After our return, we should get right up to the net. Why? We can be the most offensive from the NVZ line. Sometimes our return may not be the best, and when playing against bangers, this could be a huge problem. Check out this video so that you can know exactly what to do after your return!

How often do YOU poach?
This type of rec play breakdown is really helpful. Also if you could add some with 4.0 to 4.5 rec play breaking down (contrasting) what they are doing vs what you see typical 3.0-3.5 doing in similar situations.

I love these breakdowns! You both are very good at explaining the "whys" of the point. Thanks!

Np!
I’ve noticed its easier to poach when my opponents only want to hit to my teammate.

Hi Jordan this is Ed. Red shirt is Jeff. This was located in Victory in Vertado.

Awesome!!
Great channel and I am big fan of point breakdowns. One thing that you said that I teach differently is being parallel with the non volley zone line on Ed's shot that was coming cross court. I teach to always be facing the ball like he was unless your opponent is pulled way off of the court. Since there is only one ball, the ball can only be coming from where it is on your opponents side. This way your always facing the ball instead of having to hit it across your body. Can you further explain why you feel someone would want to be facing towards the person across the net from them when the ball is coming cross court at an angle from their partner in more detail?

This is exactly what I was taught too. Track the ball from where it's coming and don't always be so square to the net. Interested in hearing what Jordan has to say about this.

Generally, players have no idea how their feet are set up. It’s definitely ok to have a slight angle towards the ball on a split step, but the general way I teach it is to have your toes facing the net. If you’d like, send us a video of your game for our team to analyze here: link.myjourneypickleball.com/LlXHEnbJ9Bb
When you poach, you must make a kill or have a partner who covers your spot in the event that it gets returned. Too often, I'm poaching with a slow and/or rookie partner who doesn't cover and if I don't hit the kill shot the return is to my open court... and my fault for losing the point and my fault for stealing my partner's ball and my fault for playing with a random partner who doesn't have the speed or knowledge to play aggressively.

This is semi-true, as I would also look at where you are attacking the ball. Lots of players poach and hit the ball as hard as they can, but put it in a place where it can get easily returned.
Appreciate this breakdown a lot! One of my issues when I'm playing like Mr Red who is pinching the middle, as my partner is back a bit--so when Peter is receiving his last shot before the poach--here i find that someone like Peter ends up hitting behind me (when I thought it was going middle) and I get caught and therefore miss getting to that shot down the line or behind me--this issue repeats and wonder if you have any things I can do other than not pinch the middle--which then gets hit to and my partner being back takes the ball often at their feet and pops it up

Yes, although the shot before you poach may not be a great shot to go on. There’s always a risk in poaching, as the timing in your movement is important as well. If you’d like, send us a video of your gameplay so that we can analyze it and break it down here: link.myjourneypickleball.com/LlXHEnbJ9Bb
I would still like to see a video about poaching

You are more than halfway through the video, before you talk about poaching. I’d like a more focused video on the topic.

Great video!. Some nuggets for sure. Concentrate more on getting that return deep than running to the line, split-step, low ball short-hopped then have paddle higher and ready and in front. Also hitting through the ball towards the target on the follow through. You stopped the action at -2:30 at the perfect spot too. You can see Mr. Red has his weight just slightly on the left as he cannot tell where the ball is likely to go yet and he has to cover his side of the court. I think that once he sees the angle of Peter's paddle he shifts his weight to the right and steps slightly forward with his right foot. He then quickly split-stepped in order to be able to 'push' to the right off of his left foot instead of keeping his weight on the right foot and trying to 'pull' his body to the right I believe? Is that a technique or something I am projecting (I know that tennis players are taught to step forward first to push off to go back to get a lob)

Yes you push off left to go right, this is why spilt step is crucial
