THE ECOBOOST ACCELERATION STUTTER (and how to fix it)

Do you have a Ford eco boost? Does it smack you in the back of the head when you try to accelerate? Then you should probably watch this...

I was at a dealership for a vibration issue, we thought it might have been driveline or something (turned out my new Falken Wildpeaks were out of round, all 4). While driving with their drivetrain guy, he said he wanted to get the opinion of the transmission guy - that guy said quite a few people have had issues with stutter and vibration due to an issue with the torque converter. It's most common under load and accelerating, inclines tend to make it worse. He also suggested cleaning the intake sensors, which I did, and it helped the idle greatly.

I had a related issue. I changed out my plugs, basically for preventative maintenance and actually CREATED this problem. In fact, the problem was so bad that I actually had enough misfires that a check engine light began flashing and the engine computer shut down cylinders. This resulted in a very rough idle. Once the computer reactivated the cylinders, a smooth idle returned. The symptom didn't appear unless I gave it a decent amount of throttle. I've had the exact same problem occur with my previous vehicle. What you feel can sometimes be described as "spark plug blowout" in boosted engines and the problem becomes noticeable when the engine is under boost. What fixed the problem is actually very simple and I should have caught the issue before I installed the new plugs. The spark plug gap on the new plugs was pretty wide, about 0.040 in or so. My previous car would exhibit the symptom when that gap became greater than about 0.038 or so. The fix was to regap the plugs down to about 0.030 or perhaps a little narrower. It really was that simple. After I regapped the plugs for my F150 down to 0.030, the problem went away. So, when you're putting in new spark plugs, make *sure* they all have the appropriate gap and don't just trust that "the factory" will have preset the gap appropriately.

Initially I thought changing all of the fluids and resetting the computer (disconnecting the battery) would resolve the issue. I accelerate hard from a stop and drive at top speed daily... This first 40k miles I drove 90% highway. Looks like I need to get new plugs!!

I give it about 3/4 gas around 40mph and up it will shutter and act like a misfire it kind of feels like it’s hitting the rev limiter. The only thing I am starting to think is that by putting 33” tires on it throws everything off or something I don’t know. My 2011 was at about 106,000 before the original plugs actually got bad enough to throw a misfire in cylinder 3 under heavy throttle, changed them out and put in a set of NGK irridiums and no more check engine light, less than 2,500 miles later and my misfire in cylinder 3 is back, now to change the coils because I know the NGK's aren't bad this soon! 😂 Tho it didn't really have a stutter before the first misfire, but does have that stutter now under medium throttle, all MAP sensors and MAF sensor cleaned, intake valve cleaning done with CRC, so with new coils she should run and drive like a dream 😁

My 2011 did something similar recently, under approximately 3/4 load it kinda felt like a transmission slip. So I got it up on the highway and put the pedal to the floor - that *really* made it angry. I checked the transmission fluid expecting it to be burnt and/or low - it's neither. I wouldn't have thought it could be spark related as the ruck doesn't indicate any misfires. But it's worth a shot since it's about due for a tune up anyway (only has 93K miles on it.)

I have a 2013 Ford Edge SEL, it is equipped with the 3.5l naturally aspirated ecoboost engine. I have no codes, and I have a stuttering that is worse between 30-50 miles per hour. I also have hesitation if I accelerate beyond 3,ooo rpms. I currently have 78,000 miles on my car and the spark plugs have been changed once already, though I am unsure at what mileage. My plugs already looked fouled and smell like a hint of gasoline, so I know the spark plugs are bad, but the fact that it's primarily hesitating in a specific mph range is alarming to me! I will be replacing the 3 rear coils along with the plugs since I have to remove the intake and numerous other hoses and bolts to access the rear spark plugs/coils. I'll be providing an update AFTER I complete the job.

So I have a 2016, 3.5 eco- boost in a Ford Taurus police car. I’m getting that shutter under load also. You can accelerate out of it. Once you get to a certain speed it doesn’t do it anymore. From takeoff speed till about 45 or 50 mph it shutters and the RPMs go up and down 4 to 500 RPMs. This is not flagging an active misfire, but it is giving me a O2 sensor code. So if it’s not firing correctly, more than likely it’s messing with the emissions. It’s only doing it on bank one. P0420. Does this sound about right in everyone’s opinion?

No your spark plugs are Toast. Check them I bet you the gap is a lot wider than it should be. Put new plugs in Ford motorcraft r about a 100 bucks for the 6 of them. Your engine will thank you for it and so will your mpgs My truck also threw a 02 sensor code But it was the plugs

I have a similar problem with my 2012 F150. I changed the plugs and coil packs, map and intake sensors. It just does not like putting your foot down even just a little bit. It does throw misfire codes at random.

Drill a 1/16 drain hole in the bottom of your intercooler. Use a self tapping screw so you can plug it again and drain as needed.

Not yet. I am going to guess that perhaps it is the timing chain / camshaft area that needs addressing. I have never had a FORD product that did not have issues with a timing gear / train. The camshafts in our ecoboost engines are a complex instrument unlike the simple ones in our older engines.@@netob6826

They are "special" plugs... it would go against God and all things holy if ford made "specialty" parts that actually lasted. This is how they get you to keep coming in for service and buying more parts. I've had the same regular plugs in my 2005 f150 since I bought it new, never had a problem. Bought a 2017 fx4 new and they get changed every 8-15k miles because they simply arnt designed to last or work.....

Double check the plug gap b/c they don’t come gapped correctly from the factory. If that doesn’t fix it I’d start looking at coil packs. Good luck!

@ZeroToAwesome I also saw something about a potential torque converter issue that could show the same symptoms. Have you ever experienced that? The gap is correct on the plugs, I will look into the packs for sure 👍

@@christianhernandez2190 whenever I started driving when it first happened, it was blinking and I lost power. I was slowing down to pull over and it stopped and the cel light turned off. After that whenever I got into my truck the cel was on. Ended up being spark plugs. I replaced them and it has ran fine since. After changing the plugs the cel light will still be on but turned off after 5 minutes of driving and it’s been good since. 6,000 miles since I changed and no problems

I did the exact same thing I had the exact same problem I changed plugs and coil packs, problem went away…. Basically what I learned researching was when you put a turbo charger on the engine. You have to change the spark plugs and have the normal distance.. you got an engine that gets changed every 50,000 miles and then you buy one that’s turbo charged the same engine now you got 25
