Motion city soundtrack and All American rejects were in a weird line between Emo and a modern version of a Cheap Trick style band. These bands had a super bright aesthetic with colorful music videos.

It’s so nice to hear someone else love MCS as much as I do! I think they are hugely underrated. Here in the UK they did a tour where one night they played “I Am the Movie” and “Commit This to Memory” in full, and it was, to this day, the best gig I have ever been to. As someone who was too young to see them tour when these albums came out, it was such a great experience!

I live in the city they formed in and for some reason that I honestly don't know, that very fact motivates me more to pursue music to maybe not a performer extend but something higher than a hobby. To learn about music, it's theories, literacy and genres & what their contrasts from each other are. I just really love this band a lot and they're such a powerful motive.

Motion city 1000% made me realize what a great music city Minneapolis had. I am blanking on the club they were always so thrilled to play but the bands that started thru there and started in that town impressive!

Patrick Stump did back up vocals for Everything is Alright. I loved this band. I came onto the bandwagon when I heard Mark Hoppus was talking about how he had been listening to I am the Movie. Even if it Kills me is the cd i listened to all my life when going through a heart break or something devastating. My Dinosaur life is my third favorite album too. But That is because I am the movie is 4th. But it is like comparing four of the cutest babies that are all your children. You can't really pick. I am happy you made this video! Just Courtney Pierre is a really humble dude and I have talked to him a few times on Facebook and he is great. In this drink is great too! Mark Hoppus also produced my Dinosaur life. They supposedly got back together and did release that song crooked teeth or something like that but I haven't given it a listen. I kind of fell off when Panic Stations came out and was not super into it. My Dinosaur Life was amazing though. Great Video. GET IT! WHOOOOOAHOOOHOOHOOOOOOOOOOO.

I saw MCS in 2002- it was my first real show I had ever been to. The moog player did handstands and it changed my life. Commit this to memory is absolutely a perfect record, you nailed that review.

coming to this video after watching your fall out boy video-for a long time i thought fob was my Favorite Band of all time, until i revisited mcs’s discography right before they broke up originally. justin’s lyricism has been so important to me as a preteen into adulthood, and musically mcs always wraps me up into a very particular place. i’ve never personally known anyone who loved them much so i appreciate this video! i have SO much unspoken love for them that i wish i could’ve shared with other people. thanks dude

I think MCS is the logical extension of Jangle as it breached the 2000's. Jangle obviously traces it's roots decades back to the Byrds and eventually kind of met a pop death with REM. The heavy arpeggiation and vocals in the higher range really push that. The Braid influence extends that into "oh yes, this is midwest emo" but ignores that the stylistic roots of Midwest emo derive from Jangle. Jangle kind of branched toward the nerdier genres with Weezer and Barenaked Ladies (arguably Fountains of Wayne as well) as well as the main stream of Midwest emo so the classification "Jangle-core" fits the hard branding that they really need to avoid both the pop-punk connotations (REM also struggled to get out of the indie branding for similar reasons) while maintaining that they do fit the genre.

I have the floppy disk version of IATM! Hah, so cool seeing this. They played a festival in Medford, NY (on Long Island) in August 2002 called This Island Earth. It was supposed to happen the next year (with NFG headlining?) or every year but it never did... that one year the line up was amazing (in hindsight.) I was new to this music so didn't know all the bands, including MCS who I was impressed with that day and bought the floppy version of IATM. The festival had Brand New, Taking Back Sunday, The Starting Line, Thursday, Midtown, Hot Rod Circuit, The Early November, From Autumn To Ashes, and a bunch more. was anyone else there? one of my favorite random one-off shows ever!

the different track listing was interesting. in college my friend loved the song "Capital H" and I was like what song?! (this is waaayyy before streaming, etc. I had a land line in my dorm room and no cell phone) they'd play it at shows and he'd sing along, and I didn't know it because my 1st version of IATM didn't include it. Great song, though, as I came to enjoy it.

My musical tastes are generally much heavier and darker than the bands you cover, however, I was dating a girl in the mid '00s who was really into the whole scene thing and I honestly didn't like the vast majority of it. I do remember thinking MCS was far and away the best band she exposed me to though. I think I probably started watching your videos because you covered a band I remember her being into and just enjoyed learning about all the bands I was always just peripherally aware of. Motion City were definitely different. Thoroughly enjoyed the video.

Back in 2007 (maybe 2008) I was at my usual hangout with my bff when I saw a friend sitting a table. He tells us to sit down, we get a drink and he says meet my friend Jesse. We say hey, then it's casually brought up that Jesse is in a band, Motion City Soundtrack (I don't remember if I had ever heard of them), and they had played a show earlier that night with The Postal Service(?) and I can't remember who else. So we leave the bar and walk to some guys apartment where a bunch of people are hanging out, drinking. Then we leave a bit later and it's me, my bff, Jesse and the dude from Postal Service - who is very drunk and keeps saying "we have the number one song in the UK" he says this a million times. So we end up at this very nice hotel downtown is his hotel room but he's so wasted, it's uncomfortable. Jesse and I go and get a room, grab my bff, postal service guy was passed out, and we check in to the room at like 2, 3am? Oh ya, MCS had a show in Vancouver BC the next day with All American Rejects and by bff told him we'd drive him instead of him taking their tour bus there. Jesse was a gentlemen even though he was sharing a bed with two fine, younger ladies. We get to Vancouver the next day (from Seattle) and he gets us tickets to the show and backstage. Tyson, from AAR was soooo drunk and immature and kinda rude. We said goodbye. Jesse hit us up next time he was in town and we all got together. I ended up on their tour bus, spent the night with I don't even know who in one of those bunks. Cringe. In the morning, I'm leaving and at the front of the bus is Justin(?) the lead singer. He had this deer in the headlights look. I was so hungover and about to do the walk of shame. All around great times. Jesse is a very nice, down to earth dude. Definitely not a creep either, like a lot of guys can be, sadly.
