The E-Flat Clarinet - an instrument for ants?

If you are curious what pieces contain absolutely ✨iconic✨ Eb clarinet solos definitely check out these:
-Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique 5th Movement. (1st excerpt from the video)
-Ravel’s Bolero (2nd excerpt from the video)
-Strauss’s “Till Eulenspiegels lustige streiche” (3rd Excerpt from the video)
-Stravinsky’s the “Rite of Spring”
-Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 6, 2nd Mov.
-Ravel’s “Piano Concerto in G Major”
If you’re curious what my Eb setup is right now:
Buffet Crampon Tosca Eb Clarinet
Vandoren BD5 Mouthpiece
3.5 Strength Bb clarinet Blue Box Vandoren Reed (I trim the heel of the reed to make it fit)
Custom Barrel
And I know I’m kind of roasting the instrument in this short, but it really is fun to play! (But wear earplugs when you practice, seriously!)
Ultimately, the Eb clarinet repertoire is chock-full of interesting, varied and mostly difficult parts. Composers write for it in the same way that they write for a normal clarinet. Fast technique, wide interval leaps, delicate lyricism etc. Some of the best clarinet solos really are written for Eb. It’s just unfortunate that, because of its size, virtually every aspect of playing it becomes more difficult. However, if you ever get the chance to play it, definitely take it as it makes for a fun ensemble cycle!
If you’ve made it this far, let me know what your favorite Eb clarinet part is down below!

My section leader plays e flat and every single week, I hear something like this. "It's 20 cents sharp . . . "

I named my first eefer Lucy, short for Lucifer, and I don’t think that’s terribly unfair.

Amazing instrument, I was asked to play it in community band a couple of months ago and enjoy every moment of it. Cool short

Thanks! It really is a fun instrument to play when the opportunity arises!
my band teacher calls them egg clarinets because she calls e-flat egg-flat and it just makes sense

I think til eulenspiegels is actually written for D clarinet, which very few ppl have now so it's usually played on Eb clarinet

Ya, that’s correct!
in symphonie fantastique (final movement) it's used to portray the witch form of harriet smithson, berlioz's dream girl
I played the E flat clarinet in college and absolutely fell in love with it. Of course, getting to play the solos in Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy and Hindemith's Symphony for Band helps!
This totally just made this Eb Clarinet players day!
I love my Eb, but alas, it does not return the love.

You know this is a nasty little thing when you would rather (and have done so before) use that AP Music Theory class high intelectual brain to transpose the score to Bb.

Lol, I’ve been there! The Eb just has so much potential to be unexpectedly brutal with the wrong sequence of notes!

What are you using to edit these? Reels have been a "reel" pain for me to figure out in my old age :P

Hey Sean! I use Adobe Premiere Pro to edit all of my videos (including reels.) However, if I was just starting out picking a software today I would probably get the free version of Davinci Resolve and upgrade when and if I ever needed to. (Depending on what you need it to do.)
What ligature was used in this video? Just curious

The Tosca Eb is great, but I also have really liked the Buffet RC, Selmer Recital and Rossi Eb I’ve tried! There are a lot of great options on the market, it’s hard to go wrong!

@@ParkHouseCreations What do you like specifically about the tosca?
@ParkHouseCreations

@@nicktheclarinet6718 Sorry for the delay! I like all the instruments I mentioned earlier because their sound tends to lean more full like a Soprano clarinet and not quite as toy-ish like a typical Eb clarinet, with the exception of maybe the RC, (I just thought the RC was really easy to play.) To my ears, the Rossi is the most full sounding Eb clarinet I’ve played/heard, but the Tosca and Recital come close. I ended up getting a Tosca because I was lucky and received a good deal on it used. However, all of that being said, at the end of the day they are all still Eb clarinets and they play a really niche role in the orchestra. In that regard having an instrument that’s more on the “Toy-ish” side is preferred by some clarinetists and conductors. The most important thing to find is an instrument that tunes well for you, the sound should be an afterthought.
