@@kathyt9837 I think it's the best biography of Churchill Kathy. He was a man of many faults but a remarkable one. And a great one imo. We have to remember that he was a man of his time and upbringing and some of his opinions that we find distasteful were the generally held ones at the time. People love to try and destroy a reputation though. Enjoy the book.

Listen carefully to the contents of this speech where Churchill points out his budget leaves the working and middle-class’s wealth and taxation unchanged and chooses instead to increase the tax burden on the wealthiest class of British citizens, which, as he rightly points out at that time, “in numbers and in wealth is much greater than in any equal community, if not indeed in any other modern state in the whole world.” Churchill reasons that making the wealthiest citizens should make the biggest tax contributions because “that class (the wealthiest British citizens) which enjoys more than any other opportunities for pleasure has more to gain than anyone else from dwelling amid a healthy and contented people and in a safely guarded land.” On a day when the fate of American democracy seems to be in the balance as people vote in today’s midterms it has now been over forty years, since the time of Reagan and Thatcher, that anyone has seriously proposed drastically increasing the tax burden on the wealthiest Americans. Following Churchill’s logic above it seems clear there has been no class of people in world history since the last tyrannical kings and authoritarian monarchs in the 18th century Europe that so small a group of people as are the wealthiest 1% of Americans and their corporations, in a country the wealth of which has NEVER been exceeded in history. It is this 1% that has the greatest leisure, pleasure, and opportunity to gain from living and doing business in America, and the wealthiest 1% benefits the MOST from living among a healthy, prosperous and contented people. Yet neither of the two American political parties seriously challenges the assumption that the rich deserve to keep all of their wealth for generations, and the Republicans in fact want to extend more tax cuts to the rich and cut benefits to everyone else. The point is, listen to Churchill and hear that even a CONSERVATIVE like Churchill realized the sense and justice of taxing those who have benefited and profited most from living and doing business in a great nation like Great Britain (or, today, the USA). Why in the 21st century can we not see the absolute necessity of doing so now? Failure to do so will inevitably lead to the violent destruction of these formerly great nations, for it is a strong and wealthy people that keeps a nation great … not a selfish super rich oligarchy at the very top.
Great man of his time. Made mistakes, but which politician doesn't make mistakes - and making war is not easy. Having to drag your country up through the sheer force of your personality and the words you speak is something that marks him out as great - and Britain was alone at the time of worst peril when he first became prime minister, with its army trapped in France. His achievement was an incredible feat of political leadership to overcome those that wanted to give in and at the same time inspiring the nation to believe they could beat the evil of those that wanted to make war.

I know Herbert Asquith made a recording around this time to. I would love to know more about why they were made, there wasn't a BBC back then and radio didn't really take off until the 1920s.

There is no transcript of this speech online.
He is advocating the very controversial People's Budget sponsored also by David Lloyd George and Prime Minister Herbert Asquith (great grandfather of Helena Bonham Carter). The budget passed the House of Commons, but the House of Lords blocked it for a year. The House of Lords' opposition to measures like this led to the weakening of its powers a few years later. See Roy Jenkins book, Mr. Balfour's Poodle. (Balfour was leader of the Conservative Party.)
Taxing the value of land instead of taxing production and exchange. That is the quintessential liberal position that Churchilll championed here.

Incidentally in the film 'Young Winston', in a speech to Parliament he urges reduced spending on the army which is surprising to me, given his military background.

Churchill referred throughout his life glowingly to the "cottage home", reflecting his appealing, romantic view of england but also perhaps the fact that he may never have stepped inside one.

Those who make unfounded remarks on any leader, obviously dont know the huge responsibility of such a position. Outsiders can make any negative comments, ignorant of the uncertainties of war and oeace.

At this time he is an important minister, President of the Board of Trade, in the Liberal government led by Asquith - this gives him a seat in cabinet and a legitimate voice on economic issues. He is young for his seniority, and has hitched his political wagon to one of the leading lights of the Liberal Party, Lloyd George (later to succeed Asquith as Prime Minister during the First World War) who is Chancellor of the Exchequer (= Finance Minister) and a genuinely big beast in their jungle. The budget of 1909 is one of the most important budgets of British history - it was devised by Lloyd George, and as his henchman Churchill campaigned as vigorously as he could in support of it - this is part of that campaign. The budget was important partly because it involved some redistribution of wealth, partly because it firmly rejected the Conservative swing towards protective tariffs initiated by Joseph Chamberlain. But critically, it was vehemently opposed by the House of Lords (largely Conservative in make-up) - it led to a historic confrontation between the House of Commons and the House of Lords which culminated in a permanent reduction in the power of the Upper House to prevent or delay legislation coming from the lower House. It took another 12 months+, and a general election, for this to work itself out, but popular support for the 1909 budget was essential for this to happen.
