There was too much to fit into one video, so have a bonus secret from me; at 11:41 you can spot the abandoned former London Underground depot near New Cross! Replaced in 2007 when the Overground took over, the sheds are long gone but the tracks are still there - get an Overground train out of New Cross and look left, you should see it 😊

To my knowledge this space will be used again to store trains. Services will be increased on the ELL using surplus Class 378s from the NLL/Watford DC Line

Another fun fact: Wapping & Shadwell every year are granted a derogation from Her Majesty's Railway Inspectorate to remain open which is required as their platforms are too narrow for modern standards.

Wow, it’s still weird to me seeing the old East London Line as something else. In 1993 when I first visited London, I stayed in Deptford and became very familiar with New Cross Station (I intentionally did not stay where your typical tourist would, rather I stayed with the friend of a friend’s sister in his flat along Deptford Church Street). One memory of that trip was encountering an auto parts shop just down the road from the station and seeing a mid-1970s Chevrolet Chevelle muscle car parked in front... looked like something one of my neighbors had when I was a kid.

That's a good point about the orange. I think this line was purple and white on the 80s tube maps as it was sort of Metropolitan. When London Overground was born they all went orange. And the BR lines (I think just the North London and Waterloo and City) were white

They did end up "shortcreting" most of the Thames Tunnel, for waterproofing purposes mainly. They did, however, leave several arches untouched at the Rotherhithe end for posterity. Admittedly, they did end up covering over most of the Brunel's original design, but the alternative would have been leaving the line closed permanently, and the tunnel left to decay; I doubt very much it would have been converted back to a pedestrian tunnel. As a result of the protracted negotiations with English Heritage, the line stayed closed for 3 years from 1995, instead of the originally planned 6 months!

It's like all cross London Lines to date; an old infrequently used line and some old bridges and a tunnel and hey presto 3 shiny new services! Thanks for this ASAM are you going to cover Broad Street? and even more weird the Graham Road curve in Hackney that enabled them to demolish the station and use Liverpool Street for a relatively short time.

@@grimpeursdusud1533 There's nothing left of Broad Street to film now. It's all been completely wiped out by the Broadgate Centre. The featuring of the old Shoreditch ELL terminus site in this video was probably the nearest thing of relevance here, especially as the line has been diverted from there onto the previous ex- Broad Street route alignment. The Graham Road curve is still in situ today, hardly anything uses it though.

2:45 The LCDR did not go to London Bridge, that was a joint station between the SER and the LBSCR. The spur you show was in fact a second connection to the LBSCR line, going towards Peckham Rye, where the LBSCR and LCDR met, thus giving access by both companies to the ELR.

Great video, although it makes me feel very old. I moved to London in the mid-1980s and then bought a tiny flat in New Cross Gate when working in Rotherhithe. I used the East London Line every day from New Cross Gate to Rotherhithe. What used to fascinate me was the flooding in the tunnel. When a train left Wapping you could see it coming well before you could see the actual train because the lights on the front of the train would be reflected in the flood-water long before you saw the train. I'm fairly certain there was a lot of electrical power loss through shorting through the water flooding. These were the dog-days of the 1980s recession and also the final days of the London Docks. At the time it was simply a wasteland and there seemed to be no future (at the time it took the best part of an hour by public transport to get to central London, so the people who lived in the area felt abandoned - there were also a lot of squatters there). It is completely different now, and I sure wish I had bought a few properties at the time on my limited means.

Thank you for sharing your story! That sounds fascinating. So the tunnel between Wapping and Rotherhithe would flood regularly? And that's intriguing about the area - it seems a lot of East London has gone through a massive regeneration, which is ultimately good to see. :)

@@HeyItsAJOmega Yes, the tunnel would leak groundwater, or river water, quite badly. I assume that there were pumps at the lowest point to remove it, but most of the time the tracks at the lowest point would be under a few inches of water. From memory, they did tank the tunnel during the period of closure prior to it becoming the overground. Because the tunnel is a listed structure they had a problem because they wanted to make it watertight to make it a modern tunnel, but also they had to preserve the structure. I think they managed to compromise by retaining a couple of arches of the original structure and then tanking the rest of it.

I remember in the sixties and seventies when I went to New Cross every day for school the underground platform for the Metropolitan line. Also the old underground depot at New Cross plus when they were building the new Overground depot at Surrey canal road, that was areal pain as they would often block access to a company I had to service adjacent to it. Sadly I also remember when Surrey canal road was the Surrey canal which ran to Greenland dock (I worked there for 7 years) now yuppie flats. Not train related but if you go to Plough Way SE16 there was, and may still be, a sign on or near the bridge that used to go over the Surrey canal that marked the border of Kent and Surrey.

Thank you!! The two NX stations were always an odd one especially when the line just stopped at NXG. And theres stuff that I didnt get to mention in the video, like how the branch that now goes to Queens Road Peckham and round to Clapham Junction uses the original London bridge branch of the ELL which was shut to passengers in 1911, lifted in 1964, then brought back by London Overground in 2012!

Heading northbound, just before Whitechapel there is a large open section (can be seen on google maps framed between Milward Street and Stepney Way). About a carriage length after that, it starts opening up on the left to St Mary's Curve, you might just be able to see it if you peer through the windows. Sometimes the lights are left on in there too. Also, with the regeneration and secured funding for the Canada Water/New Bermondsey area, the planned increase of ELL services to 20tph will require Surrey Quays to be expanded with a new entrance and the sidings at New Cross to be brought back in to use! They're not completely forgotten yet!

Can't help thinking that they should extend this from new cross to Hayes instead of the expense of converting that to LU for the Bakerloo line. Shoreditch High street is closer to the city than any B'Loo station, change at Canada water for the west end.
