New channel for me. I am enjoying your tutorials. One thing I remember learning is that using different brand rulers on the same project can also make a difference.

I am a relatively new quilter. The 1/4" seam allowance on my machine clearly was not as my 6" 9 patch blocks were barely 5". Since watching this video a couple of weeks ago, I spent 2 full days calibrating my seam allowances and guess what? Over the last week I have put together 28 perfect 6" 9 patch blocks. They are bang on once sewn into the quilt. So thank you so much for your assistance. It was so very much appreciated and helpful. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Thanks for demonstrating this approach (one I have not seen before). The tests I have done involved cutting 3 strips at a precise width, sewing them together and testing the overall width for a particular result, thereby dealing with 2 seams and their inherent seam allowances, meaning more variables to figure out the proper correction. Your way is quicker since there is less measuring and cutting of strips. I'm saving this for future reference. I also like your stressing how differences in fabrics, threads, pressing, etc. can all create different measurements. Test, test, test ... for every project ... every machine.

How enlightened! Thank you! I had learned scant quarter seam… I would still have problem during my project. I so appreciate your suggestion in testing seam especially during the project.

Honestly, the very best video I've ever seen on this subject. I will do this with every project now. But, honestly, what an opportunity to use theme fabric for your test pieces! You could have a baby quilt or table runner or Christmas pillows in no time.

I just found your channel and this by far is the best vid I have seen for 1/4" seam allowances. I have tried all kinds of suggestions from a thin stack of post it notes to a small magnetic ruler.... I'm better, but still inconsistent. Practicing before every project makes so much sense. Thanks so much - I'm so happy I have found your channel!

You have to have perfect seam allowances if you want to sew 1/16” stripes with me! 😂

Thanks!! I do a lot of tiny piecing, so I’m really careful with my seam allowances. I had someone ask me a while back and realized it was never taught in a way that made sense to me, so I made up this way! I’m glad you found it valuable!

this was wonderful - you explain things so well and give the reasons behind what you do which is excellent. Now I will have to give it a try as I've been frustrated with my blocks not coming out "perfect" and have been concerned about getting that perfect 1/4" seam allowance - a great method for testing - thanks so much!

I really wish I had watched this video before I sewed my first quilt (which I’m still quilting) cuz I was SO frustrated at how off my work was! I literally had to CUT DOWN EACH BLOCK in order for it to match and line up! 😩. I knew there would be SOME issues since it is my first quilt, but it’s really demoralizing when this happened. It makes you doubt yourself and your ability TO SEW 1/4” which should be fairly easy.....so I thought. But thank you for this. I’m sure this will solve that problem in the future! 👍🌸😊

Wow! I didn’t realize that the direction of pressing would change the accuracy of the seam as well! I will now do these tests for each project, too.

Thanks for this great video! I have a Juki just like yours, with the same seam guide, and I also have a Juki DX7 computerized machine, and the quarter-inch settings are (it seems like) miles apart. Very frustrating! I fiddle around with these settings all the time and I'm never satisfied. Your method is the best one I've seen.

Isn't it surprising how different machines are?? I had to change the default setting on my janome so I could get a 1/4" quite a bit!

Very informative. I have been trying to perfect my 1/4-inch seams, and the pressing of the seam can also make a difference! Thank you. Oh yes, I have tried moving the needle too, and that helps as well.

Thank you! I have a Juki the same as your’s… and I’ve been really struggling to get my 1/4” seam perfect. I learnt a lot from your quick video… the pressing direction of the seam, I’m not being pedantic (this seam allowance really matters) and I need the seam guide you have!

Its an adjustable seam guide that attaches with screws to my juki. There are other non-juki seam guides available--even some magnetic ones if you don't have screw holes in the throat of your machine. :). Heres a link to the adjustable one I use: amzn.to/2EkYmae

I was quite surprised at the difference it made!! It seems like such a small thing but it would add up over a lot of seams.

This is a helpful video. I would never say that Art Gallery fabric is flimsy. It isn’t, but the weave is finer which is why it feels so beautifully smooth. Thanks for the tips.

That's probably a much fairer way of saying it. I've never had a problem with the quality of art gallery fabric, so flimsy was poor word choice. Finer is definitely better :)

No wonder I had this frustrating problem. I was always so careful cutting and sewing and it was just not working out correctly. I figured it was because I was a newbie to quilting and hoped it would get better with each quilt, but it didn't! Thank you a million times for this video!

Great instruction in that video. I always have trouble when sewing 1/4" on either side of a drawn line (to make HSTs). I've tried using a ruler to mark those lines, or the 1/2" ruler (magic wand?) but my seams are either too wide or too narrow. Do you have any suggestions or could you do a video on that subject? Thanks

When I'm making HSTs, I usually don't worry about it too much. As long as my seam allowance is large enough to be stable, I just trim the block down to the correct size.

Very helpful video! Just a small quibble - the presser foot that you showed, with the built-in seam guide, is a single hole foot. If you move the needle left or right, the needle will hit the presser foot and break. (Been there, done that!) I do not know how to adjust the seam allowance for that particular foot. Remove the guide, maybe? I don't know. For myself, I ended up using a zig-zag foot, with no built-in-guide, for my movable-needle machine. Any other ideas?

Where do I get the seam guide you are using? In high school that is similar to what we used. I usually use a magnetic guide and it is not actuate where I was placing it on my machine. I switched to the foot that has the bar on it. I am working on a jewel block and I have not checked the seams but I know it is smaller than the block I am making for the cozy quilt sewquester mystery quilt. I have a janome machine. Thanks I have learned a lot from you.

I don’t know if it would fit other brands but it might if your needle plate has the two screw holes. I like this one because it swings out of the way. There are some simpler/cheaper screw on guides that serve the same purpose but don’t swing away. When I sew on my janome, I use one of the feet with a guide on it and just move my needle. :). A great reminder on how important seam width is.

What is the seam/fabric guage thingy you are using?

For a long time I gave up trying to piece more complicated patterns. Why? Because the seams don't nest even though I've measured the distance from seam to edge of fabric (internal whopping if it's a perfect 1/4 seam!). Washi tape, masking tape... I even bought seam sew easy guide but sigh... The perfect 1/4 inch seam is still elusive for me. Then who knows it could be affected by how I press my seams. 🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️🙇‍♀️. Thank you so much for understanding this problem and creating a sensible and very assuring video that tho elusive, the consistent quarter inch seam is not impossible. (ps: for computerised machine, instructions on how to get the 1/4 inch seam is included. Hahaha) Have a great 2021!

Where table are you using for your Juki?

I unfortunately found out how important this is and I will, going forward, ALWAYS check with each project. I just made a quilt and ... changed machines part way through. I did not take any seams out. My excuse is the quilt is for a teenager who won’t realize some points were cut off. Never again!! Thank you!

I had MANY quilts like that when I first started because I would move machines! Its amazing how different a "1/4"" is on different machines. You'd think they could be more consistent!

Clashing colors are cool tho! I really don't know much about sewing😂just trying to learn.

I have blocks where I press some seams open and some to the side.

I hate to say this, but practice. Some machines have feet with marks on them that measure 1/4 from the needle. Or you could mark your own with some nail polish or a marker.

Brilliant and helpful! I'll start using this immediately and hope that my frustration level (which already isn't high because I sew to relax, after all) will diminish. You can buy a seam guide for almost any machine. Mine didn't come with one, so I bought this accessory. If your machine doesn't have a standard one, they also have magnetic seam guides that work really well. I bought a two pack of them a while ago for a few dollars on amazon :). I hope that helps!

Hi there - should the 1/4" include the thread/sew line? Meaning, should the thread/sew line be on the inside of the ruler lines, on the outside, or should the 1/4" line on the ruler be right on top of the thread/sew line? TIA.

For the final measuring of the 1”? I measure so the lines on the ruler are stacked right on top of the seam line. Likewise when I measure for the 1 1/4” piece before sewing. I want that line on the ruler right on top of the seam. I hope that helps! ❤️
