or fast if he wanted to. 5. The Edge already used telecasters on early U2 recordings in the '80s Conclusion: nobody here seems to have the slightest clue on what they're talking about.

Ben Freidlin I think Clapton is correct in that sense, although I would add Metallica and Green Day to the pantheon of bands that influenced rock music with Metallica’s James Hetfield being the last guitar player to leave his stamp of influence (with sound, technique and composition all factored in) on Rock Music.

John Van Buuren #5 is undoubtedly correct and I find it odd that The Edge said that the first time he had picked up a Tele was when he ended up writing “Vertigo”, which came out in 2004. The Edge (at least to my knowledge) used a Fender Telecaster in 1984 on “The Unforgettable Fire” album on the track of the same name. U2 made a documentary about recording The Unforgettable Fire album in 1984 and we see and hear how The Edge used an E-Bow and a slide with his delay and reverb in play on a late-1960s vintage Fender Telecaster with a maple fingerboard. There is also footage floating around out there (it’s even here on KZread somewhere) of The Edge playing the song “The Unforgettable Fire” on the Joshua Tree Tour in 1987 using a late-1960s Fender Telecaster with a rosewood fingerboard. He also played “Sunday Bloody Sunday” in 2001 on a white Japanese Fender Telecaster during their “U2 Go Home” concert. I remember thinking that the Tele he was using put out too much power compared to the Stratocasters that he’s used to play the song since 1983 and the guitar overpowered a lot of the singing in that instance. Strats and Teles aren’t interchangeable in terms of sound palette. What boggles my mind the most is...Why would The Edge lie about something as trivial as this (especially when there’s footage to the contrary)???

Distorted, clean, even unplugged I love playing my tele

Something doesn't add up! The Edge mentioned that he first got a hold of a Telecaster when his guitar tech got it for him during the recording sessions for "HTDAAB". He claims that it inspired the band to write "Vertigo". However, he actually used a telecaster back in 1984 on a song Called "The Unforgettable Fire" on the album of the same name. He used a telecaster and an E-Bow on that song specifically and he even used it on the Unforgettable Fire tour and the Joshua Tree tour. There's also a picture somewhere of Edge holding a sunburst Telecaster During the recordings at Sun studios from the 1987/1988 era.

The Edge is a TRULY musician, a song writer and creator of musical landscapes, more than a guitar hero. He allways admitted it and his approach for playing is very minimalistic, not to mention that he´s more rythm guitarist than lead guitarist. On the other hand he is very good singing, wich is very difficult when you are playing the lead guitar, he does excelent backing vocals, so what´s the problem in that a truly and authentic musician, somebody who really knows well how the Telecaster is built is commenting about the Telecaster???? You only can comment things about guitars if you are a typical guitar-virtuoso hero?? Oh man. I prefer somebody like him! It´s quite clear that a lot of people here doesn´t know a single thing about music, about guitars and about playing guitar. All electric guitarist are playing all the time with effects, there are effects for time like delay, and effects for distorsion, but all are effects, so thinking he´s relying all his efforts on effects is knowing nothing! Any effect means that you have an specific way for playing with them. If you want to play with delay, be sure you are in time, which means a lot of concentration etc etc, not so easy as it appears and people tend to think

I doubt some great guitar players can play rhythmically with delay and make THAT the sound, all with fantastic tone without mudding it up. I've seen all kinds of people and they never get tone, timing or strumming pattern right. Edge isn't a neo-shredder, that's not his style, his isn't an over-gain achiever either. His sound is very recognizable, with his herdum "chips" and heavy use of modern delay/echo and top notch vintage amps and guitars. He has written songs that are HUGE ALL over the wold, beyond just the UK and US. Not to mention U2 just had the highest grossing tour of a music act in history. Ever seen how many Edge copy cat guitarists there are on here? You're right, he's not popular or influential at all. Can you say Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, or Eddie Van Halen are still as prominent today? Today, U2 still sells out massive stadiums AND U2 is still U2, no ones head went up their ass and felt the need to go solo. Yeah, the Edge sucks....all the way to the bank.

He's someone who loves the romance of the tele but is incabable of unconditonally loving it because of it's inherent limitations. As result, they heavily mod it to compensate for its limitations yet preach about its incredible simplicity. the Tele is a tool invented before everyone really knew what the job entailed but was the first nether the less.

Calling Ibanez a metal junk guitar shows how much PaisleyplasDick doesn't know about the subject, My Ibanez can sound bright like a Strat and then warm like a Les Paul depending on my pickup selections and tone adjustments, plus I can crunch out some metal when I want to. The Tele has a warm sound for blues

Brilliant musician who uses his musical knowledge over virtuoso style of playing. I could listen to edge play the guitar all day over some body who just shreds!

Best thing about Mexican Teles, unlike their more expensive American cousins, is they come pre-routed at the neck for humbuckers/minihumbuckers/p90's. All you need is the pickup and the matching scratchplate and you can drop whatever you like straight in. I have a Gibson 500t bridge pickup in the neck. It shouldn't work but it sounds really good:)

In the 70s they produced telecasters with a strat style of headstock. they also used humbuckers

I hate comparing music artists because even them, they are not wasting time thinking who's a better player because they play music out of their love for music not because of competition.. Edge has his own artistic styles in music that gave U2 a sort of signature sound in music.

Isn't this a early 70's Tele Custom. They came with the wide range pickups, Gibson style switch and the full sized Jag headstock (which CBS introduced along most of the model line up)?

the edge has brilliant tone and uses effects tastefully to create magnificent sounds. his guitar playing is designed to suit U2's music and he does it very well. if you ever watched 'it might get loud' you should have also picked up that the edge is a decent guitarist aswell. just because he doesn't shred doesn't mean he is rubbish..
