I am a Burgher myself, but I wasn't aware of half the information, our Dr Zameer Careem (whose mum is a Dutch Burgher) shared. Mindboggling memory, and eloquence. Such fluency, my Goodness. He is passionate about history just like Dr Spittel, Dr R.L. Brohier, Prof Blaze and many other Burgher physician-historians. I am sure that no other historian in SL could have pulled off this episode with such aptitude other than Dr Careem. His knowledge and expertise on the subject of minorities, is extraordinary, truly a walking, talking encyclopedia. May the blessings of God always be with him.

Yes, Dr Careem has provided outstanding commentaries on the several segments of Lost & Forgotten I've watched. His breadth and depth of knowledge are quite amazing. Kudos also to the young presenter of this series, who has proved an excellent foil. To you both I say 👏👏👏 great work!

@@dravidamonkey4253 You do know and realize dearest Dravida, that there is feasibly, technically and factually NO SUCH THING as a "full breed" among any of us, don't you? In fact today, scientists consider such biological essentialism obsolete and modern genetic science rejects the concept of the social construct, based on the understanding that even "mixed" races are full breed of themselves, as a composite. All of the races are equal, no matter how diverse the gene pool is, or where their heritage lies. However behaviour and respectfulness is not and therein is the temptation to use the derogatory word "half breed". There is no such thing as a "half breed" among any of our beloved ethnicities, communities and races. We are a beautiful blend, a plural society rich is diversity. There is, however, unfortunately such a thing as a "half-breed" comment. If the cap fits...... 😉

Some of the comments were rude and childish. Dr. Careem is brilliant and eloquent and Sri Lanka should be proud to have this gentleman educating us all of our mixed heritage. I am a Professor of Electrical Engieering in California for 38 years, a Christian and a Tamil. A hindu convert. I did a DNA test and found out that not only do I have Tamil heritage but also Sinhala, Portuguese,Jewish, Islamic and British as well. In fact of the 360 , "eighth cousins" mentioned by name , 102 were of British origin! We are all of mixed heritage , being an island nation. I enjoy Dr. Careem's discussions on the minority communities of Sri Lanka. He is a treasure indeed. God bless you Sir, with prosperity and peace. Prof. John C. Balachandra BSc, MSc, Dr. Engineering, .....and anOld Thomian, as well...Esto Perpetua!

I concur. But Sri Lanka is a very difference place since the independence. You are more than an engineer. But the nationalist will never ever take your stand. I am one from the majority, who left for my sanity, long time ago. Even though I do not know a word of Tamil I grew up with Catholics, Burghers, Tamils and Muslims in Colombo. they opened a new world for me, *humanity* I feel sorry for the people I left behind. As you have read comments, they know how to twist words/terms for their own benefit. I still go to the same Jaffna Tamil Spice shop to buy my spices, no other, through out the war, yes I met few oddities during the war, but the owner shied them away. As an outsider to Tamil civilization if I say what I know I would sent to gallows calling me a separatist. Thank you sir for your wisdom!

Thank you for illustrating our European connection with a general historical point with the specifics of an Ceylonese historical life since 1505. As when humans began exploring the globe to trade ‘things’ just like Amazon today, The boundaries changed with ownership. This is a part of that historical trade winds that changed the shape and form of Ceylon by nautical history. The age of discovery ushered in by the Portuguese radically remade the world. Western ships were able to bring spices from Indonesia and gold from Peru back home. Fortunes were made on world trade, and the fortunes of nations shifted. Moors from Morocco who were trading in small ships were defeated by Portugese and were allowed to settle in east coast by King of Sri Lanka. Human institutions were modified to meet the changing conditions. Joint stock companies such as the Dutch East Indies Company, the British East India Company and the Hudson's Bay Company formed to take advantage of the opportunities. (Beira in Portugese means end of a river.).

I am a huge fan of Dr Careem, every week he amazes me with his incomparable knowledge, and this I learnt so much about the Dutch Burghers, It is sad that the "Sinhala Only Act" led to the disappearance of such a wonderful community. I remember there were so many Burghers when I was young, such a diverse, progressive country, Ceylon. Dr Careem, Thanks for enlightening the youngsters about a community that many have forgotten, as the title aptly suggests, the Burghers, have regrettably because of dumb politics, has become a "Lost and forgotten community". A great loss to our nation.

We should acknowledge and respect the fact that he is well read for his age, 28 years with such profound knowledge. Just because Dr Careem's mum is Burgher, we cannot jump to such conclusions, we should appreciate his hard work, intelligence and his personal interest. If I am to ask you about the history of Tamils, would you be able to answer, I highly doubt it. This requires dedication, and true passion hence, don't judge someone based on their lineage and upbringing. If Dr Careem was born into privilege, its good, why envy and be jealous of him.
