The Early History Of Christian Pilgrimages | Pilgrimage with Simon Reeve

The starting point of Simon Reeve’s pilgrimage is the beautiful and wild coast of Northumberland. From there he heads south on a 400 mile to learn about the history of pilgrimage and visit some spectacular sights along the way.
For centuries pilgrimage was one of the greatest adventures, epic journeys around the country and across the world. Simon Reeve will be retracing the steps of our ancestors, exploring the hidden and the darker side of pilgrimage, and discovering why so many modern pilgrims are taking to the road. His journey will take him from the north of England to Canterbury, then through France into northern Spain, across the Alps into Italy and on into the eternal city. He will travel East into Turkey, across the Mediterranean to the holy land and on to his final destination - Jerusalem.

There's also an Orthodox chapel, St. Seraphim's chapel, housed in the repurposed historic railway station in Walsingham.

Weird things happening in Sweden now: pilgrimage has a huge revival outside the church. Entire country is criss crossed with pilgrim routes along the old medieval paths but mainly without the christian aspects. Ok so the church tries to get in on it but pilgimage now is still mainly a "nature-health" thing possibly also a bit new agey and even preppy... Sad when the original purpose is ruined and God is forgotten in favour of the phenomena itself. It's become like christmas...

sorry to correct you but no, Sweden like all of Europe is a deeply spiritual and religious place, pilgrimage is singularly a faith exercise today and is promoted as such and certainly in the past. today you can do pilgrimage though for historical religious reasons but it is uncommon. most pilgrimages are done for solely spiritual reasons, here in the UK many counties have set up pilgrimage trails for those wanting to experience it, the same is no doubt true in Sweden, which has powerful ties to the catholic church. No county on Earth has forgotten God or the religious meaning of Christmas since Christmas is universally celebrated as a celebration of the birth of Christ in almost every country. Your 'facts' are way off base

@@shawntipton5078 well... I am swedish, living in Sweden and am an ordained minister in the lutheran church... my facts aren't wrong, they are slightly hampered through this format of discussion. The catholic version of pilgrimage in Sweden is highly 'religious' but not the lutheran evangelical. Both denominations are walking around in the forest between certain places of devotion but the lutheran version is very watered down. It might still 'do things' to/for the participants but it's definately more a prepper/nature thing for lutherans than catholics. As for 'deeply spiritual and religious' I would argue it could be better LOL. Also my comment a year ago relates to midieval pilgrimage, not the present spinoffs. We also might interprete 'spiritual' differently.

@28.00 "pilgrimage was a way of sinning a bit away from home" . Naah, that remark is patronizing and faulty. Ppl didn't go on pilgimage too fool around with 'ladies', party and booze their heads off. Pilgrimage was never a christmas party att the office off hours. It's just stupid to claim such a thing. It's a completely different thing that the big city provided the temptations as such and that ppl fell for it to some degree!

This guy is sickening... His attitude towards religion is, "it's stupid, but it's ok", as if it were an episode of the Three Stooges or something.
